The Balanced Scorecard Framework-A Case Study Of Patient And Employee Satisfaction: What Happens When It Does Not Work As Planned?, Andrea Lorden, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh Apr 2008

The Balanced Scorecard Framework-A Case Study Of Patient And Employee Satisfaction: What Happens When It Does Not Work As Planned?, Andrea Lorden, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh

Management Faculty Research

Background: The successful utilization of the balanced scorecard (BSC) framework in health care has been demonstrated in the literature. Given these successes, a financially struggling hospital implemented a BSC framework intervention which attempted a culture change centered upon patient satisfaction which it hoped would translate to improved financial stability. Despite the evidence of BSC successes, the intervention, entitled Route 99, did not succeed in this hospital.

Purpose: This case study was conducted to identify learnable lessons and confounding factors associated with the successes and failures of Route 99. Metrics for patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction were examined as reflections of …

Perceived Random Leader Selection In Work Groups, Daniel Marsh Apr 2008

Perceived Random Leader Selection In Work Groups, Daniel Marsh

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Different methods of selecting a leader for work groups have been shown to have significant effects on the group's overall performance (Henningsen, et al., 2004). It has been suggested that systematic selection of leadership is detrimental to a group's performance and cohesiveness in certain cases (Haslam et al., 1998). This has been supported by many studies (Haslam et al., 1998; Henningsen et. al., 2004). In such cases it may be more beneficial to pick a leader in a random fashion instead of picking one due to leadership abilities. It was hypothesized that it is even more beneficial in these cases …

Institutional Distance And Foreign Ipo Performance: The Moderating Effects Of Governance And Organizational Capabilities, Robert Greg Bell Apr 2008

Institutional Distance And Foreign Ipo Performance: The Moderating Effects Of Governance And Organizational Capabilities, Robert Greg Bell

Management Dissertations - Archive

To date scholars have examined a wide range of factors which impact the ability of firms to raise optimum levels of equity capital in their domestic markets. However, little attention has been paid to the growing number of new listings of foreign firms in Western markets. When firms attempt to raise capital in foreign markets through an IPO, firm characteristics alone fail to provide a complete explanation for the success or failure of a new issue. This study investigates how the institutional profile and legal framework of a country can interact with certain firm-level governance and organizational capabilities to enable …

Shift Happens: Understanding Commitment Shifts In Mergers And Acquisitions, Byron C. Clayton Apr 2008

Shift Happens: Understanding Commitment Shifts In Mergers And Acquisitions, Byron C. Clayton

Student Scholarship

Existing research has failed to find answers to improve the continuing high failure rates of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The most frequently studied variables have offered no consistent explanations why some firms succeed and others fail. The unpredictability of M&A outcomes remains a mystery. Because mergers and acquisitions are most often associated with large-scale and sudden organizational change, we searched the broader field of organizational change for insight. The resulting conceptual model was used to explore the first-hand M&A experiences of managers, executive managers, employees, and change consultants. What emerged was evidence of significant shifts in commitment to change caused …

Duration Measures For Corporate Project Valuation, Tom Arnold, David S. North Apr 2008

Duration Measures For Corporate Project Valuation, Tom Arnold, David S. North

Finance Faculty Publications

Sensitivity analysis is a very common exercise performed with the forecasting of project cash flows. In this paper, a duration-type measure is generated that provides a single number for the assessment of project cash flows relative to changes in the discount rate (or adjusted for changes in a particular cash flow model parameter). The calculation is no more difficult than the duration measures that already exist for bonds. Yet, the calculation provides valuable insight that many times is lost when performing sensitivity analysis. Further, at a minimum, the measure provides a gauge for the consequences of mis-specifiying the discount rate …

The Impact Of The Internet On Airline Fares: Part Ii: Understanding The "Internet Price Effect", William G. Brunger Apr 2008

The Impact Of The Internet On Airline Fares: Part Ii: Understanding The "Internet Price Effect", William G. Brunger

Student Scholarship

Customers who use Internet-based online travel agencies (OTAs) to purchase “Clearly Leisure” trips (defined as trips that were booked at least 14-days in advance, where the customer stayed over the weekend) pay significantly less (more than 10 percent less in our sample) for similar itineraries in the same markets than those who purchase through traditional travel agencies. This difference persists even though the fares and inventory offered by the airline through each channel are identical because of contractual arrangements and airline marketing strategies. The purpose of this study is to examine this Internet Price Effect (IPE). Specifically, this study uses …

Cross-Ideology Management In Transition Economies: The Effect Of Incentives And Leadership Attributes On Management Practice In Vietnam, Christian Kamm

