In 1760 a book was published in Lisbon, Portugal entitled Infermidades da lingua, e arte que a ensina a emmudecer para melhorar (Sicknesses of the tongue, and the art that teaches it to be silent for improvement), in which the use of certain words and phrases in the Portuguese language was strongly denounced. In the title of the work in question and throughout the text, the author describes his vast inventory of words and other expressions as “sicknesses” to the Portuguese language that need to be removed. Critics and readers sometimes unnecessarily limit the scope of what is to be counted as “Basque literature” to texts originally composed in Euskera. In the present study I argue for a hermeneutics of Basque literature that does not seek to identify Basque literature by means of the language of composition, theme, or any particular biographical information about the author. Taking the work of Jorge Luis Borges as a touchstone—and , in particular, his canonical short story, “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote”—I sketch a strategy for reading Basque literature from a minimalist perspective that takes the identity of a …

Even among linguists, there exists some disagreement as to the contribution that various acoustic parameters make or don’t make to the perception of Spanish intonation patterns. The three parameters commonly in question are tone, intensity, and duration. The Spanish and English languages share many cognates because Latin greatly influenced both of them. Spanish is a neo-Latin language; although English is a Germanic language, many of its words have Latin origins. As a result, there are thousands of Latinate words in both languages, but their use is much less frequent in English than in Spanish. English Latinate words are so uncommon that speakers unconsciously use them to sound more intelligent and elegant. English Latinate words tend to have Spanish cognates. During the first quarter of 2005, Brigham Young University’s Spanish Golden Age Theater program performed the theatrical work El caballero de Olmedo, a seventeenth-century production by Lope de Vega, a renowned Spanish playwright. The Golden Age Theater program not only performed the play, but also published a play guide, traveled to Idaho, Texas, Utah, and Mexico, and introduced the Golden Age, giving a small Outreach workshop on key playwrights and occurrences during seventeenth-century Spain, to various elementary, middle, and high schools. This thesis examines the effectiveness of a college preparation course for Hispanic students at Provo High School. Studies indicate that the majority of Hispanic students in the United States are not enrolled in postsecondary institutions. As a result, their education is discontinued after high school. This does not imply that the majority of Hispanic students do not desire to pursue a postsecondary degree; instead it indicates the scarcity and lack of initiatives and outreach programs that steer Hispanic students toward a higher education. Therefore, additional initiatives and outreach programs are required to promote higher college enrollment rates among Hispanic students.

The Office of Research and Creative Activities funded research into the history of my family and their experiences as Mexican-Americans. I was able to investigate what life in Mexico was like for my great-grandparents and their children. Through investigating the manner in which they lived, I was able to understand the reasons for their exodus to the United States. They fled from Mexico to the United States in 1927 while the Cristero Revolt raged in their small city. My project had two phases: first, to translate approximately twenty-five pages of flowery and rather difficult Spanish into clear English; and second, to provide a commentary explaining the relationship of the translated prologue to other similar works within Spanish Romanticism as well as continental Romanticism. The translation phase of the project went smoothly. I used the technique of sentence patterning to separate the clauses in the somewhat convoluted sentences, both so that I could understand them and so that I could translate with faithful attention to the original text. Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. In spite of desegregation and efforts to provide equitable education for all students, minorities and students living in poverty continue to underperform their peers. Education theorists have attributed this achievement gap to a cultural mismatch between students and their teachers and schools. At the same time, instructional communication research has found that cultural differences may influence student perceptions of teacher communication behaviors and that these behaviors have an effect on learning outcomes. This study compared the levels of anxiety that students experienced when taking a foreign language in the classroom with those taking a foreign language at a distance. It also aimed to determine if the student’s academic performance in the course could be predicted by his or her foreign language anxiety level. The sample consisted of 107 undergraduate students (57 traditional classroom students and 50 online students) enrolled in SPAN 101 at Indiana State University in the spring of 2012. Diurnal avian antipredator behavior has been the focus of much past research, yet the influence of the thermal environment on such behaviors is often overlooked. Far less is known about nocturnal avian antipredator behavior, including how these behaviors are influenced by challenging thermal environments. The first portion of my research focused on how the thermal environment influences the diurnal antipredator behavior of wintering birds while (i) exposed to high wind speeds, (ii) foraging in sunlit and shaded microhabitats, and (iii) when using thermoregulatory postures to conserve body heat. In presenting prepositional pronouns, many Spanish textbooks include incluso and excepto in a list of exceptions that are used with the subject pronouns yo and tú, instead of mí and ti. While it is true that incluso and excepto do not directly precede mí and ti, it is not true that they always require the subject pronouns yo and tú. I argue that pronoun use with incluso and excepto is more complicated than indicated in textbooks and that it actually varies according to the context of the sentence.
