Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll May 2012

Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Copyright law grants authors certain rights of creative control over their works. This Article argues that these rights of creative control are too strong when applied to the performing arts because they fail to take account of the mutual dependence between writers and performers to fully realize the work in performance. This failure is particularly problematic in cases in which the author of a source work, such as a play or a choreographic work, imposes content-based restrictions on how a third party may render the work in performance. This Article then explores how Congress might craft a statutory license to …

"Spectacular Opacities": The Hyers Sisters' Performances Of Respectability And Resistance, Jocelyn Buckner Jan 2012

"Spectacular Opacities": The Hyers Sisters' Performances Of Respectability And Resistance, Jocelyn Buckner

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

This essay analyzes the Hyers Sisters, a Reconstruction-era African American sister act, and their radical efforts to transcend social limits of gender, class, and race in their early concert careers and three major productions, Out of Bondage and Peculiar Sam, or The Underground Railroad, two slavery-to-freedom epics, and Urlina, the African Princess, the first known African American play set in Africa. At a time when serious, realistic roles and romantic plotlines featuring black actors were nearly nonexistent due to the country’s appetite for stereotypical caricatures, the Hyers Sisters used gender passing to perform opposite one another as heterosexual lovers in …

When You Got It, Bump It: A Lost Showgirl’S Cabaret, Mary Claire King May 2011

When You Got It, Bump It: A Lost Showgirl’S Cabaret, Mary Claire King

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For my Capstone project, I developed an original cabaret entitled “When You Got It, Bump It: A Lost Showgirl’s Cabaret.” The story follows Mazeppa, the lost showgirl, as she travels the vaudeville “circuit” in an attempt to regain her fame. I portray this leading character, while two other women portray her friends and co-stars. All three characters are based on perhaps some of the most famous showgirls on Broadway, Mazeppa, Tessie Tura and Electra of the 1959 musical, Gypsy.

I performed the cabaret twice, on the evenings of April 2nd and 3rd, at the First Unitarian …

Healthy Performance Practice For Male Barbershop Singers, Jacob K. Bartlett May 2011

Healthy Performance Practice For Male Barbershop Singers, Jacob K. Bartlett

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Barbershop singing is a hobby enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of men and women across the world. We attend conventions, shows, competitions, and educational outreach programs each year at our own expense to preserve a style we truly love.

Most singers of the style are amateur musicians. This constitutes somewhat of a challenge when we consider the need for healthy singing in light of certain assumptions about the vocal technique required of the barbershop style. Most do their best to make a healthy sound but end up doing more harm than good to their own voices after a lengthy rehearsal. …

Silence: Exploring Salvatore Sciarrino’S Style Through L’Opera Per Flauto, Megan R. Lanz Dec 2010

Silence: Exploring Salvatore Sciarrino’S Style Through L’Opera Per Flauto, Megan R. Lanz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to examine the works in Salvatore Sciarrino’s (b. 1947) collection L’opera per flauto written for solo flute and to examine Sciarrino’s compositional style, focusing on his characteristic markings, creative sonorities, and other pertinent facts about pieces in the collection. The first chapter in this paper discusses the value of silence in music and how Sciarrino provides the illusion of perceived silence. Chapter Two discusses elements of Sciarrino’s compositional style and the presence of complex notation. The final chapter provides flutists with a technical guide to the seven pieces in his L’opera per flauto collection. …

Real Americans Mean Much More: Race, Ethnicity, And Authenticity In Belasco's Girl Of The Golden West And Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2010

Real Americans Mean Much More: Race, Ethnicity, And Authenticity In Belasco's Girl Of The Golden West And Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Conceived by Belasco and filtered through Puccini, the characters in La fanciulla del West exhibit a diversity that is unusual even for an opera with an exotic setting: Mexicans, Australians, and European-Americans of various backgrounds reinvent themselves in a new land of seemingly endless possibilities, while the area's native inhabitants struggle to survive. California's multi-cultural population as understood by Belasco, by his Broadway audience, and by Puccini and his operatic audience create compound layers of difference that both focus and obscure the racial and ethnic hierarchies that played out in the 1840s and 50s. This article will begin to untangle …

Crossing Borders In Leonard Bernstein’S Mass, Theresa Hubbard May 2009

Crossing Borders In Leonard Bernstein’S Mass, Theresa Hubbard

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

On September 8, 1971, Mass by Leonard Bernstein premiered at the inauguration performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Subtitled “A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers,” Mass possess examples of several different types of music, making the piece very eclectic in nature. It is a huge work which requires close to 200 performers who are well-versed in several musical genres.

Bernstein composed Mass using the form of the Roman Catholic Mass celebration, as many composers have done in the past. Bernstein was a bit more daring, however, and instead of composing music …

Ralph Vaughan William's The Pilgrim's Progress: Problems And Solutions For Future Performances, Richard Brandon Brunson May 2009

Ralph Vaughan William's The Pilgrim's Progress: Problems And Solutions For Future Performances, Richard Brandon Brunson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The 1951 premier of The Pilgrim's Progress by Ralph Vaughan Williams was not a success. Two years later, Vaughan Williams told Michael Kennedy that "the Pilgrim is dead."1 A handful of attempts have been made to revive the work in the last few years, and a second recording of the opera by Richard Hickox has revived some interest.

