Consumer Perceptions Of Rebranding: The Case Of Logo Changes, Saleh Abdulaziz Alshebil

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores the topic of rebranding, an important topic that has mostly been covered by practitioner journals and the business press. The focus of this research is on a specific type of rebranding - logo changes. The objective was to get a better understanding of consumer perceptions of logo changes by investigating what goes on in the consumer's mind when exposed to a brand logo change in terms of "coping" with this change. After an extensive qualitative investigation, a model was developed that focused on how exposure to a logo change puts the consumer into a coping process through …

Who We Are Drives What We Do: The Interplay Of Identity On Workplace Behaviors, Monika L. Hudson Jul 2007

Who We Are Drives What We Do: The Interplay Of Identity On Workplace Behaviors, Monika L. Hudson

Student Scholarship

This empirical study is designed to examine issues associated with who people believe they are and the effect that that has on how they behave. Specifically, it considers the separate and combined effect of three individually focused identity constructs-organizational, ethnic, and professional identity--on workplace behaviors perceived by the person or significant others as being either socially desirable or deviant. The behaviors are examined from the perspective of whether they are directed toward fellow employees or the work institution itself. The paper also considers whether two dimensions of organizational culture moderate the identity-influenced expressions of particular behaviors. Information was gathered from …

The article discusses how the individual performance affect the performance of the rest of the members of the team. The author cites from the perspective of a baseball player or any other team sport where the actions of one affect the actions of the other members. Each player is familiar with the rules, knows exactly what to do when it come to playing their position, and each person on the team is fully aware of the impact their performance will have on the other members of the team. Therefore, business leaders should hire individuals who are already familiar with their …

A Cultural Models Approach To Service Recovery, Glenn L. Christensen, Gaby Odekerken-Schröder, Torsten Ringberg Jul 2007

A Cultural Models Approach To Service Recovery, Glenn L. Christensen, Gaby Odekerken-Schröder, Torsten Ringberg

Faculty Publications

Service recovery research remains conflicted in its understanding of consumers’ recovery expectations and of why similar goods or service failures may lead to different recovery expectations. The authors argue that this conflict results from the assumption that consumer recovery expectations are monolithic and largely homogeneous, driven mainly by behavioral, relational, or contextual stimuli. Instead, recovery scenarios involving high-involvement (i.e., self-relevant) goods and service failures may activate closely held, identity-related cultural models that, though ultimately applied to regain balance (a foundational schema), differ according to their sociocultural heritage and create a range of unique consumer recovery preferences. The authors empirically identify …

The research is based on a 134 question survey completed by Air Force Acquisition Managers participating in the Air Force Fundamentals of Acquisition Management (AFFAM) course, and is designed to determine if knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in the instruction setting …

From Learned To Learning: Why Addiction To Learning Is Vital To Renewing Competitive Advantage, Radhashyam Giridharadas Jun 2007

From Learned To Learning: Why Addiction To Learning Is Vital To Renewing Competitive Advantage, Radhashyam Giridharadas

Student Scholarship

Business strategists seek to create a sustainable competitive advantage so that their organizations thrive. Yet in industry after industry the corporate graveyards are lined with companies that once led an industry and were subsequently ousted by smaller, nimbler competitors or new entrants. The long list of failed organizations underscores the challenge to the notion of sustainability. Clearly competitive advantage is subject to constant erosion, and companies seeking a sustainable competitive advantage may be chasing an illusory goal. To thrive, companies must learn to adapt their skills, resources and experience and transform them into renewable competitive advantages that are commensurate with …

Firm-Level Entrepreneurship And Performance: An Examination And Extension Of Relationships And Measurements Of The Entrepreneurial Orientation Construct, Justin Davis

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

Academic research in various areas of entrepreneurship has gained momentum over the past three decades. A primary topic of interest has been the characteristics of entrepreneurial organizations, often referred to as the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of the firm. The current study investigates past contributions in this stream of literature, seeking to provide definitive evidence of previously examined relationships. Further, the study analyzes several moderating influences and provides a new model for assessing a firm's EO. A meta-analytic statistical procedure is applied in the empirical portion of this dissertation. The base models of interest are the relationships between EO, innovativeness, proactiveness …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Organizations that implement competitive strategies and Internet business adoption in the market place can gain a competitive advantage and improved financial performance. The purposes of this explanatory and exploratory, mixed method study, were threefold: 1) to describe the relationship between competitive strategies and Internet business adoption, the relationship between competitive strategy and financial performance, and the relationship between Internet business adoption and financial performance; 2) to examine the effects of the different levels of Internet business adoption (prospecting, business integration and business transformation) and different strategic types (cost leadership and differentiation) on financial performance (profit margin, asset turnover, return on …

