Since 1946, many clowns have recorded their makeup by having it painted on eggs that are kept in a central registry in Wookey Hole, England. This tradition, which continues today, has been referred to alternately as a form of informal copyright registration and a means of protecting clowns’ property in their personae. This Article explores the Clown Egg Register and its surrounding practices from the perspective of law and social norms. In so doing, it makes several contributions. First, it contributes another chapter to the growing literature on the norms-based governance of intellectual property, showing how clowns—like comedians, roller derby …

The traditional notion of the Male Gaze, first conceptualized by feminist film critic Laura Mulvey in 1975, focused on the objectification of women through depictions structured to gratify a male heterosexual perspective. In this chapter we will revisit this concept and investigate how that gaze may have shifted away from a primarily heterosexual perspective to a socially dominant male perspective (maleness here referring to dominance rather than specific gender, just as “whiteness” might refer to privilege rather than race). Mozart’s The Magic Flute is a classic opera, showcasing powerful visual moments and well-known songs. This particular production’s lighting design approach consisted of modern design ideas and aesthetics, while remaining true to the classic idea of 2 forces working against one another. Focusing on the major themes in The Magic Flute, the lighting design reinforces the feelings of fear, despair, hope and ultimately enlightenment. This paper describes the process and execution of how the lighting design achieved these goals.

This document chronicles my journey designing the lighting for Carol Churchill’s Cloud 9 in the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University. Starting with the initial read, this paper will continue through the early meetings and initial concepts discussed by the design team. This paper delves into the life and career of Jean-Étienne Despréaux (1748-1820), as read through a catalogue of his library. The catalogue, the earliest known detailed record of books owned by a dancing master, was printed after Despréaux’s death to announce the sale of his library in a 3-day auction. It reveals Despréaux’s wide-ranging reading interests and his desire to build a comprehensive collection of books about dance—a collection that would anticipate the modern notion of a canon of historical dance monuments. The myth that musical theatre actors cannot act is alive and well. Director, musician and lecturer Dr Zachary Dunbar asserts that the industry frequently chooses between actors who cannot sing or singers who cannot act (2016, 71). Popular blogger WestEndProducer purports that the musical theatre ‘twirley’ is often considered as a jack of all trades but a master of none (2017). Introduction: Recent three-dimensional (3D) kinematic research has revealed foot abduction is the strongest predictor of standing functional and forced turnout postures. However, it is still unknown how the internal foot joints enable a large degree of foot abduction in turnout. The primary purpose of this study was to use a dance specific multi-segment foot model to determine the lower leg and foot contributions to turnout that female university-level ballets use to accentuate their turnout. Methods: Eighteen female dance students (mean age, 18.8 ± 1.6 years) volunteered for this study. Retro-reflective markers were attached to the dancers' dominant foot. Each dancer …

Importance: Social support is a major determinant of health for geriatric oncology patients. Nevertheless, no DMT program utilizes community building as an explicit focus of intervention.

Objective: To design a DMT that fosters a therapeutic approach which relies as much on the interpersonal relationships as on the intrapersonal journey. Design, setting, participants: 12 weeks observational trial of participants, from TJUH geriatric oncology patient population, as they progressed through two series of social dance workshops. This research project titled Dancing Elements explores choreographic conversations between the body and natural elements, specifically water on film. I question how natural elements when viewed in relation to the dancing body, can begin to be seen as a dancing entity. This thesis project argues for the value of Henry Arthur Jones’s work in the late 1890s and seeks to illustrate that Jones’s contribution to the larger Modernist movement in the theatre. Using a close textual analysis of Jones’s plays Michael and His Lost Angel, Judah, and Saints and Sinners, this project examines Jones’s use of popular theatrical genres to provide commentary on the religious and fiscal tensions in the surrounding Victorian society. El presente artículo aborda el estudio comparado del drama de Kaj Munk Ordet y la adaptación homónima al cine de Carl Th. Dreyer. El recurso al concepto de “reescritura fílmica” nos permite entender la relación de adaptación entre ambas obras de forma comprensiva, atendiendo a los procesos de remediación que llevan a la creación de un “cine teatralizado”. Igualmente, en la idea de reescritura se sostiene el análisis de las derivaciones ideológicas que abren el texto literario original al laicismo y a la ambigüedad poética en su versión cinematográfica.

Black Star, Other Fetishized: Carlos Acosta, Ballet’S New Cosmopolitanism, And Desire In The Age Of Institutional Diversity, Lester Tomé

Focusing on Carlos Acosta, the Cuban performer who became the first black principal dancer of London’s Royal Ballet, this chapter proposes that a new cosmopolitanism characterizes contemporary ballet. Such cosmopolitanism, informed by the institutionalization of diversity, is achieved through the presence of Latin American and Asian dancers in European and North American companies. Inclusion of the subaltern lends these institutions an image of multiculturalism and globality that increases their social capital. Yet, ballet’s new cosmopolitanism impels subaltern dancers to negotiate the fraught politics of moving from the periphery to the center, where they find themselves both valued and devalued for …

This paper represents the final culmination of a theater senior project. The project consisted of an analytical research paper, performance in a mainstage department production, and supporting process documentation. I portrayed Myrrha, Hunger, Zeus, and others in a production of the play Metamorphoses.

Through research on Mary Zimmerman’s 1998 play Metamorphoses, adapted from the works of Roman poet Ovid, this thesis grapples with the historical meaning of the myth of Myrrha.