Despite this progress, three big problematic areas (outlined by contemporary critics and Vaughan Williams) continue to stand in the way of staging this work. These three areas are the Apollyon scene, the homogeneity of the tempi, and the lack of dramatic elements …

Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2008

Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Some of the mast extensive and significant textual changes in all of Puccini's operas appear in the published revisions of Madama Butterfly. Many of these verbal modifications, together with cuts and additions to the score, influence the dramatic depiction of the protagonists. Changes to Pinkerton's character soften an insensitive and even offensive figure who, after all, needs to be convincing as the object of Butterfly's love. For Cio-Cio-San, three rounds of revision mean a gradual loss of complexity on any fronts, bringing an exotic, mercurial heroine closer to operatic convention. The Butterfly that we know today has a more …

Toscanini And The Myth Of Textual Fidelity, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2003

Toscanini And The Myth Of Textual Fidelity, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Changes in the public perception of performing artists make for fascinating study. There once was a time when the Three Tenors were considered mere mortals. And there was a time when a conductor, Arturo Toscanini, was considered the living embodiment of the composers whose music he performed. Largely through the efforts of the press and the National Broadcasting Company, Toscanini came to be known as the only musician with the integrity and modesty to perform a composition exactly as it was notated in the musical score. Thanks to the existence of recorded performances, as well as the reminiscences of some …

The Works Of Giuseppe Verdi: A Consideration Of Its Impact, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2002

The Works Of Giuseppe Verdi: A Consideration Of Its Impact, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The rationale for preparing a critical edition of Verdi's works is by now well known. The unavailability of printed orchestral scores for some operas, disagreements among performing materials for others, and a proliferation of new scholarship illuminating the complex Verdian source situation all point to the need for a scholarly edition of the complete works of this extremely popular composer. In 1983 the University of Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi began jointly producing scores and other performing materials in a series entitled «The Works of Giuseppe Verdi» («WGV»). Rigoletto was the first volume to appear, followed by Ernani, Nabucco, …

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2001

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This essay examines some of the issues involved in administering performing arts manuscript collections. After briefly discussing the evolving notion of privacy in both its legal and moral senses, it will turn to the relationships and interlocking responsibilities of the four groups concerned with access to manuscript collections: donors, custodians, users, and "third-party" contributors. Finally, the results of a survey of performing arts repositories will reveal the variety of ways in which these responsibilities are addressed. It will be demonstrated that despite the attention paid to issues of access by professional organizations, agreements in theory, much less in practice, have …

A Fragment From Act Ii Of Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 1999

A Fragment From Act Ii Of Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This manuscript transmits ten measures from the so-called "Sextet" in the opera's second act, corresponding to pages 207 (measure 2) through 210 (measure 1) of the current published orchestral score. The passage forms part of the middle section of a tripartite structure that begins and ends with the renowned "Musetta's Waltz" ("Quando m'en vo"). At this point in the plot, the inhabitants of Paris's Latin Quarter, gathering to celebrate Christmas Eve at the Cafe Momus, witness the spectacle of Musetta's successful attempt to win back her lover. The section as a whole presented a problem for Puccini's librettists, who had …

Analysis, Interpretation And Performance Of The Concerto For Violin And Orchestra By Samuel Barber, Elizabeth Ruth Flood Mar 1997

Analysis, Interpretation And Performance Of The Concerto For Violin And Orchestra By Samuel Barber, Elizabeth Ruth Flood

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In the twentieth century there has been much diversity and multiplicity in the musical world. Tonal and rhythmic realms have been redefined by many composers, some who were concerned with preserving beauty in their aural landscapes and some who deemed it an inessential part of the musical experience. In this compositional sphere, Samuel Barber was a composer who continued the Romantic tradition handed down to him, while adding to it aspects of contemporary musical culture. In all of his writing, Barber's highest musical aim was expression of emotion, and the variety of compositional techniques he employed were used to serve …

The Violin Director And Verdi's Middle-Period Operas, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 1997

The Violin Director And Verdi's Middle-Period Operas, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The operas of Verdi provide an excellent laboratory for studying the transition from violin director to conductor. By the mid 1860s, some two dozen of his works had been presented hundreds of times throughout Italy. Information on many of these performances is currently available in periodicals, theater histories, and other chronicles. In addition, the American Institute for Verdi Studies (AIVS) has microfilmed over sixty documents that offer a unique perspective on the role of the violin directors, namely, the parts from which they performed. These parts are enlightening both for what they contain and what they omit, suggesting in greater …

Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell May 1992

Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates American composer George Crumb's employment of musical quotation in his works from 1962 to 1985. The thesis also contains a brief biography of the composer and overviews of his major compositional style traits and his musical influences. Because Crumb often quotes from the same composers and musics that have influenced his musical style, the subject musical influences is related to the main thesis, musical quotation. Also, Crumb sometimes borrows a specific gesture from another composer's work without actually quoting it--that is making significant note and/or rhythm alterations; this type of borrowing is described by Crumb as a …
