It Professionals: Understanding What Impacts Their Desire To Engage In Work, Linda M. Pittenger
It Professionals: Understanding What Impacts Their Desire To Engage In Work, Linda M. Pittenger
Student Scholarship
There is a paucity of literature on Information Technology (IT) professionals that specifically emphasizes how either behavioral competencies and/or the organizational environment influence employee engagement. Employee engagement is described as a positive, work-related state of mind exhibited by high levels of energy, dedication, persistence, and happy absorption (Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma, & Bakker, 2002) manifested, when coupled with customer loyalty, in business growth and profitability (McEwen, 1998). Half of all U.S. workers are not fully engaged in their work and some are totally disengaged (Balogun & Johnson, 2004). When compared to the general employee population, lack of engagement is more of …

High Tech Tethers And Work-Family Conflict: A Conservation Of Resources Approach, Katherine M. Richardson, Cynthia A. Thompson
Publications and Research
This is one of the first studies to empirically examine the relationship between wireless communications technology and work interference with family, and results shed light on the motivating factors that influence individuals to continuously engage with mobile technologies, sometimes to their personal detriment. We draw from Conservation of Resources (COR) theory to examine the relationship between using mobile communications technologies during non-work time (e.g., evenings, weekends, vacation) and psychological variables related to work-family conflict and well being, and whether this relationship is mediated by perceptions of job control and detachment from work. We collected data from 139 full-time working adults …

The newly acquired organization was a publically held company and had its own existing financial processes and procedures. Financial planning and reporting are major company activities and finance and accounting professionals are expected to “get it right.” The purpose of this case study is to get students to think about the difficulties and challenges of revamping existing financial processes and procedures and alert them to areas where other financial professionals have encountered …
Potential Benefits Of Extended Season Sales Through Direct Markets, Irvin Yeager
Potential Benefits Of Extended Season Sales Through Direct Markets, Irvin Yeager
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examines fresh produce production sold through local farmers’ markets in the U.S. Rocky Mountain region to determine likelihood and benefits for extending production and marketing of fresh produce. Surveys were conducted with producers and farmers’ market managers to determine the likelihood of season extension, marketing realities, and potential products. Prices for eight commonly found produce items were collected at farmers’ markets in Utah and Colorado to model expected off-season pricing.
Surveys responses show producers have a short marketing season, limited acreage, and receive low revenues, but are experienced and have adopted some season extension techniques. High tunnels, one …

Manufacturing Mississippi's Workforce: An Assessment Of Employability Skills As Perceived By Faculty And Senior Students Of Four Year Manufacturing Related Degree Programs, Mamie Yvette Griffin
Dissertations
A worldwide concern exists that undergraduate programs are not producing graduates with the kind of lifelong learning and professional skills needed for workplace success. Numerous research studies indicate new employees lack needed employability skills such as teamwork, decision-making, and communication.
Similarly, recent national and state findings suggest that graduates of Mississippi‟s manufacturing-related degree programs may not be fully prepared to meet the needs of manufacturers in the state. Hence, this research proposes to determine the degree to which Mississippi‟s four-year manufacturing-related degree programs address employability.
To answer this question, the present study utilizes descriptive non-experimental research to assess the perception …

Examining Leader-Member Exchange As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Creativity Of Software Developers, Kyootai Lee, Terry Scandura, Youngkyun Kim, Kailash Joshi, Jooyeoun Lee
Ed G. Smith College of Business Faculty Works
This paper investigates how leader-member exchange (LMX) and emotional intelligence (EI) are associated with employees’ creativity in high-tech firms. We develop a model that considers LMX and EI as predictors of creativity with LMX as a boundary condition for the relationship between EI and creativity. Results reveal that LMX is a strong predictor of creativity. However, EI does not directly affect creativity. More interestingly, the interaction between EI and LMX negatively influences creativity such that EI is detrimental for creativity only when LMX is high. Thus, the role of LMX for employees’ creativity may be paradoxical. Further, the positive role …

Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Expatriates' degree of adjustment to living and working in a foreign country is well-accepted as an important outcome variable in expatriate management research. However, measures of degree of adjustment do not capture the breadth of strategies expatriates may use to achieve such adjustment, which may be critical for understanding whether expatriates have achieved a healthy and productive orientation to life abroad. Borrowing from research on immigrant populations, this study examines the construct of expatriate acculturation strategies, which characterize expatriates' mode of adjustment along two independent dimensions reflecting maintenance of one's home culture and engagement of the host culture, respectively. One …

- BLM informed UNLV that the type of operating plan that was identified in June, 2011 as the appropriate instrument for future operations, and which was to have been completed by May 2012, prior to beginning construction, would not work for BLM. BLM informed UNLV that they are now considering a concession contract as the appropriate BLM document for the future operating partner.
- BLM and UNLV visited the ranch for a day to examine the continuing deterioration of the ranch house from water, and to discuss how to address this on-going problem. The group reviewed damage owing to water coming into …

Professional Projects
The purpose of this ethnographic qualitative study was to explore the relationships between an employee’s engagement and the emotional and social intelligence of the employee’s manager. The participants were certain employees of a Midwest manufacturer who were chosen by purposeful, criterion sampling. Direct reports of the chosen and consenting leaders were asked to complete a survey designed to measure the employee’s assessment of the social and emotional intelligence of their leaders. A total of 42 reports and 21 managers participated in this portion of the study. The emotional intelligence survey results were coded, reviewed and compared with the engagement survey …
What Determines Public Pension Investment Risk-Taking Policy, Nancy Mohan, Ting Zhang
What Determines Public Pension Investment Risk-Taking Policy, Nancy Mohan, Ting Zhang
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
State public pension plans, mostly defined benefit plans, cover pension benefits for 12.8 million active public employees and 5.9 million retirees and other annuitants. However, by the end of 2009, public pension plans had accumulated a total funding deficit of $697 billion (measured by the difference between actuarial pension assets and liabilities). On average, public pension funds cover 75 percent of their liabilities, but individual state results vary greatly.
The 2008 stock market crash strongly affected pension asset value in that equity allocation on average accounted for 56 percent of invested assets. The average 2009 pension asset beta of 0.63 …

Honors Projects in Management
Healthcare quality and costs are a growing problem in the United States. Healthcare organizations are facing increasing costs combined with declining quality (Schoenbaum). This unsustainable trend is putting a great burden on the health care system as a whole. The improvement of quality within the healthcare system would increase the value of the care (Schoenbaum).Improving healthcare quality, and thereby lowering the costs, is critical for the sustainability of healthcare organizations.
There are many different ways that organizations can use quality to reduce costs and increase the quality of service to their patients. There are also various ways an organization can …
