During the 200^th anniversary of Austen’s death in 2017, the narrative of Austen’s rise to fame and her ongoing celebrity circulated throughout modern culture. But how did this happen? When Austen died in 1817, it was not obvious that Austen would become the archetypal British woman writer. Frances Burney was far more famous in her lifetime than Austen was in hers, and Burney’s novels (particularly Evelina and Cecilia) achieved as much, if not more, critical acclaim than Austen’s works. Sculpture as a medium is inherently connected to legacy making. In producing three- dimensional monuments designed to withstand the test of time, women artists provided evidence of the lasting quality and permanence of their creative acts. This article examines the actress, sculptress and novelist Anne Damer’s sculpture of the famous actress turned Countess Eliza Farren (c. 1788), paying particular attention to the relationship between sculpture as a static art form that captures tactile embodied presence and the ephemerality of performance. How do we trace the historical processes that grant some writers visibility and, hence, legacy, while shoving others into the historical closet? This essay offers the case study of Elizabeth Boyd (1727-1745), a novelist, poet, and playwright who has received some attention from scholars interested in women’s contributions to the legacy of William Shakespeare in the second quarter of the eighteenth century. In this dissertation, I investigate transnational ritual poetics of Blackness through a historical, cultural, and spatial lens, centering my exploration on the recurrence of circles, the crossroads, and waterways. I show how these formal poetics activate Africana cosmologies, cosmogonies, and mythologies dramaturgically by centering contemporary New York City performance works that bring together dance, theatre, and music. I have chosen to include this line “There’s a double meaning in that” (spoken by Benedick in Act 2 scene 3) in the title of this analysis as a way of introducing the play’s two heroines: Hero and Beatrice, and my argument that these women’s names at once symbolically exemplify and ironically contrast with their characters’ natures. In her second Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Sweat, Nottage dramatizes more recent US history, illuminating the lives of workers marginalized by the deindustrialization of the Rust Belt in the early 2000s. This project seeks to answer the question, “How can a writer use an old story to shine new light on modern issues and make the invisible visible?” My adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a genderbent retelling with queer themes while my adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is a dark reimagining of Mrs. Darling as an antihero protagonist who must become Captain Hook to try to save her children. Both my research and these two plays focus on bringing visibility to marginalized communities, specifically women and members of the queer community.

In this article, I deal with the disparagement of femininity and trans persons in multiple levels of our culture, including in some feminist theory and Shakespearean criticism. I point out that contemporary culture, patriarchal institutions, and some feminist positions share misogynistic stances towards expressions and embodiments of femininity; and these perspectives carry over into some criticism, as well as our academic institutions and classrooms. I place the 2015-released film Suffragette within a context of the efforts Elizabeth Robins made to document and, by witnessing, to advocate, the early phases of the British Women’s Suffrage Movement in England. Robins wrote and participated across margins. An expatriate American living in England, she had no personal advantage to gain with a franchise. In her late forties and in ill health, she took perhaps only "safe" opportunities to thrust herself into the fray. Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). I first contextualize existing literature about sexual assault and the limited research about feminine men regarding sexual violence and assault. วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้ที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับกระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องเพลงลูกกรุง โดยใช้หลักการและแบบฝึกหัดลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์มาปรับใช้สำหรับการสอน โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์คือเพื่อค้นหาแนวทางการสอนการแสดงและแบบฝึกหัดทางการแสดงที่เหมาะสมในการถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลงสำหรับนักร้อง และเพื่อให้ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษากระบวนการสอนการแสดงสำหรับนักร้องอย่างลึกซึ้ง ซึ่งในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ดำเนินการในฐานะครูสอนการแสดง และได้เลือกศึกษากับผู้เข้ารับวิจัยจำนวน 5 คน โดยมีคุณสมบัติดังต่อไปนี้ 1) เป็นบุคคลกลุ่มเพศใดก็ได้ 2) เป็นผู้ที่มีอายุ 18 ปีขึ้นไป 3) เป็นผู้ที่มีพื้นฐานการร้องเพลงอยู่แล้ว 4) เป็นผู้ที่ต้องการพัฒนาศักยภาพของตนเองในด้านถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านบทเพลง ผู้วิจัยได้ออกแบบแผนการสอนที่เน้นใช้แบบฝึกหัดของลี สตราสเบิร์ก และแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้ฝึกไว้เป็นหลัก ซึ่งมีระยะเวลาการสอนทั้งหมดจำนวน 12 ครั้ง ครั้งละ 3 ชั่วโมง และเมื่อผู้เข้ารับวิจัยเรียนครบตลอดแผนการสอนแล้วจึงได้จัดคอนเสิร์ตประกอบวิทยานิพนธ์เพื่อแสดงต่อหน้าผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิเพื่อนำข้อเสนอแนะรวมถึงแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชมมาประเมินผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแบบฝึกหัดและหลักการของทั้งลี สตราสเบิร์กและแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ ที่ผู้วิจัยนำสอนสามารถใช้พัฒนาผู้เข้ารับวิจัยได้เป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่าหลักการของลีสตราสเบิร์กในเรื่องของการสร้างความจริงจากภายในโดยใช้จิตนาการแห่งการรื้อฟื้นความทรงจำในอดีตนั้น สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับการวิจัยสามารถถ่ายทอดและสื่อสารความรู้สึกออกมาได้อย่างจริงใจได้จริง รวมถึงแบบฝึกหัดการพูดซ้ำ (Repetition) ในหลักการของแซนฟอร์ด ไมส์เนอร์ที่เน้นให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับมีสติปัจจุบันขณะแม้อยู่ภายใต้สถานการณ์สมมตินั้นก็สามารถทำให้ผู้เข้ารับวิจัยอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะ (Moment) ได้เป็นอย่างดี แต่ทั้งนี้ฝึกฝนอย่างสม่ำเสมอเพื่อรักษาเสถียรภาพการอยู่กับปัจจุบันขณะให้มั่นคงจนสามารถนำสามารถมาใช้ได้เป็นเองโดยอัตโนมัติ การทำวิจัยครั้งนี้ทำให้ผู้วิจัยค้นพบการที่จะช่วยให้ผู้เรียนพัฒนาได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดนั้นแบบฝึกหัดอย่างเดียวอาจจะไม่พอ จะต้องขึ้นอยู่กับความตั้งใจของผู้เรียนเองเพราะพลังแห่งความตั้งใจนี้จะส่งผลให้ผู้เรียนไม่ทำอะไรอย่างครึ่งๆ กลางๆ และสามารถพัฒนาตนเองได้อย่างก้าวกระโดด อีกประการหนึ่งคือทักษะด้านการร้องเพลงของผู้เรียนเอง ผู้เรียนควรมีทักษะการร้องที่ดีอยู่แล้วจึงจะต่อยอดทักษะทางด้านนี้ต่อไปได้ เพราะหากยังพะวงเกี่ยวกับการร้องเพลงของตนเองอยู่ จะส่งผลทำให้เกิดภาวะที่เรียกว่าสมาธิผิดที่ได้โดยง่าย นอกจากนี้ครูผู้สอนจำเป็นจะต้องมีความรู้ทางด้านการแสดงที่แม่นยำเพื่อที่จะได้ฝึกผู้เรียนได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพอันนำไปสู่การพัฒนาอย่างสูงสุด

