Perceptions Of The Characteristics Of Good, Bad And Ordinary Workers On The Job: The Influence Of Work Experience And Culture, Chong W. Kim, Andrew Sikula Sr., Harlan M. Smith Ii Mar 2006

Perceptions Of The Characteristics Of Good, Bad And Ordinary Workers On The Job: The Influence Of Work Experience And Culture, Chong W. Kim, Andrew Sikula Sr., Harlan M. Smith Ii

Management Faculty Research

As noted in Kim & Sikula (2003; 2004), there are three types of people in the workplace: people of Necessity, Common people, and Parasites. A person of Necessity is irreplaceable, crucial to the functioning of an organization. The Common person is a worker of average ability and talent who makes no significant difference to the success of an organization. Parasites are detrimental freeloaders, harmful to the functioning of an organization.

In the 2004 paper we analyzed the survey responses of 25 students in an MBA Organizational Behavior class, and of 13 working managers, all in the United States. In this …

Triple Bottom Line: A Business Metaphor For A Social Construct, Darrell Brown, Jesse F. Dillard, Scott Marshall Mar 2006

Triple Bottom Line: A Business Metaphor For A Social Construct, Darrell Brown, Jesse F. Dillard, Scott Marshall

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The triple bottom line is emerging as a popular conceptualization and reporting vehicle for articulating corporate social, environmental, and economic performance and is receiving significant attention in connection with its efficacy and sufficiency as a means for reporting the extent to which an organization meets its societal responsibilities. By preparing and disseminating triple bottom line statements, an organization conveys an image of concern and sensitivity to the three dimensions of societal responsibility: economic, environmental, and social. However, as currently conceived and operationalized, we question whether the triple bottom line reports actually provide information relevant to accessing corporate responsibility and enforcing …

Globalizing markets might not mean that markets have become similar. Although multinational companies tend to believe that all Asian markets are the same, a comparative analysis proves that consumers in Japan, Korea, and China differ in their brand orientations, attitudes toward domestic and foreign products, quality and price perceptions, and product feature preferences. To ensure success, companies must set aside narrow and risky assumptions, and tailor country-specific strategies to target these consumers.

Enhancing Long-Term Savings Culture In Nigeria Through National Savings Certificate., S. O. Alade Mar 2006

Enhancing Long-Term Savings Culture In Nigeria Through National Savings Certificate., S. O. Alade

Bullion

In Nigeria's economic history, the strides of the last five years, which have been internationally acclaimed, are unprecedented. The many reforms that have engendered the current success have largely included those in the financial sector, particularly, the positive policy shifts in the domestic money market as first steps towards a more robust and enduring face-lift for the sector. Part of the expectations are that the improved enabling environment from the reforms would continue to make more investment funds readily available, as well as attract droves of foreign direct investment. The challenges that remain include the need to deliver on the …

Is The Nigerian Curricula In Economics Relevant For The Nigerian Economy Of The 21st Century., J. A. Achilike

Bullion

The loopholes in Nigeria's educational system have created a death of capacity in the Nigerian economy. No nation can develop without qualitative education. The paper examines the relevance of the economics curricula in Nigeria's tertiary institutions in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. It highlights its problems and examines the efforts of National University Commission and Ministry of Education in meeting the challenges of economics education in Nigeria. Finally the study concludes that, the Nigerian Economics curricular is critically under developed and does not follow government economic policies, but if all the recommendations are adopted the Nigerian economics curricula …

Reciprocal Learning: An Application To Achieve Better Home Care Effectiveness, Margo Kraft Mar 2006

Reciprocal Learning: An Application To Achieve Better Home Care Effectiveness, Margo Kraft

Student Scholarship

The proposed research will investigate homecare giver practices that employ reciprocal learning in home healthcare settings. A conceptual framework will be presented in order to explore the effectiveness of healthcare practitioners who implement and utilize the reciprocal learning processes. These processes include theories of performance, learning, and relationships. The thesis is that these patients experience greater homecare results than those who do not receive reciprocal learning care. The researcher's conceptual framework will provide basis for a study to gain insight into the precursors of reciprocal learning practices, the nature of reciprocal learning relationships between caregivers and patients, and how these …

Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Regulation, Governance, And Performance, Larry W. Ettner Mar 2006

Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Regulation, Governance, And Performance, Larry W. Ettner

Student Scholarship

The results of governance research are mixed concerning the financial consequences of externally induced regulations. The debate hinges on the assumption that adoption of regulation is an exogenous factor in determining performance. Drawing on basic insights from institutional theory and innovation studies, I argue that response to regulation is in fact a mediator of the relationship between 'quality of governance' and financial performance. Focusing on the adoption of Sarbanes-Oxley (Sarbox) regulation by publicly traded companies, I hypothesize that governance quality is likely to affect financial success by influencing organizational responses to Sarbox. Using multiple year data from two large datasets, …

