Estas páginas exploran dos de las obras del poeta Jesús Hilario Tundidor, desde la perspectiva de la imagen tradicional de la peregrinatio vitae, tan importante en la literatura española del Siglo de Oro, así como en el seno de las relaciones entre la biografía y la literatura. El poeta se dibuja como un lector reflexivo de la poesía clásica, de cuya pluma se desprende una constante preocupación teórica por la naturaleza de la palabra y el lenguaje. Se trata del único estudio filológico dedicado a la obra Escalada (2006), que ayuda a comprender mejor la trayectoria del poeta.

This is the first article to assess the importance of Luciano Bianciardi’s last novel, Aprire il fuoco [Open Fire!](1969), a work often overlooked, that offers crucial insights into Bianciardi’s commitments to social causes. A so-called “irregular” of 20th-century Italian literary panorama, Luciano Bianciardi (1922-1971) in his Aprire il fuoco discusses his idea of literature as an activity that must aim at assuming the role of ethical guide in societies. In my article, I gloss the often obscure historical and literary references of the novel, and provide a critical assessment of its impact.

Sabbaticals

The primary goal of my sabbatical is to become more proficient in Spanish by cultural immersion. Additionally, I plan to study various forms of agriculture in Central America and possibly South America. The time afforded through this sabbatical will allow me to have an extended stay in Costa Rica to interact with colleagues teaching agriculture at the University of Costa Rica and to immerse myself in the Latino culture.

The article links Galdós's review of Meyerbeer's opera La Africana, published in La Nación in 1865, with his reference to that opera in the "Viaje de novios" [Honeymoon] chapter of Fortunata y Jacinta. The romantic triangle of Sélica, Vasco de Gama, and Inés is compared to that of Fortunata as ambiguous examples of the Orientalized "Other."

This study analyzes the pluralization of the verb haber in Salvadoran Spanish. Spanish uses the verb haber ‘to have’ for existential sentences. According to traditional grammars, existential sentences with haber are impersonal, that is, they are conjugated only in the third-person singular. However, it is common in most Spanish varieties to conjugate haber in the plural when the nominal phrase is plural.

Recent studies have suggested that the pluralization of haber is an innovation in modern Spanish and that it is advancing from lower to higher classes. My study shows that on the contrary there is little evidence indicating that …

Reconsiderations of home have been crucially examined in Caribbean cultural productions. As Jamil Khader argues in her article on “Subaltern Cosmopolitanism: Community and Transnational Mobility in Caribbean Postcolonial Feminist Writings,” Caribbean feminists are faced with the task of challenging a conventional idea of home that has historically located women and other marginal subjects under conditions of oppression and exploitation. In focusing on the narratives by Aurora Levins Morales, Rosario Morales and Esmeralda Santiago, she points out the infinite sense of homelessness that invades, in particular, these Puerto Rican individuals who need to find more productive manners to articulate “home” while …

The demographic majority of the people who reside in Los Angeles are hispanic. This population often utilizes alternative medicine, particularly herbal remedies, to ameliorate their health problems. As such, what herbal medicinal plants do physicians in Los Angeles County need to have background knowledge about to be considered culturally competent? Does the knowledge of medicinal plants dictate one basis for cultural competency? The purpose of this study is to examine ten Latino alternative/folk medicinal remedies from three separate civilizations to identify key ways in which physicians can increase their cultural competency. A literary criticism of the short story "The Two Shores," which appeared in the 1992 book "The Orange Tree," by Carlos Fuentes. The plot and characters of the story are described, particularly the narrator, Jerónimo de Aguilar, a dead man who was held captive by the Mayans. The story is a contribution to the reconsideration of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, particularly Mexico. The idea that the story may present a counterfactual historiography, an idea created by critic Niall Ferguson, is considered.

Emotion, Satire, And A Sense Of Place: Two Spanish Rivers In Lope De Vega’S Sonnets, Mark J. Mascia

The article presents a critique of sonnets that appear in the books "Rimas humanas" (1602), "Rimas humanas y divinas del licenciado Tomé de Burguillos (1634)," by Lope de Vega (1562-1635), particularly focusing on the Spanish rivers Betis, or Guadalquivir River, and the Manzanares River, which appear in the poems. Emphasis is given to the emotional significance of the rivers in the poems, Lope's move from Baroque literary conventions to the Petrarchan mode, and the figure Lucinda, who represents Micaela de Luján, one of Lope's lovers.
