In this paper, I examine definitions of and relationships between violence, oppression, peace, liberation, and embodiment in the context of critical pedagogy in order to construct a theory of critical embodied praxis for social justice and peace educators. Considering the body to be a tangible vessel through which narratives and mechanisms of violence are expressed and maintained, I explore the potential of the body to be a vessel through which liberatory narratives may be generated and shared. Drawing from dance historians and movement theorists, this paper analyzes the role movement plays in the construction and performance of gender. By deconstructing perceived stereotypes about masculinity, the argument breaks down the gender binary and its relation to movement. With research rooted in the works of Bill T. Jones and Joe Goode, the paper also looks at the intersection between masculinity and sexuality. Movement as a performance of gender is rooted in cultural and emotional contexts, heavily influenced by traditional gender roles and the persistence of homophobia. Performed February 22-24 and March 1-3, 2018 at the Mitchell Theatre.

Called by Time the “theater event of the year,” Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses brings Ovid’s tales to stunning visual life. Set in and around a large pool of water, Metamorphoses juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image to reflect the variety and persistence of narrative in the face of inevitable change. Nominated for three 2002 Tony Awards, including “Best Play,” Metamorphoses earned Zimmerman a Tony for “Best Direction of a Play.”

Publications and Research

In the neighborhood of HollyWatts in Los Angeles, dance allows a shift from existing as bodies presented as sites of threat and extinction to sources of spiritual empowerment. Clowning and Krump dancers—their subjectivity and their dancing bodies—negotiate survival from trauma and socioeconomic marginalization. I argue that the dancers’ performances act as embodied narratives of “re-membering in the flesh.” The performance acts as a spiritual retrieval and re-integration of traumatic memories and afflictions into memory through the body. Choreography and quotes from dancers support the claim that Krump and Clowning is “re-membering in the flesh” that enacts self-worth, self-defined sexuality, and …

Staging works from our rich concert dance heritage relies on determining what the “real” dance is, particularly when the work is no longer currently performed. Because choreographers frequently alter their choreography, creating multiple versions of a dance, identification of a definitive version can be a complex process. The chapter examines the myriad meanings of dance competitions through the lens of Indian dance reality shows. It discusses reality shows such as Boogie Woogie, Dance India Dance, Naach Dhum Machale, and the production of new hybrid dances and remixes. The symbiotic relationship between Bollywood dance, reality shows, and the television industry creates the new aspirational aesthetics of “remix.” By combining ethnographic research and textual analysis of song-and-dance sequences of Bollywood films and reality shows, the chapter explores the transformation of the mythopoetic bhakti rasa of classical dances into the remix of Bollywood dances. As a dance practitioner and self-identified Jew, I am deeply committed to social action through performance. Over the course of the past year, I explored the capacity of contemporary dance practices to support Jews in reflecting on and conceptualizing their Jewish experience. Through literary and creative research, the designing and facilitating of movement workshops in mid-Maine Jewish communities, and the creation of an evening-length performance piece titled, Shelanu (Ours), I discovered the numerous ways in which these two aspects of my identity could enrich one another. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง “เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ Bangkok Theater Festival นี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา ความเป็นมาและรูปแบบการแสดงของงานเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาข้อมูลจาก เอกสาร สัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์และเข้าร่วมเป็นจิตอาสาในงานเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ ในปีพ.ศ. 2562 ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาพบว่า เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพเป็นงานชุมนุมการแสดง โดยคณะละครและกลุ่มการแสดงต่าง ๆ ของคนรุ่นใหม่ในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร เกิดจากการรวมตัวของกลุ่มละครได้ 10 กลุ่ม เพื่อสร้างเครือข่ายทำให้เกิดเป็น เครือข่ายละครกรุงเทพ รวมถึงการเชื่อมโยงกลุ่มบุคคลต่าง ๆ กลุ่มคณะละคร กลุ่มศิลปินอิสระ กลุ่มอาจารย์ด้านการแสดงหลากหลายแขนง และรวมถึงกลุ่มนิสิต นักศึกษา จัดขึ้นปีละ 1 ครั้ง เริ่มจากปีพ.ศ. 2545 จนถึงปัจจุบัน รวมเป็น 18 ปี ความโดดเด่นของเทศกาลละครคือ การจัดงานเป็นประจำปีทุกปี ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน มีความต่อเนื่องเป็นประจำ จึงทำให้เห็นถึงความสม่ำเสมอของการจัดงานเทศกาล การทำงานของงานเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ ทำให้เกิดพื้นที่สร้างสรรค์และพื้นที่ในการสร้างงานผ่านศิลปะการละคร รวมไปถึงศิลปะการแสดงในหลากหลายแขนง เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพเป็นเหมือนพื้นที่ให้กับกลุ่มคนทำละคร ได้มีพื้นที่ในการสร้างงานละคร และการแสดงต่าง ๆ เนื่องจากเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพเปิดรับกลุ่มงานแสดงทุกประเภท ไม่ปิดกั้น จึงทำให้งานแต่ละชิ้นงานของศิลปินมีความหลากหลาย ผลิตงานละครและงานศิลปะให้มีเอกลักษณ์ที่ชัดเจนเพื่อสร้างความโดดเด่นและความแตกต่าง จึงส่งผลให้เทศกาลละครกรุงเทพเป็นที่น่าสนใจในกลุ่มคนทำละคร และกลุ่มละครที่ต้องการอยากจะทดลองทำงานได้เข้ามาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานผ่านงานเทศกาลละครกรุงเทพ เอกลักษณ์เฉพาะของเทศกาลคือมีรูปแบบที่เป็นของตนเอง เป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งที่มีตัวเลือกของงานละครและงานสร้างสรรค์ต่าง ๆ ให้ผู้ชมได้เลือกได้ด้วยตนเอง มีการขยายพื้นที่ จัดแสดงตามร้านอาหาร โรงละครในกรุงเทพมหานคร ทำให้เกิดการขยายฐานคนดูให้เพิ่มมากขึ้น โดยต้องการให้เทศกาลละคร สร้างตัวตนและงานละครให้มีการเติบโตกว้างขวาง รวมถึงเป็นกิจกรรมที่สำคัญที่ทำให้งานละครเข้ากับกลุ่มละครและผู้ชม พัฒนาศักยภาพของศิลปินการละครร่วมสมัยให้เกิดความยั่งยืนขยายพื้นที่การแสดงด้านศิลปะการละครร่วมสมัย ให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งทั่วกรุงเทพมหานคร

