This study focuses on the life lessons in Don Quijote de la Mancha, written by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605 (First Part) and 1615 (Second Part). Literary classics can be applicable in current situations to teach valuable life lessons to people in any culture, society, and at any age. The goal was to first analyze and later modify certain episodes in the novel to teach several important, age-appropriate values to children: friendship, acceptance, gender equality, and knowing oneself. This dissertation is a variationist sociolinguistic analysis of the variable word order and prosody of copular constructions (Nicolás es feliz versus Feliz es Nicolás, Es Nicolás feliz, Es feliz Nicolás, ‘Nicolas is happy’) in the Spanish of first- and second-generation Spanish-English bilinguals in New York City (henceforth NYC). The data used for the study come from a spoken corpus of Spanish in NYC based on 140 sociolinguistic interviews (details of the corpus will be presented in Chapter Three). The aim of this paper is to present a contrastive analysis of three high frequency words, sempre ‘always’, mesmo ‘even/really’, and bem ‘well’, in order to inform the instruction of Brazilian Portuguese speakers in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. This work is largely inspired by Ambar, (2008) who compares these same three adverbs’ semantic and syntactic expression in European and Brazilian Portuguese. A multifactorial approach (Costa, 2004) to the analysis of these English/Brazilian Portuguese words demonstrates how the syntax (word order) and semantics (meaning) are inextricably linked and interdependent. In this article, the author focuses on the conference of academies of the Spanish language that took place in Mexico in 1951 and analyzes the discourses on language as well as the views on the linguistic institutions that emerged in the course of the conference. The reasons for the Real Academia Española´s absence are addressed and so is the initiative by Mexico´s president Miguel Alemán.

Este artículo se centra en los usos del pretérito perfecto compuesto (PP) en el español peruano amazónico. Con este propósito, se analizan los valores semánticos del PP en narrativas de experiencias personales por hablantes de español del pueblo de Jeberos (región Loreto). Este estudio ofrece evidencia del proceso de incursión del PP en contextos del pretérito perfecto simple en narraciones orales. Dentro de este marco, discute la relación del PP con adverbios temporales y con otros tiempos verbales. The present investigation compares the acquisition of L2 Spanish discourse markers under explicit and implicit learning conditions. Subjects were fifth-semester Spanish students assigned to an explicit instruction combined with input flood group, an input flood alone group, or a control group. The explicit instruction with input flood group was provided with explicit information about discourse markers. The group then received a flood of written input containing the target forms. Learners were also provided with communicative practice and feedback. The input flood group did not receive explicit instruction on discourse markers. This thesis presents an analysis of six narratives that contribute to the collective memory of the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. This work explores the use of visual culture in Horacio Quiroga's 'La c├â┬ímara oscura', Julio Cort├â┬ízar's 'Apocalipsis de Solentiname', and Rodolfo Walsh's 'Fotos', focusing on its role in the development of a new conceptualization of the argentine space. The visual culture in these short stories, represented through the art of photography, gives the reader a new way of access into a national space that has been historically established by a politically dominated narrative. The picaresque genre and character appeared in what is considered the first modern novel, Lazarillo de Tormes, which was published anonymously in 1554, when Spain was on the cusp of a slow transition out of feudalism. The pícaro has continued to appear in literature across regions and epochs. This thesis looks at the socio-ideological factors that give birth to picaresque identity and behavior, as well as the verisimilitude of fiction in relation to reality. This thesis argues that the fragmented form of the Guatemalan collective memory concerning the genocide can be more clearly understood by analyzing and comparing testimonial literature, documentaries, the Truth Commission report, a novel, and works of performance art. All of these works are considered to be artifacts of memory of the Guatemalan genocide, each one offering a different perspective on the past and present of Guatemala.

The Silenced Women in Spain

Through three novels written by Spanish author, Elena Quiroga (1921-1995), this thesis intends to develop a better comprehension of women's role and identity during the Second Republic in Spain (December, 1931-1936), and under Franco's almost 40 year reign between 1936 and 1975.

Although the Republic sought to initiate change for women via constitutional and legislative reforms, the forms of mobilization occurred under male tutelage, and the Republic's lack of strategy combined with organizational fragmentation led, in some ways, to the immobilization of women. Este artículo ofrece un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de la evolución histórica del léxico disponible de los dominicanos. Una investigación longitudinal ha permitido comparar datos recogidos en 1990 con otros obtenidos con la misma metodología en 2008. Los resultados indican que hay grandes diferencias en la variabilidad léxica exhibida par unos centros de interés, que experimentan cambios importantes, en comparación con la de otros, que parecen inmunes a la variación. Por otra parte, se descubre un incremento de la diferencia que separa a los dos grupos extremos de la escala social al cabo de poco rnenos de 20 años. En …

Publicada en el año 2010, la novela Lengua madre, de la escritora cordobesa María Teresa Andruetto, ofrece otro relato sobre la última dictadura argentina, que pone de relieve el problema de la complicidad civil e indirecta con la política represiva sistemática. El rasgo formal que distingue a la novela de Andruetto dentro de la amplia y heterogénea serie literaria sobre el pasado reciente es que el silencio no es ni una estrategia narrativa para decir lo político, ni el mecanismo mediante el cual lo indecible del horror se hace presente.
