When I originally acquired funding from the ORCA office I entitled my project Mormons and Drugs. I had planned on making a documentary film chronicling the lives of Latter-day Saints that struggle or have struggled with drug addiction. I was enrolled in a documentary production class (TMA 274) in Winter 2005 and in this class I began making the film about Latter-day Saint drug addicts. I focused primarily on my brother and my relationship to him. As I shot and edited that film, I realized the power of re-drafting. Commedia dell’arte is the Italian theatrical form that ruled supreme from the 13th – 18th centuries. Created in a time when the theatre tradition in Europe revolved around the classic, “cold” theatre, commedia is often seen as a revolt, becoming wildly popular while managing to rewrite the rules of what makes good theatre. Commedia revolved around the world of improvisation. Stock characters of scrupulous detail were created, relationships were determined, scenarios and situations were created, and the actors were left the opportunity to “heighten, vary, and embellish their parts as their genius might suggest.” This new form of theatre created …

The five weeks I spent in Europe completing the primary research and performance of Enchanted April afforded a different research focus than I had originally intended. The program’s director changed the format of the endeavor before rehearsals ever began. What originated as an endeavor in primary research as it relates to performative dramaturgy quickly became an experiment in compromise and creative downsizing. Early in Fall of 2004 I purchased and completed a series of DVD tutorials on advanced CGI animation techniques with the hope that I would be able to reimburse myslef for the purchase with ORCA funds. These DVDs covered a variety of subjects, including modeling, animating, rigging, texturing, lighting and particle manipulation. These DVDs allowed me to rapidly move forward in a more comprehensive understanding of the skill-set necessary to work in a professional environment. According to legend it was used as a form of communication and unification amongst the African slaves from varying tribes and lingual backgrounds in defying their masters. It has since developed in Brazil as a unique art form combining dance, song, and martial arts to provide both physical and emotional development and discipline for those involved.

Some of the best lessons of life are found in folk and fairytales and classic children’s stories. The aim of the Theater and Media Art Department’s Children’s Media Initiative is to adapt these tales and stories for the screen in order to produce short films to be aired on KBYU and other networks and film festivals. These films will appeal to parents and children, bringing the family together to watch. Rather than encouraging escapism, these films will facilitate discussion of relevant values and themes addressed in film.

Film and video preservation and restoration is one of the most pressing unsolved problems faced by libraries and studios today. The basics of this science, unlike that of book preservation, are still being explored and developed. The end goal of my project was to compile and create a resource using materials culled from the best research to date on this problem. The preservation committee of the BYU Harold B. The vision of The Department of Theatre and Dance’s Intersection Project was to provide points of intersection between artists and community with experiences that all creative artists share, focusing especially on inter-generational exchanges. One element of the Intersections Project was the collaborative creation of an original performance entitled Ancestra. Four student researcher/performers joined twelve Cleveland performance artists, ages 18-73, to create and present the docu-performance, Ancestra. Research for this project focused on the transcript of the 1853 National Women’s Rights Convention held in Cleveland, OH as well as other primary sources from the Women’s Suffrage Movement. As the debate over the necessity of the arts in the classroom continues, this project allowed me to discover clear and measurable benefits for their inclusion in regular classroom instruction. Freud’s Last Session focuses on psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud who has invited Oxford professor C. S. Lewis to his London home. The two men enter debate about the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life – only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own.

In their article "Video Games and Citizenship" Jeroen Bourgonjon and Ronald Soetaert argue that digitization problematizes and broadens our perspective on culture and popular media and that this has important ramifications for our understanding of citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert respond to the call of Gert Biesta for the contextualized study of young people's practices by exploring a particular aspect of digitization that affects young people, namely video games. They explore the new social spaces which emerge in video game culture and how these spaces relate to community building and citizenship. In their article "Rhetorical Analysis of Literary Culture in Social Reading Platforms" Joachim Vlieghe and Kris Rutten present a case study of the discourse surrounding literary phenomena that are emerging within social media. The case study is part of a methodological exploration within literacy studies whereby the social media's transformative effects on literary literacies are studied by focusing on language as symbolic and situated action. Vlieghe and Rutten have identified unique social reading platforms based on a prolonged study of the social media environment.
