From The National Context To Its Margins: When The World Used Literature To Respond To The Great War, Toby Garfitt, Nicolas Bianchi
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
By shedding light on some original responses to the Great War that are today hardly known, and by asking the same questions of many works written in contexts which were radically different, this STTCL special issue advocates for a genuinely comparative approach to this literature. Born in a context of nationalist withdrawal, these cultural objects also had a paradoxically wide circulation (due to early translations, commentaries, literary reactions, and so on), which is why study of these apparently isolated writers is so valuable.
Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia
Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article analyses the writings of French writer and journalist Marcelle Capy (1891–1962), who held an uncommon position in the French intellectual field throughout the First World War. Going against the mainstream French feminist groups, who all prioritized loyalty to the fatherland over pacifism, Capy remained faithful to her socialist and anti-war creed. Although little known to the larger French public, Capy’s double marginality as a woman and as a pacifist makes her work a singular testimony of the war years as well as a significant example of the rejection of the national climate and Union sacrée’s rhetoric. Claire Legendre’S Portrait Of Hypermodern Society, Michèle A. Schaal
Claire Legendre’S Portrait Of Hypermodern Society, Michèle A. Schaal
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Theorists from various academic disciplines believe Western society has entered an age of excess and exacerbated modernity: all areas of life are affected by a will to be or do more at an always faster pace. This article focuses on French writer Claire Legendre’s literary translation of hypermodernity, especially in her narratives published over the past decade. First, it examines her portrayal of contemporary individuality, marked by all sorts of excesses and especially by the imperative to make the most of oneself and one’s life. This ideal being in itself excessive, her characters resort to extreme behaviors. However, they never …

Germany has seen a recent upsurge in publications proclaiming that feminism is again an urgent matter for a new generation of women. Faced with the reactionary demography debate and the hegemony of second-wave feminism, young writers, musicians, journalists, and critics call for new models of feminism relevant to women today. As one of these viable models, popfeminism draws on dominant trends in mass culture, on pop’s forty-year history as a cultural prefix in Germany, and on traditional feminism in order to create a new, ostensibly apolitical, feminist subculture based in self-stylization and individual autonomy. Shared by many popfeminist sources is …

Juan Ramón Jiménez And Nietzsche, John P. Devlin
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The young Juan Ramón Jiménez shared the enthusiasm for the writings of Nietzsche prevalent among his contemporaries. More significant are the interest in and affinity with Nietzsche which persisted into the poet's maturity. Jiménez found in Nietzsche not only a man of ideas but a poet who claimed to be a potent spiritual force. Both writers held that the modern age could recover a sense of spiritual integrity through the will of the individual to live and interpret human existence as an aesthetic phenomenon. Nietzsche's views on the nature of art and the role of the artist helped to sustain …

Crime And Detection In A Defective World: The Detective Fictions Of Borges And Dürrenmatt, Tamara Holzapfel
Crime And Detection In A Defective World: The Detective Fictions Of Borges And Dürrenmatt, Tamara Holzapfel
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The debt of contemporary writers to detective fiction, both in theme and technique, has been noted in recent criticism. However, studies of a comparative nature are virtually nonexistent. This article attempts to show some remarkable parallels in the approach taken by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Jorge Luis Borges to a genre which, as yet, has not acquired recognition as literary art form. The similarities of the two authors are striking both with respect to their world view and to their transformation of the genre through poetic treatment. Detective fiction, which lends itself readily to innovation and parody, is used by these …