Student Scholarship

In recent years, globalization has promoted one of the most momentous changes in economic history, the demise of the communist-based command economies. One of these transition economies, Vietnam, has experienced vast and dramatic political and economic change since the country embarked on its policy to open its markets and create a market-driven economy. Specifically, the country has authorized-the operation of joint-ventures and privately-owned firms and has equitized (sold to investors) many previously state-owned firms. Senior management of these firms have had to respond to market incentives--both challenges and opportunities--in order to remain competitive and be successful. This paper proposes qualitative …

Role Engagement In Co-Operative Organizations: A Relational Framework For Understanding Board Commitment, Brian L. Newton Apr 2008

Role Engagement In Co-Operative Organizations: A Relational Framework For Understanding Board Commitment, Brian L. Newton

Student Scholarship

How board and chief executive officers (CEOs) engage to govern nonprofit organizations is not universally understood nor has such engagement been closely examined. The dialectic suggests that boards are either apathetic in governance (nannies of the CEO), or so operationally focused that they have lost sight of their mission. Likewise, CEOs have been accused of either running the board or as being enslaved to them. Much of the literature tries to separate the roles and responsibilities that the board and CEO have in governance. Other literature attempts to define what the board should do (versus what the CEO should do) …

The Impact Of Change Messages On The Commitment To A Change: An Analysis Of It Professionals In India And Malaysia, Humayun Rashid Apr 2008

The Impact Of Change Messages On The Commitment To A Change: An Analysis Of It Professionals In India And Malaysia, Humayun Rashid

Student Scholarship

Affective commitment of individuals is critical for the success of an organizational change initiative. In order to secure this desired form of commitment, managers spend a great deal of time and money implementing elaborate change management and communication strategies, often with little success. Three important types of change messages that are expected to drive commitment to change are:: (1) the organizational need for change (discrepancy), (2) the support of organizational leaders (principal support), and (3) the benefit of the change to the individual (personal valence). In this quantitative survey-based study conducted at a large global bank, we analyzed the perceptions …

Workplace Volunteerism: Bridging Demand Through Employee Liasions, Don E. Teague Apr 2008

Workplace Volunteerism: Bridging Demand Through Employee Liasions, Don E. Teague

Student Scholarship

A relationship between workplace volunteerism and the effectiveness of liaison employees is proposed that draws primarily upon four complementary sociological concepts: (1) the social identity theory (Tajfel, 1982); (2) a structural theory of action (Burt, 1982); (3) social capital (Adler & Kwon, 2002); and (4) weak-tie “bridges” (Granovetter, 1973). The complementary nature of each of the sociological theories is discussed to show how workplace volunteerism might be increased through the systematic application of their concepts. This paper proposes that workplace employees socially identify themselves with hierarchical workgroups at the workplace and utilize their strong and weak-tie relationships to influence their …

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson Apr 2008

Authentic Leadership: Do Leader's Values Impact Their Authenticity In The Eyes Of Their Followers? A Quantitative Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

Leadership theory defines authentic leaders as those holding high moral values, and posits that authentic leaders, through their integrity and altruism, inspire followers to emulate them by also developing their own values, integrity and caring. If the authentic leadership construct is valid, then followers must perceive their leaders' integrity and altruism before they will desire to emulate them, and these perceptions should be influenced by leaders' value content. This empirical study addresses that fundamental question: Do leaders' values impact their perceived authenticity--their integrity and altruism--in the eyes of their followers?

A Strategy For Managing The Recreational Catch Of Demersal Scalefish In The West Coast Bioregion., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia Mar 2008

A Strategy For Managing The Recreational Catch Of Demersal Scalefish In The West Coast Bioregion., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

The recreational management proposals that follow have been developed to deliver the required reduction in catches, while still allowing an enjoyable fishing experience for the majority of West Australians. If only a single management tool was used (e.g. a boat limit or closed season) the impact on recreational fishing would be huge. Therefore, the proposed management package has been carefully developed so that each management measure adds to the reduction required, while minimising the social and economic impacts as much as possible.

Working Alliances: The Impact Of Reciprocal Care Giving On The Working Alliance In Home Healthcare, Margo Kraft

Student Scholarship

Home health care organizations are met with many challenges including hiring the most effective practitioners, providing continual organizational support, and keeping well informed on factors that produce a successful working alliance. This quantitative study focuses on (1) the role of the practitioner in affecting the working alliance, and (2) the organizational support that creates a work culture conducive to a strong practitioner-patient working alliance.(3) identifying factors that influence the working alliance and also providing insight to the organization for better hiring practices. Our findings indicate that practitioner experience and organizational support appear to exhibit a primary role in the working …

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers Mar 2008

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers

Student Scholarship

This study examines social capital persistence following organizational disbanding. It utilizes data collected from a cohort of Arthur Andersen professionals employed in the same U.S. regional office of the firm prior to the 2001 Enron scandal. As predicted by extant research, results support the influence of bonding and utilization relationships. Interestingly, predicted support for bridging relationships was absent. The study also finds that individuals who were dispersed from their original cohort stood to gain more from their social capital, compared to their counterparts who were rehired by competitors with the same cohort after disbanding.