This paper delves into the life and career of Jean-Étienne Despréaux (1748-1820), as read through a catalogue of his library. The catalogue, the earliest known detailed record of books owned by a dancing master, was printed after Despréaux’s death to announce the sale of his library in a 3-day auction. It reveals Despréaux’s wide-ranging reading interests and his desire to build a comprehensive collection of books about dance—a collection that would anticipate the modern notion of a canon of historical dance monuments. Importance: Social support is a major determinant of health for geriatric oncology patients. Nevertheless, no DMT program utilizes community building as an explicit focus of intervention.

Objective: To design a DMT that fosters a therapeutic approach which relies as much on the interpersonal relationships as on the intrapersonal journey. Design, setting, participants: 12 weeks observational trial of participants, from TJUH geriatric oncology patient population, as they progressed through two series of social dance workshops. This research project titled Dancing Elements explores choreographic conversations between the body and natural elements, specifically water on film. I question how natural elements when viewed in relation to the dancing body, can begin to be seen as a dancing entity. Black Star, Other Fetishized: Carlos Acosta, Ballet’S New Cosmopolitanism, And Desire In The Age Of Institutional Diversity, Lester Tomé

Focusing on Carlos Acosta, the Cuban performer who became the first black principal dancer of London’s Royal Ballet, this chapter proposes that a new cosmopolitanism characterizes contemporary ballet. Such cosmopolitanism, informed by the institutionalization of diversity, is achieved through the presence of Latin American and Asian dancers in European and North American companies. Inclusion of the subaltern lends these institutions an image of multiculturalism and globality that increases their social capital. Yet, ballet’s new cosmopolitanism impels subaltern dancers to negotiate the fraught politics of moving from the periphery to the center, where they find themselves both valued and devalued for …

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องการแสดงในขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาและรูปแบบการแสดงในขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสาร งานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง การสัมภาษณ์กลุ่มตัวอย่าง และการสังเกตการณ์แบบไม่มีส่วนร่วม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแสดงในขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ได้มีการพัฒนามาอย่างต่อเนื่อง ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2444–2562 เป็นระยะเวลา 118 ปี โดยเริ่มจากการรวมตัวของชาวบ้านแห่นำเทียนพรรษาประกอบการร้องรำทำเพลงไปถวายพระสงฆ์ยังวัดพัฒนามาเป็นการแสดงหมู่เป็นชุด ๆ ในลักษณะขบวนเคลื่อนไปตามเส้นทางบนถนน โดยแบ่งการแสดงออกเป็น 2 ช่วง คือ 1. การแสดงในขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาภาคกลางวัน จัดแสดงในวันเข้าพรรษา สามารถจำแนกรูปแบบการแสดงออกเป็น 3 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ การแสดงพื้นบ้านในลักษณะไม่ตายตัว การแสดงพื้นเมืองอีสาน และการแสดงร่วมสมัย 2. การแสดงในขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาประกอบแสงเสียงภาคกลางคืน มีที่มาจากการนำรูปแบบขบวนแห่เทียนพรรษาภาคกลางวันมาผสมกับการแสดงแสงเสียง จัดแสดงทั้งหมด 2 วัน คือ คืนวันอาสาฬหบูชา และคืนวันเข้าพรรษา เป็นการแสดงรูปแบบพื้นเมืองอีสานประกอบการแสดงเรื่องราว เนื้อหาของการแสดงจะสัมพันธ์กับหัวข้อหลักของการแสดงที่ถูกกำหนดขึ้น การแสดงทั้ง 2 ช่วงนี้จะสะท้อนถึงประเพณี พิธีกรรม ความเชื่อ ศิลปวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่น วิถีการดำรงชีวิต การละเล่น โบราณวัตถุ และการเทิดพระเกียรติ ผ่านองค์ประกอบของการแสดง งานวิจัยฉบับนี้นอกจากจะเป็นการเผยแพร่ศิลปวัฒนธรรมเชิงพุทธศิลป์อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีแล้ว ยังเป็นประโยชน์ทางด้านการสร้างสรรค์การแสดง และด้านการศึกษาทั้งในสถาบันการศึกษาและผู้ที่ศึกษาเชิงวิชาชีพในประเทศไทยต่อไป

This article surveys how contemporary Broadway musicals cast fat women and focuses on Hairspray. The use of fat suits and contractual weight clauses figure into the discussion of fat stigma and casting practices. Seemingly body-positive musicals both celebrate and undermine the identities staged in them.

Research has shown that more than 45% of American companies are opting to integrate personality tests in their recruitment processes. Given this surge in personality testing, this thesis examines whether personality testing is a valid predictor of job-fit and performance in the context of personnel selection. A large proportion of this paper is focused upon the Big-Five factor model, its limitations, and derivative tests of the model. The impact of technology upon personality testing is also discussed as an emerging field.
