This dissertation studies identity formation and race informed by the discipline Whiteness Studies. As such this dissertation conceptualizes Spanish Whiteness historically and analyzes its representation in Spanish narrative in prose and film. This research responds to two questions: 1) How has Spanish culture historically instrumentalized Blackness thus contributing to the creation of the Western’s conceptualization of Whiteness? 2) What does Spanish representation of Empire say about its Whiteness? Yanqui hirsutus, de Manuel de la Sota, resulta una obra interesante para aproximarse a la posición del nacionalismo vasco durante el exilio causado por la Guerra Civil. Según la fecha que se incluye al final del libro, Sota terminó de escribirlo el 19 de mayo de 1946 en Nueva York, aunque no se publicó hasta 1949 en Buenos Aires. La mujer moderna era aquella que en las primeras décadas del siglo xx rompía con la imagen y el comportamiento femenino tradicional basado en el papel de esposa y madre abnegada. This article analyzes the interconnections between migration and masculinity in Vida de un emigrante español (1979), by Víctor Canicio. This novel, based on true events, tells the story of a working-class man called Pedro Nuño, who displays a traditional conception of masculinity based on the importance of the heteronormative home, procreation, and sacrifice for his family. Pedro decides to migrate to Germany to achieve a better future for his family and feel more respected as a man by earning money and accomplishing economic independence. In this way, migration enhances his sense of masculinity. On the other hand, the novel also …

Second Language Learning With The Story Maze Task: Examining The Training Effect Of Weaving Through Stories, Elizabeth Enkin

The maze task is a psycholinguistic experimental procedure that measures real-time incremental sentence processing. The task has recently been tested as a language learning tool with promising results. Therefore, the present study examines the merits of a contextualized version of this task: the story maze. The findings are consistent with previous research results (Enkin & Forster, 2014), and highlight the merits of using the contextualized maze version for language (Spanish) learning. Specifically, a story maze training-test paradigm revealed that learners trained on structures differing from their native language (English) showed little difference in reaction times between similar-to-English and different-from-English structures …

The Coastal Review

The exile of Manuel Altolaguirre, poet of the Generation of ‘27, touches on Spanish and Latin American literature and culture. The article examines the attitudes and beliefs of the avant-garde from the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and the Second Republic through the Spanish Civil War and into exile. Using Altolaguirre’s experiences in Cuba and Mexico, the article discusses exile literature and the dislocations of Spanish refugees struggling to make a living on the fly and feeling further isolated and forgotten in the upheavals of the Second World War.
