Marginalidad Y Subversión En Tres Novelas De Juan Filloy De La Década De 1930, Sonia M. Tejada

This dissertation focuses on the concepts of marginality and subversion in three novels written by Juan Filloy in the 1930s: ¡Estafen! (1932), Op Oloop (1934) and Caterva (1937). I study these novels in the context of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s and 1930s. I analyze the transformation that the concepts of marginality and subversion undergo when they are explored within the context of the avant-garde aesthetics, instead of that of social realism. This essay analyzes the literary representation of Isabel Luberza Oppenheimer in the short stories “Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres” by Rosario Ferré and “La última plena que bailó Luberza” by Manuel Ramos Otero, both originally published in the seventh edition of the literary journal Zona. Carga y Descarga (1972–1975). Both stories, I argue, appropriate this historical character to transgress the heteronormativity imposed by the hegemonic power and to allow new representations for women and the LGBTQ community in the Puerto Rican literature of the seventies.

In the last few decades, Dominican female writers have contributed significantly to the literary representation of the city of Santo Domingo and urban life. This dissertation studies how these female writers produce a cultural paradigm for criticizing the urban crisis in the Dominican Republic that at times is at odds with much narrative written by men and with key concepts in Urban Theory that are taken for granted. La mucama de Omicunlé (2015) es una novela escrita por la autora dominicana Rita Indiana, que lidia con temas que son considerados tabúes dentro de la sociedad dominicana: sexualidad, identidad de género, y espiritualidad afrodescendiente. Indiana utiliza la espiritualidad afrodescendiente para facilitar la exploración de las respectivas identidades de género y de orientación sexual en los personajes principales, Acilde y Argenis. El utilizar la espiritualidad afrodescendiente también permite ver a la novela como un texto literario que utiliza el patakí, una narración que contiene conocimientos afrodescendientes, como elemento estructural principal. This article presents results of auto-ethnography, literary analysis, and fieldwork research to answer an underlying, perhaps unresolved, concern, relevant to this dossier: how can we produce an ethical dialogue as transnational Black Feminists, among Black Brazilian women, and North American Black women, in an ethical manner, while realizing that one may (not ever) be a part of the “carnival without you in it.” Fertile Earth/ Terra Fertil tells a long overdue epic story to an audience within the poetry: Black women, family members, other times a Black man, Brazil, white women, or “you,” undefined. This dissertation focuses on the representation of Ecuadorians in Spain between 2000 and 2015 in literature, film and the press. After enduring a decade of economic, climatic, and political problems, more than 175,000 Ecuadorians emigrated to Spain in 2001 alone (Herrera 2005). This process marked the beginning of a major migratory movement which has caused Spain to become a premier destination. The response to such migration has been disparate, yet both Ecuadorian and Spanish artists as well as the Spanish press have shown the different perspectives related to a discriminatory ideology. La tumba del buque perdido es una novela que toma como punto de partida el viaje que hiciera Mark Twain a Nicaragua en 1866, cuando entonces funcionaba la antigua Ruta del Tránsito. En esta novela una serie de personajes van en busca de las huellas de ese viaje y de la utopía perdida de un país condenado a una verdad a medias. Asimismo, los personajes van en busca de la identidad perdida en un viaje que mezcla naturaleza, memoria e historia. Hechos reales mezclados con hechos ficticios. Una novela en constante construcción cuyos autores son los mismos protagonistas.

The urban imaginary is that which bases itself in a real physical and concrete space,

but is a construction created through the lense of a city's inhabitants. This thesis follows

narratives that have reconfigured the cities of México City, San Juan and Caracas from the

novels Hotel DF (2010), Simone (2011) and the film Pelo Malo (2013) respectively. These

contemporary Latin American & Caribbean narratives provide insight into sentiments

This work explores the concepts of temporality, memory and history in the play La madrugada by Juan Tovar presented through the use of metatheatricality and intertextuality with works such as Pedro Páramo and various historical corridos. The processes through which official history is constructed are shown in contrast with collective memory that endures in the corrido, the “authentic” voice of the people, suggesting that the only possibility for redemption is found in memory, a space where one can learn from history to rectify the mistakes of the past whose impact in politics and society is felt to this …
