Leading And Following: Exploring The Impact Of Mentorship On Collegiate Dancers, Peyton Winsett

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in student development across various disciplines, yet its specific impact on dancers within collegiate programs remains underexplored. This literature review and small pilot study investigates the hypothesis that mentorship in university dance programs positively influences students’ artistic identity, academic achievement, and career readiness. Drawing from six empirical studies, including research in arts education, peer mentorship, and emotional development, the paper analyzes how mentorship structures shape dancers’ holistic growth. While mentorship is generally associated with beneficial outcomes, findings also reveal critical nuances regarding mentorship quality, accessibility, and the risks of informal or biased systems. Through a …

Wearable technology offers new opportunities for analyzing complex movements like dance, where precision, coordination, and feedback are key. In this demo, we present DanZens, a novel toolkit for real-time motion analysis in dance, leveraging wearable sensors to provide accessible and actionable feedback. Combining DanceTag to capture and annotate movements with DanceVis to visualize performance differences, DanZens uses Sony Mocopi sensors to analyze motion and generate intuitive heat maps through Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). This system enables precise, cost-effective comparisons between two people doing dance-related movements, offering personalized feedback and eliminating the need for expensive biomechanical labs. Designed to advance pervasive …

Is Dance A Universal Language? - Global Contemporary Dance, Mandy Fang
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
From its origins, a core value of contemporary dance is rebellion. The definition of contemporary dance has evolved throughout the decades as dancers continue to discover innovative movements that almost contradict their predecessors, inspiring its ever-evolving aesthetic. Unlike other technical styles like ballet, there is no strict codified “right” or “wrong,” nor is there a set vocabulary, meaning contemporary dance can look like a lot of things. A common conception when it comes to dance in general is how it transcends nationalities as a universal language of sorts. However, given the individualistic nature of contemporary dance and global varieties of …

The structure of dance classrooms has remained largely unchanged for years, with minimal integration of technology to enhance teaching. This has motivated our research project, which aims to capture dance movements using wearable sensors and translate the information into meaningful visualizations to help dancers improve their skills. As the first step in addressing the research question—can data from commercial wearables differentiate between the movements of dancers and non-dancers?—we developed DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging), a platform designed for data collection and movement annotation. We utilized Sony’s Mocopi sensors, a motion capture system with six sensors attached …

Head To Toe: What Do We Think About Heels Dance?, Peyton Winsett
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Through both observation as a dance consumer and personal experience as a dance student, heels dance has noticeably risen in prominence within the commercial dance industry in recent years. This style has primarily been showcased through professional dance classes and in commercial and concept video projects. This study seeks to understand the reasons behind this sudden growth in appeal, the potential social implications of this increasing popularity, and the varying perspectives on this style across generations. It synthesizes past research and analyzes a survey conducted with current students in Chapman University's dance department. This presentation will investigate the motivations driving …

Having experienced the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic as GenZ, this research is a means to explore a topic that is relevant to current collegiate dance students and their studies. With the increase in fitness media influencers during the mass isolation periods of the Pandemic, many dancers gravitated toward these unique forms of cross-training. The unlimited access to these abundant resources raises the question of the quality of training dancers were/are getting in mass consumption. This study includes an exploration of the validity of these exercises and the frequency of use within the dance community. These topics will be explored …

The structure of dance classrooms has remained unchanged for several years. Very little, if any, technology has been incorporated to improve the quality of teaching. This has motivated our research project, whose goal is to capture dance movements with wearable sensors, to develop DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging). This is a platform that allows the gathering of data captured by Sony’s Mocopi sensors and annotating them with the dancer's movements. The Mocopi sensors make up a motion capture system. It is comprised of six small, round sensors that can be attached to velcro straps and clips. …

The Dancer's Unspoken Superpower: Consciousness Of Mind And Body, Mandy Fang
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
“Dancing is visceral, but it is more than just physical,” my jazz professor Steven Sofia likes to say. Dancing is an art of multitasking; it’s interdisciplinary in that it is physically, but also mentally overwhelming on a dancer’s conscious mind. Psychologically, dancers can be more efficient in how they approach training, but there’s a lack of prioritizing the conscious connection between mind and body in the dance community.
So, what mindfulness tactics can contemporary dancers utilize to most efficiently bridge their conscious mind with their physical body? Made possible with funding from the Center of Undergraduate Excellence, I attended Alonzo …
