With the passing of the Licensing Act of 1737 and until its repeal in 1969 the Lord Chamberlain’s office has been legally able to censor any drama to be performed at established theatres in England. However, the 1737 Act left inconsistencies in the definition of censorship and the role of censor. People who were involved in theatre believed the Lord Chamberlain’s office gained too much power from the Act. In the nineteenth century, actors, playwrights and members of Parliament agitated for the reform of the 1737 Licensing Act, which led to the establishment of three special parliamentary committees in 1822-1823, …

Living-learning communities, although not a novel concept, have been known to promote student performance and a sense of collegiality. Because nursing is essential to the medical profession, nursing student retention and pass rates are of paramount importance. Attrition tends to happen to nursing students in their first formative years (Newton & Moore, 2009). Therefore, this study was conducted to explore findings associated with living arrangements and residential factors promoting and deterring retention. This project aims to pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Emancipated Proclamation with a full presentation of August Wilson’s monumental 10-play cycle on African American life in each decade of the twentieth century. The accompanying Re-Visioning Tomorrow Forums explored ongoing themes in urban communities.

Central to American nineteenth century life was the theater. As the fratricidal fighting of the American Civil War broke out and divided the nation, this centrality remained, and audiences crowded into the theaters. For both north and south, the theater provided an outlet through which Americans could enjoy plays, performances, music, and variety shows that appealed to all social classes of American society. However, in order to understand the operations of theater companies during the war itself, it is first essential to examine the state of the theater as a concept during the mid-nineteenth century, and in the pre-war years. …

In this chapter, I look at the various ways in which different individuals--Iranians, Iranian immigrants in the West, Americans, and other non-Iranians--participated in several revival Iranian dance movements, beginning in the 1930s and continuing into the twenty-first century. The new interest in dance that began in this period coincided with a period of incipient modernity and its need to find ways in which to construct a modern national identity. Panel three, the second of three panels in the exhibit focused on the general history of the Dory Fleet, chronicles events from the 1940s to the 1990s. These include information about changes in the design of dories, the amount of salmon caught during the “heyday” of commercial fishing, and the increased regulation of the fishing industry.

The first of three panels in the exhibit that provide general historical highlights about the Dory Fleet, panel two features a timeline of events from 1855 to 1935. It incorporates a section from the Oregon House Calendar of 1927, chronicling the introduction and passage of House Bill 282. This legislation closed the Nestucca River to commercial fishing. The panel also includes an excerpt from the 1927 version of the Oregon Voters’ Pamphlet that describes an initiative to overturn the legislative action.

Like many fishing communities, the Pacific City dory community honors its fleet, asks for bountiful and safe fishing for the coming season, and remembers those who have died during the year at the annual Blessing of the Fleet. The ceremony is held on the beach the first Saturday in June. In a similar vein, the community celebrates the dories and honors those who made significant contributions to the fleet and the community during the Memorial Wall Ceremony. This observance normally takes place during Dory Days. Panel 13 describes both of these events.
