Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

The article discusses research on Chinese multinational companies and the resource-performance relationship. The six hypotheses examined focus on the government's role in the corporations' acquisition of resources, the effect of government policy in China on the Chinese multinationals' performance, the influence of guanxi dynamism on social-capital and market-capital acquisitions and institutional embeddedness, the level of guanxi with Chinese government officials, and the relationship between a company's financial and technological performance. Research methods and absorptive capacity in emerging economies are mentioned.

A recent BusinessWeek article (28 July 2008: 17) reported some interesting data regarding the percent of people who say they cheat on their taxes. When a smiling devil cartoon character asked them, “How Bad are U?” over 50 percent of the survey respondents admitted to cheating on their taxes. However, only 25 percent said they cheated when the questions were asked on a website containing an official insignia with privacy assurances.

Faith In The Workplace, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at the Samaritan Interfaith Focus on Faith Breakfast (Cress Creek Country Club - Naperville, IL), Pollard addresses the question of faith in the workplace. In particular, he posits that servant leadership is the primary means by which one actualizes religious faith in everyday life.

Imsa360: Summer 2008, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Often when I speak to parents, students and educators, I share one of my core beliefs: there is no ceiling on human potential. Though perhaps a bit overstated, as I fully realize my limited singing ability elicits monumental groans and sends animals scurrying for cover, it is true that often when we think an individual has reached his or her “potential,” we are astounded by a new accomplishment. As I look back on my first year as IMSA’s second president, I am humbled and amazed by IMSA’s truly unlimited potential for advancing the human condition and living into our aspiration …

Optimizing Product Line Designs: Efficient Methods And Comparisons, Alexandre Belloni, Robert Freund, Matthew Selove, Duncan Simester Jul 2008

Optimizing Product Line Designs: Efficient Methods And Comparisons, Alexandre Belloni, Robert Freund, Matthew Selove, Duncan Simester

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We take advantage of recent advances in optimization methods and computer hardware to identify globally optimal solutions of product line design problems that are too large for complete enumeration. We then use this guarantee of global optimality to benchmark the performance of more practical heuristic methods. We use two sources of data: (1) a conjoint study previously conducted for a real product line design problem, and (2) simulated problems of various sizes. For both data sources, several of the heuristic methods consistently find optimal or near-optimal solutions, including simulated annealing, divide-and-conquer, product-swapping, and genetic algorithms.

Strategic Management Of Crises, Christine G. Springer Jul 2008

Strategic Management Of Crises, Christine G. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

The article discusses the duties and responsibilities of managers in assessing workplace threats. Managers should care when someone causes harm in the workplace. It is a duty of the managers to warn through a collaborative discussion about the advantages or drawbacks in a small group meeting. It is also an obligation of managers to act when an employee indicates that he or she is being harassed or threatened.

What Is Your Business? (Chicago), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech at the 2008 Chicago Executive Forum Breakfast (Naperville, IL), Pollard posits that Christian businesses (i.e., corporations in which, among other things, managers see themselves as servant leaders) should understand profit as a means for the development of human character.

Using Van Valens Procedure In Business Research To Assess Consistent Differences In Multidimensional Variability In Two Or More Groups, Mark L. Berenson, Kimberly Killmer Hollister Jun 2008

Using Van Valens Procedure In Business Research To Assess Consistent Differences In Multidimensional Variability In Two Or More Groups, Mark L. Berenson, Kimberly Killmer Hollister

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Much business research involves comparisons in two or more groups on many dimensions. This paper primarily focuses on demonstrating and providing guidance as to how researchers should approach a multivariate analysis in the comparison of sets of corresponding characteristics in two or more independent groups. In particular, this paper demonstrates the utility of a simple but not widely known procedure developed by Van Valen (1978) that should be employed to test for the significance of differences in overall variability in the sets of corresponding characteristics in two or more groups, a test that enjoys much statistical power in detecting significant …

Testing Of Lot Sizing Methods In The Mrp Ii System: A Case Study Of The Babel Plant, General Company For Battery Manufacturing, Sabah M. Al-Najjar, Azzam Abdulwahab Alsabbagh

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

MRP is a system intended for the batch manufacturing of discrete parts including assemblies and subassemblies that should be stocked to support future manufacturing needs. Due to the useful information provided by MRP it has evolved into a Manufacturing Resources Planning, MRP II, a system that ties the basic MRP system to the other functional areas of the company such as marketing, finance, purchasing, etc. The objective of this research, which was conducted at the State Company for Batteries Manufacturing, is to test the performance of some popular lot-sizing techniques used within MRP II framework. It is hypothesized that the …