A Hybrid Scatter Search/Electromagnetism Meta-Heuristic For Project Scheduling, Dieter Debels, Bert De Reyck, Roel Leus, Mario Vanhoucke Mar 2006

A Hybrid Scatter Search/Electromagnetism Meta-Heuristic For Project Scheduling, Dieter Debels, Bert De Reyck, Roel Leus, Mario Vanhoucke

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the last few decades, several effective algorithms for solving the resource-constrained project scheduling problem have been proposed. However, the challenging nature of this problem, summarised in its strongly NP-hard status, restricts the effectiveness of exact optimisation to relatively small instances. In this paper, we present a new meta-heuristic for this problem, able to provide near-optimal heuristic solutions for relatively large instances. The procedure combines elements from scatter search, a generic population-based evolutionary search method, and from a recently introduced heuristic method for the optimisation of unconstrained continuous functions based on an analogy with electromagnetism theory. We present computational …

As The Pmi Turns: A Tool For The Supply Chain Manager, Matthew Lindsey, Robert Pavur Feb 2006

As The Pmi Turns: A Tool For The Supply Chain Manager, Matthew Lindsey, Robert Pavur

Faculty Publications

Supply chain managers use the PMI, an index of business activity and proxy for the general business cycle, to obtain valuable information important to strategic managerial planning. This research explores a methodology to provide managerial insight into the general business cycle by tracking and forecasting cycle turns in the PMI. A regression model is developed based on inherent cycles in the PMI between 12 and 65 months to forecast turning points for the index and anticipate changes in the business cycle, which is superior to the more commonly used Box-Jenkins forecasting technique. Strategic planning using this knowledge allows management to …

Organizational Renewal: Using Appreciative Inquiry To Build Network Capital, Thomas H. Carlson Feb 2006

Organizational Renewal: Using Appreciative Inquiry To Build Network Capital, Thomas H. Carlson

Student Scholarship

The intention of this research project is to explore linkages which exist, both in theory and in practice, between Appreciative Inquiry and social network theory. The approach employed here is to design a multidimensional organizational intervention using socialconstructionist concepts and approaches from appreciative inquiry, positive psychology and social network theory. The intention of this study is to explore the proposition that social innovation, as opposed to traditional problem solving techniques, can be an effective means of addressing challenges of team building, group learning, and organizational renewal and performance improvement. The intervention will be conducted with a newly formed unit of …

The Impact Of Enterprise Risk Management On The Internal Audit Function, Mark S. Beasley, Richard Clune, Dana Hermanson Feb 2006

The Impact Of Enterprise Risk Management On The Internal Audit Function, Mark S. Beasley, Richard Clune, Dana Hermanson

Faculty Articles

This exploratory study provides evidence about factors associated with the overall impact of enterprise risk management (ERM) on the internal audit function’s activities. Based on responses from 122 organizations in several countries, we find that ERM has the greatest impact on internal audit’s activities when (a) the organization’s ERM process is more completely in place, (b) the CFO and audit committee have called for greater internal audit activity related to ERM, (c) the chief audit executive’s (CAE) tenure is longer, (d) the organization is in the banking industry or is an educational institution, and (e) the internal audit function has …

The Confluence Of Intersubjectivity And Dialogue In Postmodern Organizational Workgroups, Daniel J. Shuster Jan 2006

The Confluence Of Intersubjectivity And Dialogue In Postmodern Organizational Workgroups, Daniel J. Shuster

College of Business and Technology - Graduate Student Scholarship

Nascent revival of dialogue is struggling to reach its potential within the postmodern organizational milieu. Concurrently, interpersonal intersubjectivity has steadily been de-pathologized, via reassessments of countertransference in the psychoanalytic sphere, allowing exploration of its utility in other domains of relational process. Effective use of dialogue is critical and foundational to developing meaningful and sustainable enterprise in the immediate future. Despite the risks, intentionally explored intersubjectivity is a powerful tool to enrich the container of dialogue. This paper qualitatively explores the literature on intersubjectivity and dialogue with an hermeneutic approach to discern the implications of their convergence for collaborative workgroups in …

Spirituality And Leadership Among College Freshmen, Barry Z. Posner Jan 2006

Spirituality And Leadership Among College Freshmen, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

Over a century ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson bragged to Henry Thoreau that "at Harvard they teach all branches of learning." Thoreau responded, "Yes, but they don ' t teach the roots" (Jacobs, 1991, p. 277). This sort of commentary continues to this day as a growing number of scholars and practitioners argue that the roots of effective leadership are grounded in the spiritual dimension of individual leaders (e.g., Conger, 1994; Marcie, 1997; Mitroff & Denton, 1999).

While hundreds of articles and books about spirituality and the workplace are now appearing, most are theory-based or anecdotal (Strack, 2001). Very little quantitative …