งานวิจัยนี้ได้ดำเนินการในสามส่วนหลัก ๆ ได้แก่ การวิเคราะห์กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ในการผลิตภาพยนตร์ในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ในฐานะระบบนิเวศทางวัฒนธรรม โดยการวิเคราะห์อุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์และโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ในฐานะระบบวัฒนธรรมที่พึ่งพาอาศัยกันของผู้คนที่เชื่อมโยงกับองค์กร สถาบัน ธุรกิจ ระบบเทคโนโลยี และปฏิบัติการเชิงสร้างสรรค์ในการผลิตภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัล ส่วนต่อมา คือ การรวบรวมข้อมูลและประเมินทรรศนะของกลุ่มผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียในระบบนิเวศทางวัฒนธรรมเกี่ยวกับสภาพการณ์ปัจจุบัน ปัญหาสำคัญ และความต้องการในอนาคต เพื่อรักษาและเสริมสร้างระบบในงานด้านภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และส่วนสุดท้าย คือ การออกแบบแผนยุทธศาสตร์เพื่อพัฒนาและปรับปรุงระบบนิเวศของอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ตามวิถีของความยั่งยืน แผนยุทธศาสตร์ดังกล่าวนี้ได้ระบุถึงโอกาสสำหรับจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ในการพัฒนาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานและทรัพยากรบุคคลในอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลผ่านการดำเนินการสองระยะ ได้แก่ ระยะแรกเป็นการมุ่งเน้นและเสริมจุดแข็งเพื่อการเป็น “เมืองที่เป็นมิตรกับภาพยนตร์” ผ่านการจัดงานและกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ และระยะหลังเป็นการพัฒนาคุณลักษณะเฉพาะของระบบนิเวศในงานด้านภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ไปสู่ความเป็นเมืองภาพยนตร์ที่ยั่งยืนผ่านโครงการและแผนงานที่มีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นผู้วิจัยได้ใช้วิธีดำเนินการวิจัยแบบผสานวิธี คือใช้ทั้งการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการสำรวจความคิดเห็นจากประชาชนในท้องถิ่น การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วม ตลอดจนการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลจากหนังสือ วารสาร เอกสาร และงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องผลการศึกษาพบว่า คุณลักษณะเฉพาะของระบบนิเวศของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ที่ส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัล และนับเป็นจุดแข็งที่ชัดเจน ได้แก่ ทรัพยากรบุคคลที่มีความรู้และความคิดสร้างสรรค์ โดยเฉพาะบุคลากรที่มีมากขึ้นในอุตสาหกรรมนี้ ทั้งในเชิงปริมาณและคุณภาพ และรองลงมาคือสภาพการณ์ปัจจุบันของพื้นที่ซึ่งมีความโดดเด่นและเป็นเอกลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนจังหวัดอื่น ๆ ทั้งด้านคุณภาพชีวิต โครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางเทคโนโลยีที่ทันสมัย ความพร้อมในธุรกิจภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัล สถานที่ถ่ายทำที่หลากหลาย และเครือข่ายระดับนานาชาติ อีกทั้งประชาชนในท้องถิ่นยังมีความต้องการให้มุ่งเน้นการพัฒนาคนรวมถึงการสร้างเสริมโอกาสงานเป็นอันดับแรก เพื่อให้คนเป็นกำลังสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนการพัฒนาในมิติอื่น ๆ ต่อไปส่วนประเด็นสำคัญในการสร้างแผนยุทธศาสตร์นี้มี 3 ประเด็นหลัก ได้แก่ 1) การกำหนดแนวทางแผนปฏิบัติการเร่งรัดสำหรับการจัดกิจกรรมทางภาพยนตร์ในพื้นที่เพื่อสร้างความตื่นตัวและการมีส่วนร่วมภาคประชาชนให้แก่ผู้คนในท้องถิ่นตามวิถีนิเวศวัฒนธรรม 2) การจัดตั้งหน่วยงานเฉพาะ องค์กร หรือเครือข่ายขึ้นเพื่อดูแลรับผิดชอบงานด้านภาพยนตร์ในพื้นที่ ตลอดจนการอัปเดตข้อมูลข่าวสารและกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง 3) ความสอดคล้องกับแผนพัฒนาจังหวัดและเชื่อมต่อกับนโยบายภาครัฐที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยอาศัยโอกาสในการพัฒนาทรัพยากรบุคคลและโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของพื้นที่จากอุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยวและอุตสาหกรรมไมซ์ ซึ่งสามารถช่วยสร้างเสริมอัตลักษณ์ของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ให้มีเสน่ห์และความโดดเด่นยิ่งขึ้นในฐานะ “เมืองที่เป็นมิตรกับภาพยนตร์” ด้วยระบบนิเวศทางวัฒนธรรมที่สร้างสรรค์สำหรับงานด้านภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลดังนั้น ผู้วิจัยจึงได้กำหนดประเด็นพัฒนาในแผนยุทธศาสตร์การพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ดิจิทัลจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ตามวิถีนิเวศวัฒนธรรมไว้ 4 ด้านด้วยกัน ได้แก่ ด้านศักยภาพของคน ศักยภาพของพื้นที่ การจัดการ และการมีส่วนร่วม โดยมีเป้าหมายในระยะสั้นไปสู่การเป็นเมืองที่เป็นมิตรกับภาพยนตร์ และปูทางไปสู่เป้าหมายระยะยาวในการเป็นเมืองภาพยนตร์ที่ยั่งยืนต่อไป