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah Jun 2007

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah

Student Scholarship

Global mindset and openness to change by upper echelon healthcare executives are positioned in this research proposal as prerequisites for competitive responses to a paradigmatic shift in the provision of healthcare worldwide. The proposal addresses a gap in the health care management literature evidenced by a deficit of empirical research pertaining to the relationships among global trade, health and health services and responds to a call for more, and more specific, cross-cultural studies that provide practical implications for international management. Motivated by prior research indicating the pivotal role of top manager's world views and attitudes on institutional responses to globalization, …

Information Systems (Is) Connectivity As A Moderator Of The Effects Of Is Support For Information Interpretation On Firm Performance: An Empirical Study, Michael J. Zhang Jun 2007

Information Systems (Is) Connectivity As A Moderator Of The Effects Of Is Support For Information Interpretation On Firm Performance: An Empirical Study, Michael J. Zhang

WCBT Faculty Publications

This study examined and tested the roles of information systems (IS) connectivity in influencing the performance impacts of IS support for information sharing and IS support for information interpretation. Using data collected from a survey of large U.S. firms and the Research Insight (Compustat) database, the results showed that when IS connectivity was high, IS support for information sharing was positively related to profitability whereas IS support for information interpretation was negatively associated with profitability. These findings suggest that a high level of IS connectivity is a two-end sword for firms which rely on both IS support for information sharing …

A Complexity Science Perspective On High Performance M&A Management Teams, Byron C. Clayton Jun 2007

A Complexity Science Perspective On High Performance M&A Management Teams, Byron C. Clayton

Student Scholarship

It has been well documented that over 50% of all mergers and acquisitions (M and A) fail. Despite a multitude of studies by M and A researchers, failure rates have not significantly changed for several decades. As such, the complex behavior of mergers, acquisitions, and their failure remains largely unexplained. Some researchers believe that the emerging field of complexity science may be the key to unlocking the secrets of M and A success. Complexity science, as applied to organizations, asserts that the simple interactions between managers can result in the complex behavior of the management team, specifically in its ability …

Estimating Of Logistic Model By Using Sequential Bayes Weights, Taha Hussein Ali, Tara Ahmed Hassan Chawsheen Jun 2007

Estimating Of Logistic Model By Using Sequential Bayes Weights, Taha Hussein Ali, Tara Ahmed Hassan Chawsheen

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This paper addresses the critical statistical challenge of heteroscedasticity—the non-constant variance of random error—within the framework of Multiple Logistic Regression. When the response variable is qualitative or binary, traditional estimation methods often struggle to maintain efficiency under varying error variances. To resolve this, the authors propose an innovative two-step sequential estimation procedure that integrates the Sequential Bayesian (SB) approach with Weighted Least Squares (WLS) techniques. Unlike classical methods that treat observations in a fixed batch, the sequential Bayesian mechanism allows for the dynamic updating of parameter estimates as observations are processed one by one, effectively incorporating new information into the …

Rationales For Collaboration; Implications For The Irish Road Freight Industry, Eoin Plant, Jim Mcgovern Jun 2007

Rationales For Collaboration; Implications For The Irish Road Freight Industry, Eoin Plant, Jim Mcgovern

Conference Papers

The European Union has made a commitment to promoting sustainable mobility through advanced transport logistics. One of the principal areas yet to be addressed is that of the potential barriers to advanced transport logistics and the attitudes of industry to this advancement. This paper addresses some of these concerns and argues that competition for high-value contracts can be very tough, especially where the contracts are from large organisations that often prefer to develop a relationship with only one transport service provider. The paper attempts to put the research into a theoretical framework of Resource-Advantage Theory. Empirical evidence is presented from …

Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney Jun 2007

Integrated Logistics And Supply Chain Management: The State Of Practice In Ireland, Austin Smyth, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were provided with aid to offset locational disadvantages in the run up to the Single European Market. Since then the Republic has emerged as the fastest growing member of the E.U. Success has not been underpinned by the transport system, suggesting that business has had to overcome locational disadvantages by strong performance elsewhere in the supply chain. The evidence indicates that there are Irish firms operating supply chain management techniques at a truly international standard. The problem is that there are so few in that category Meeting Ireland’s competitiveness challenge means closing the …

The Effects Of The Small Business Founder’S Need For Cognition On Early Stage Performance, John Leaptrott May 2007

The Effects Of The Small Business Founder’S Need For Cognition On Early Stage Performance, John Leaptrott

Management: Faculty Publications

This study assesses the relationship between the need for cognition and early stage organizational performance for a sample of small business owners who started new childcare ventures. Their need for cognition was assessed as a predictor of performance that was measured by sales growth. The data supported a significant positive relationship between need for cognition and performance as predicted. This study suggests that the cognitive characteristics of small business owners can influence the performance of their businesses.

