Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta

Typically, singing training for the musical theatre student is divided into three subjects: music theory, private voice instruction and acting through song. By separating the study of the components of musical theatre performance, musical theatre programs reinforce this compartmentalization and few students are able to make connections between these components in performance. This thesis gives an account of my design of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of musical theatre, specifically a class I developed called Singing for the Actor. Radio drama is an intriguing aspect of performance that is often underappreciated in current culture, but it can play an incredible role in communicating and allowing for emotion and truth to be presented richly.

When Mary Shelley began writing The Last Man in 1824 in the wake of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley’s untimely death, she drew from her close circle of family and friends as models for her main characters. Although it is tempting to view this novel as an autobiographical expiation of the profound sorrow that overwhelmed Shelley at her husband’s death, to do so is to underestimate her prescient political insight and to risk overlooking the complex implications of class and rank that suffuse the position of the narrator, Lionel Verney. In Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote, the unruly Arabella clashes with the eighteenth century’s conception of England as an orderly, unromantic site of commercial trade. Arabella’s romances prompt her to expect certain power structures from English society; she invites others to see her body as a spectacle and expects that her actions will solidify her status as a powerful woman. Yet Lennox reveals that English society sees Arabella’s body not as powerful, but as an object upon which they may construct their own potential site for the exchange of knowledge, an objectification that neither Arabella nor Lennox are prepared …

We traveled to France and interviewed many people, learning a great deal about what happiness means to people from this country. Our questions were simple: Could you tell us a story from a time in your life when you were happy? And could you tell us one from when you were sad? Theatre Triad is a new approach to devising collaborative ensemble theatre starting with the three main components of Performance: Voice, Movement, and Text. These components were deconstructed and reconstructed in pairs as the basis for the devising process. The performance process begins with creating an ensemble followed by four steps: exploring the theatrical genres affiliated with the pairings of Voice and Movement, Movement and Text, Voice and Text, and completed with reintegrating all three components. In 1913, the audience at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées erupted in one of the most infamous riots of the 20th century. The cause? A revolution in music, namely the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s primal Le sacre du printemps, or The Rite of Spring. For the piece’s centennial, virtuosi pianists Sarah Rothenberg and Marilyn Nonken have created The Grand Gesture, a stark deconstruction of Stravinsky’s masterpiece. Add to the mix Olivier Messiaen’s equally uproarious Visions de l’Amen (1946) and you have an evening of experimental classics defying convention.