Predictors Of Management Effectiveness: Intelligence, Personality Or Emotional And Social Intelligence?, Raymond Massa Mar 2008

Predictors Of Management Effectiveness: Intelligence, Personality Or Emotional And Social Intelligence?, Raymond Massa

Student Scholarship

This study aims to contribute to the debate in differentiating emotional and social intelligence from intelligence (‘g’ or also referred to as IQ in normal parlance) and personality. A further aim and a consequence of this study is to offer a perspective on predictors of management effectiveness; in particular of Branch Managers in a financial sales environment. Emotional and social intelligence are described as a collection of competencies. Some scholars, however, argue that emotional and social intelligence competencies are merely manifestations of ‘g’ and personality. The question then is to what extent are emotional and social intelligence competencies independent of …

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman Mar 2008

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman

Student Scholarship

Organizations are challenged to adapt to changing conditions on a frequent basis. Leaders of these organizations communicate two critical ideas: clearly defining goals and generating the collective efficacy that those goals can be achieved. This study aims to explore the interrelationships between: (1) how communication develops path-goal clarity and collective efficacy, and (2) how clarity and efficacy interact to lead to the achievement of a performance objective. This paper captures results from a Fortune 100 company undergoing massive transformational change. The findings indicate that collective efficacy has a much stronger relationship to performance than path-goal clarity. For line workers, this …

Many current jobs and positions will be streamlined, restructured or removed, while some will certainly be created to handle the new requirements associated with ECSS. The structure of the Air Force is certain to change with the implementation of ECSS. The Air Force has used many maintenance organizational structures since its inception in 1947. The focus of this research is to analyze past organizational structures to define key factors that affect organizational change. A case study style methodology was …

Feasibility Of Jp-8 To Jet A Fuel Conversion At U. S. Military Facilities, Lance A. Vann Mar 2008

Feasibility Of Jp-8 To Jet A Fuel Conversion At U. S. Military Facilities, Lance A. Vann

Theses and Dissertations

In FY06, The Department of Defense (DoD) military grade jet fuel expenditures eclipsed $6.6 billion dollars. In a search for more cost effective options, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Comptroller recently expressed interest in the quantity of commercial Jet A fuel that the United States Transportation Command uses in lieu of military grade JP-8. In accordance with AFSO 21 and LEAN concepts, this research examines the technical feasibility and opportunity for cost avoidance of a conversion from JP-8 to Jet A at six Northwestern United States military installations. The technical feasibility analysis examines the chemical likeness of JP-8 …

Pre-Acquisition Characteristics Of The Acquirers, Rupendra Paliwal Mar 2008

Pre-Acquisition Characteristics Of The Acquirers, Rupendra Paliwal

WCBT Faculty Publications

Existing empirical literature has extensively analyzed post-acquisition performance of the acquirers to evaluate success of the takeover. The academic literature tends to agree that target shareholders benefit from takeovers; however takeovers benefits for acquiring firm’s shareholders have been questioned. A majority of empirical literature indicate acquisition announcements are associated with a decrease in acquiring shareholder’s wealth. While pre-acquisition characteristics of takeover targets have been extensively analyzed, empirical literature has not directly and comprehensively analyzed pre-acquisition financial and operating characteristics of the acquiring firms. In this paper, I examine pre-acquisition operating performance and governance characteristics of acquirers. Results suggest that bidders …

It Is Time The United States Air Force Changes The Way It Feeds Its Airmen. Six University's Perspectives On Outsourcing, Troy J. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force dining facility operations are stressed as a result of PBD 720 driven military force reductions, loss of personnel due to deployments, and the reduced availability of appropriated funds for mess attendant contracts, equipment replacement and facility maintenance and repair. “New, innovative methods of operating, funding and manning are needed in order to ensure our dining facilities are able to execute their mission of feeding and serving America’s Airmen” (Halverson, 2006). This research examines outsourcing’s potential as an innovative method to combat the problems facing dining facilities. The feeding models of six universities, which included self-operated, co-sourced, and fully …

The Effect Of Personality And Trust On Virtual Team Effectiveness, Eugene A. Pierce Mar 2008

The Effect Of Personality And Trust On Virtual Team Effectiveness, Eugene A. Pierce

Student Scholarship

Many organizations, such as the Department of Defense (DoD), are using virtual teams to meet the challenges of working globally. These teams are faced with unique challenges due to geographical distance. Literature suggests that trust is especially important in a virtual environment and that team leader personality is suggested to impact team member trust (Handy, l995; Cohen & Bailey, 1997). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between team leader personality, team member trust and perceived team effectiveness in virtual teamwork. Participants in the study included 873 virtual team members within a combined government (DoD) and commercial …
