Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele Dec 1976

Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele

Dissertations and Theses

Directing texts are inadequate in their various approaches to teaching the concepts of stage-composition. The goal of this thesis was to show that, for an approach to stage composition to be judged adequate, it must systematically provide the student of directing with a firm grounding in design and compositional principles as they relate to the total stage picture.

Nineteen texts were studied and their presentations of compositional principles were analyzed. Eight texts are included in an in-depth structural analysis. The texts analyzed are Fundamentals of Play Directing by Alexander Dean, The Art of Play Production by John Dolman, Play Direction …

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson Jan 1950

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many events of the gold rush have been adequately narrated in numerous books and articles. The succeeding pages in this thesis will recall, historically by topic, important incidents of one phase of that period never before treated as a separate study that phase is the theatre of the Mother Lode region.

The argonauts of the Mother Lode wanted to be entertained and could pay for it. Many preferred the saloon and gamboling hall, but the theatre did not languish because of this, and in fact, developed in some instances directly out of the saloons and fandango halls.

It was the …

The Development Of Stage Lighting And Its Application To A Problem In Scenic Design Entailing The Use Of A Unit Set For The Staging Of Six Plays Comprising A Cross Section Of English Drama, Anthony Reid Jan 1946

The Development Of Stage Lighting And Its Application To A Problem In Scenic Design Entailing The Use Of A Unit Set For The Staging Of Six Plays Comprising A Cross Section Of English Drama, Anthony Reid

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Eliminating any consideration of setting, the story of the evolution of lighting is an absorbing commentary upon the history of the theatre and necessary to the full integration of its use as an instrument in the modern theatre. An understanding of the history of the development of stage lighting is as necessary a foundation to the creative and imaginative use of light in the theatre as the foundation of a building is necessary to the support of a tower. History probides the signpost showing the directions to be taken in experimentation and a standard for evaluation of such experimentation. The …

A History Of The Productions Of The Little Theatre, 1933-1935, Demarcus Brown Jan 1935

A History Of The Productions Of The Little Theatre, 1933-1935, Demarcus Brown

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The growth of interest in drama and the realization of the educational value of dramatics has developed a new place for the college theatre. Pacific Little Theatre was organized eleven years ago to fulfill a definite need and has since grown slowly and steadily into a most active producing unit, serving both school and community. Indeed Pacific Little Theatre can be taken as an excellent specific example of the contribution which can be made to campus and community life by the college aside from its main function as fundamental ground for students in the theatre arts.