Exploring The Factors That Promote Individual Team Member Knowledge Sharing In Information Technology Related Projects Using An Appreciative Inquiry Versus Problem Deficit Inquiry Analysis, Frank C. Braun

Student Scholarship

The management of organizational knowlegde has become an increasingly important discipline. Knowledge management can be defined as doing what is needed to get the most out of knowledge resources. The origin of a firm's capabilities is enabled through the knowledge in the minds of its employees and integrated business partners. Today organizations rely on key managers and decision makers who individually or collectively possess a profound understanding of specific domains that influence the decision-making process and activities of the organization. This knowledge along with contextual experience allows them to act more quickly, accurately and decisively enabling them to achieve objectives …

Strategic Thinking For R&D Amidst Global Economic Change: Retain And Invest, Outsource....Or Reinvent?, Beth Fitz Gibbon

Student Scholarship

This paper explores issues about firm sustainability in a time of rapid global change. As a strategist and product development practitioner, I need a better understanding of how those aspects of business intersect today. They are not frequently used in the same sentence; but I believe they come together in a firm’s research & development (R&D) process. Discovery reflects Peter Ducker’s, “what a company gets paid for” (1994: 96). That translates to the products and brand value bought by a firm’s customers. As an international practitioner, I also need to know more about the effects globalization has on how managers …

Key Considerations For Developing Electronic Medical Records Systems: Quantitative Research Study, Edward W. Wright May 2007

Key Considerations For Developing Electronic Medical Records Systems: Quantitative Research Study, Edward W. Wright

Student Scholarship

Despite promotion as a national objective, information technology remains relatively underutilized in US healthcare. Building upon an earlier qualitative study investigating the slow adoption of electronic medical records by family practice physicians, I conducted a survey of 368 family practice physician users and found that system ease of use was the only variable that had significant and substantive effects upon medical practice productivity, quality, and satisfaction. We discuss implications for EMR design and a national healthcare record network.

Location Advantages And Subsidiaries’ R&D Activities In Emerging Economies: Exploring The Effect Of Employee Mobility, Qin Yang, Crystal X. Jiang

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

With multinational corporations increasingly seeking subsidiaries’ specific advantages in foreign countries to develop their innovative capabilities, internationalization of research and development has been greatly emphasized. However, in emerging economies, managers are encountering the challenge of high employee mobility under the weak intellectual property protection regime. This article investigates subsidiaries’ employee mobility and proposes that it negatively moderates the relationship between location advantages and the level of subsidiaries’ R&D. This article extends R&D internationalization and enhances current understanding of subsidiaries’ R&D activities. Further, it provides managerial implications as to how managers can improve R&D outcome by mitigating obstacles in emerging economies.

Valuation Effects Of Business Process Outsourcing: Making The Case For Selective Governance, Chaojie Duan May 2007

Valuation Effects Of Business Process Outsourcing: Making The Case For Selective Governance, Chaojie Duan

All Dissertations

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has grown in incidence and importance over the past few years. However, beyond some expository studies, academic research on this phenomenon is sparse. Further, studies on IT outsourcing have primarily used a transaction cost economics (TCE) lens, and largely neglected other key theoretical explanations of the outsourcing decision and performance. In this dissertation, we examine how process level variables (process value chain position, relational governance, and process maturity) affect the excess stock return of a company. Drawing on the value chain framework, TCE, the resource based view, and institutional perspectives, we present a research model and …

Outcomes Of The Wetline Review. The Minister For Fisheries’ Decisions In Relation To The Future Management Of The West Coast And Gascoyne Commercial “Wetline” Fisheries, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia.

Fisheries Management Papers

This document details my final decisions on the new management arrangements for the West Coast and Gascoyne commercial ‘wetline’ fisheries. The decisions that are set out in this document will form an important part of the holistic management package required to ensure the long-term sustainability of our demersal scalefish resources in the West Coast and Gascoyne bioregions. The new Management Plans will provide the framework within which commercial scalefish catches can be explicitly managed to sustainable levels and will promote greater commercial certainty and confidence for those operators who gain access to the fishery.

A Communication-Centered Approach To Leadership: The Relationship Of Interpersonal Communication Competence To Transformational Leadership And Emotional Intelligence, Marilyn Macik-Frey May 2007

A Communication-Centered Approach To Leadership: The Relationship Of Interpersonal Communication Competence To Transformational Leadership And Emotional Intelligence, Marilyn Macik-Frey

Management Dissertations - Archive

Communication is frequently cited as a critical component of leadership. This study takes a significant theoretical departure from that view and embraces the realm of communication as a lens through which we understand leadership. It proposes that leadership is inherently communicative. Communication is viewed as more than a technique or component of leadership, but rather the essence of leadership (Barge, 1994; Hackman & Johnson, 1991; Vickrey, 1995). Communication is almost universally included in the study of leadership (Capowski, 1994; McLean & Weitzel, 1992; Vickrey, 1995), but is not typically viewed as a foundational element or as the central process from …

The limited number of available positions to job candidates has led to increased competitiveness among job seekers and the development of new and more efficient employment screening methods by human resources personnel. As a result, job candidates are likely to participate in a telephone interview at some point during the selection process. It is during these interviews that important perceptions about employment potential are made. A number of factors influence perceptions about the future potential of job candidates. In the absence of face-to-face interaction, decision makers may rely on how candidates sound over the telephone to make judgments about the …
