Español (Y Castellano), José Del Valle, Vitor Meirinho Jan 2018

Español (Y Castellano), José Del Valle, Vitor Meirinho

Publications and Research

Memorias Impensables: La Violencia, La Censura Y Las Verdades De Lurgio Gavilán En Memorias De Un Soldado Desconocido, Fritz Stefan Culp Jan 2018

Memorias Impensables: La Violencia, La Censura Y Las Verdades De Lurgio Gavilán En Memorias De Un Soldado Desconocido, Fritz Stefan Culp

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation embarks in previous and current battles for power to control narratives that influence individual and collective memory. As it considers the content of Lurgio Gavilán Sanchez’s autobiography Memorias de un soldado desconocido (When rains became flood), it reviews the methods used to silence counter hegemonic narratives and the formulation of official narratives which determine discourse on political violence – especially, which events are consigned to memory and which are pushed towards oblivion. Both memoirs and physical places of memory are placed in dialog with Michel de Certeau’s theory of historiography and anthropologist Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s ideas regarding the …

Tejidos Urbanos: Representaciones Literarias Y Visuales De La Memoria En La Ciudad Imaginada, Marina Marisela Alvarez Jan 2018

Tejidos Urbanos: Representaciones Literarias Y Visuales De La Memoria En La Ciudad Imaginada, Marina Marisela Alvarez

Master's Theses

The urban imaginary is that which bases itself in a real physical and concrete space,

but is a construction created through the lense of a city's inhabitants. This thesis follows

narratives that have reconfigured the cities of México City, San Juan and Caracas from the

novels Hotel DF (2010), Simone (2011) and the film Pelo Malo (2013) respectively. These

contemporary Latin American & Caribbean narratives provide insight into sentiments

about one's country. Néstor García Canclini and Henri Lefebvre have argued the city is a

whole, and therefore it is analyzed as a microcosm and epicenter of its nation. With

emphasis …

Desde La Caballería A La Cristiandad: La Transformación Espiritual De Don Quijote, Amanda Kathleen Verduin

Master's Theses

Memory, Metatheater, And Intertextuality In "La Madrugada" By Juan Tovar, Brian T. Chandler Jan 2018

Memory, Metatheater, And Intertextuality In "La Madrugada" By Juan Tovar, Brian T. Chandler

The Coastal Review

This work explores the concepts of temporality, memory and history in the play La madrugada by Juan Tovar presented through the use of metatheatricality and intertextuality with works such as Pedro Páramo and various historical corridos. The processes through which official history is constructed are shown in contrast with collective memory that endures in the corrido, the “authentic” voice of the people, suggesting that the only possibility for redemption is found in memory, a space where one can learn from history to rectify the mistakes of the past whose impact in politics and society is felt to this …

Feminist Strategies And The Advancement Of Women In 19th-Century Spain: Press And Freethinking, Benjamín García Egea Jan 2018

Feminist Strategies And The Advancement Of Women In 19th-Century Spain: Press And Freethinking, Benjamín García Egea

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reexamines the rise of feminism in 19th-century Spain. In this historical context, the female writers who received recognition were mostly from the upper-middle classes: Fernán Caballero, Rosalía de Castro, Concepción Arenal and Emilia Pardo Bazán, to name a few. However, at the end of the 19th century there was also a group of female authors from lower-middle classes who were promoting freethinking, secular education and equal rights for women in the press. Unfortunately, their contributions have been largely forgotten and ignored by critics. The main purpose of this study is to give well-deserved recognition to three female authors, …

Reexamining Por And Para In The Spanish Foreign Language Intermediate Classroom: A Usage-Based, Cognitive Linguistic Approach, Elizabeth M. Kissling, Andrea Tyler, Lisa Warren, Lauren Negrete Jan 2018

Reexamining Por And Para In The Spanish Foreign Language Intermediate Classroom: A Usage-Based, Cognitive Linguistic Approach, Elizabeth M. Kissling, Andrea Tyler, Lisa Warren, Lauren Negrete

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The present chapter represents the first stage in the larger investigation; it examines two aspects of applying a usage-based, CL approach to teaching por and para. First, we presented the multiple meanings of the two forms gradually, building learners’ knowledge in a series of scaffolded treatments, throughout the course of an entire semester rather than presenting them all in one concentrated lesson. Second, we presented the multiple meanings of por and para and structured their order of presentation according to a Cognitive Linguistic-inspired analysis, which emphasizes the systematic relationships among the multiple meanings. Such a systematic analysis is consistent …

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair Jan 2018

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair

Honors Program Theses

When one seeks to learn another language, they have the opportunity to not only acquire a new form of communication but also invest and participate in a rich culture. Unfortunately, in many of today’s world language classrooms, learning about target cultures, or the cultures of the peoples who speak the language to be acquired, is treated as being of lesser importance than acquiring new structures and vocabulary. What is more, it is especially rare that students are invited to bring their own cultures and identities into the classroom conversation. In today’s climate, it is vital that students have a safe …