A Robust Estimator For A Generalized Semiparametric Additive Model, Dhafer Hussein Rashid, Omar Abdulmohsin Ali Jun 2008

A Robust Estimator For A Generalized Semiparametric Additive Model, Dhafer Hussein Rashid, Omar Abdulmohsin Ali

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Generalized Additive Model has been considered as a multivariate smoother that appeared recently in Nonparametric Regression Analysis. Thus, this research is devoted to study the mixed situation, i.e. for the phenomena that changes its behaviour from linear ( with known functional form) represented in parametric part, to nonlinear (with unknown functional form: here, smoothing spline) represented in nonparametric part of the model. Furthermore, we propose robust semiparametric GAM estimator, which compared with two other existed techniques.

The Emergence Of The Concept Of Job Satisfaction In Organizational Behavior, Saad Ali Al-Anzi Jun 2008

The Emergence Of The Concept Of Job Satisfaction In Organizational Behavior, Saad Ali Al-Anzi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The prestigious Journal of Management History is highly commendable for its distinguished role in grounding management thought and accurately attributing theoretical concepts to their original authors. Volume 12, Issue 3 (2006) of this journal featured a significant historical review entitled "The emergence of job satisfaction in organizational behavior: A historical overview of the dawn of job attitudes research" by Thomas A. Wright, a Professor in the Department of Management at the University of Nevada. To begin, it must be emphasized that job satisfaction—a pivotal term in organizational behavior—originated within early 20th-century empirical studies focused on work attitudes, specifically through the …

Borgs In The Org? Organizational Decision Making And Technology, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft, Mark A. Fuller May 2008

Borgs In The Org? Organizational Decision Making And Technology, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft, Mark A. Fuller

Management & Entrepreneurship

Data warehousing and the development of the World Wide Web both augment information gathering (search) processes in individual decision making by increasing the availability of required information. Imagine, for example, that one wanted to buy new golf clubs. Thirty years ago, the cost of information gathering would likely have limited an individual's search process to geographically proximal vendors and the golf clubs they stocked. Today, a prospective purchaser can log onto the World Wide Web to find out what types of golf clubs are available anywhere; consult databases, chat rooms, and bulletin boards (e.g., epinions.com) to gather product information and …

Beyond “The Total Organization”: A New Adaptation Of A Great Exercise, Kathleen Kane May 2008

Beyond “The Total Organization”: A New Adaptation Of A Great Exercise, Kathleen Kane

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

“The Total Organization”, a Cohen, Fink, Gadon, and Willits’(1992) exercise, has great possibilities for inclusion in a variety of current courses covering a range of topics with a variety of outcomes. We have successfully adapted the exercise for our required MBA Leadership course. The participants must self-organize, choose leadership, determine roles, and develop the structure for an entrepreneurial (and should they choose, high tech) venture. With few instructions, they must struggle with the ambiguity of multiple organizational challenges including: innovation, creativity, team building and organizational design. We will demonstrate the exercise and give participants overheads and exercise instructions on CD …

Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner May 2008

Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

Too much of the time, business schools teach students about leadership, about leadership theories and concepts, about social psychological concepts as "applied" to leadership. Learning about leadership is not the same as learning to be a leader. We should be teaching our students to be leaders.

Portland Me: Affordable Housing V. Open Space, Patrick Wright, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer May 2008

Portland Me: Affordable Housing V. Open Space, Patrick Wright, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer

Planning

Amid an acknowledged “affordable housing crisis”, a first-time developer approaches the City to release part of a tax-acquired property, promising a smart-growth development that would provide sorely needed starter homes for working families. The case highlights the complications of balancing competing interests in Portland ME. It shows where rational planning fails in the presence of strong neighborhood opposition, a disjointed city staff structure, and the absence of political will among City Councilors. It highlights the need for champions within local government when a project evokes competing interests. It demonstrates the extent to which “words matter” to policy outcomes, and who …

The Pursuit Of Competitive Advantage And The Strategic Behavior Of Firms In Adopting Self-Service Technology, Timothy David Saur May 2008

The Pursuit Of Competitive Advantage And The Strategic Behavior Of Firms In Adopting Self-Service Technology, Timothy David Saur

Dissertations

In 2002 Zuboff and Maxim published their book titled The Support Economy. In the book the authors predict a new era of capitalism that holds great promise for companies and individuals who can design useful, usable, and desirable information systems, knowledge networks, and social software. Since the time of publication advances in technology have allowed the use of self-service products to expand into once unforeseen areas. Self-service technology is used by companies to lower cost, to increase market share, to develop new revenue streams, and to position their products as innovative. Yet the body of research surrounding the organizational strategy …
