Una Escritora Ilustrada De Fines Del Siglo Xviii Y Principios Del Xix : Maria Rosa De Gálvez, Juana Bertha Laauwe
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis focuses on the life and literary legacy of one of the Hispanic world’s women, María Rosa de Gálvez (1768-1806) who wrote her poetic works and lyrical compositions in the Neoclassic Period. Gálvez is the author of seven original tragic dramas, five original comedies, a collection of poems and two translations.
Since one of the many issues that concerned the Spanish Enlightenment was the abilities and rights of women, this is also included in the analysis. Gálvez’s literary works proposed a new type of woman, like the characters in her plays: strong women who protest the plight of Spanish …

Works of microcultural relevance are characterized by being read and valued primarily within the confines of a given culture. They sometimes do not transcend their own linguistic, geographical, and cultural borders, but rather, bestow upon a country, a territory, or in this case, an island, a sense of identity. Without these works, the cultural profile of a people would be blurred and even non-existent. Consequently, the fact that a work fails to speak to other cultural and linguistic contexts may actually attest to its literary importance. This is the case with the writings of Manuel Zeno Gandía, which lay the …

Dimela Eltit In Labor Force: Mysticism Of The Workers (La Diamela Eltit De Mano De Obra: Mistica De Los Trabajadores), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Image, Expression, And Meaning Of The Mulato In Four Moments Of Cuban Literature (1968-1948), Luciano E. Cruz-Morgado
Image, Expression, And Meaning Of The Mulato In Four Moments Of Cuban Literature (1968-1948), Luciano E. Cruz-Morgado
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
My thesis grows out of a reflection on Cuban literature, race, and national identity within the broader framework of the canon and its marginal literature. It explores the dynamics of the Cuban canon and specific visions of race and nation, and studies one play, two novels, a book of poems and a radio script from four different moments in Cuban history.
Fernández Vilarós´s play Los negros catedráticos (1868) sets for the first time the topic of race at the center of the national debate, immediately before the first and longest Cuban independence war.
The play contrasts with Cecilia Valdés (1882), …
A Comparison Of Joseph Greenberg’S “Language Universals” As Shown In The Palestinian Arabic, Spanish, And Korean Languages, Devon R. Guerra
A Comparison Of Joseph Greenberg’S “Language Universals” As Shown In The Palestinian Arabic, Spanish, And Korean Languages, Devon R. Guerra
Senior Honors Theses
In 1963, Joseph Greenberg presented a way of describing the world’s languages by means of universal tendencies. This thesis will examine three languages representative of the three main language typologies—Palestinian Arabic, Spanish, and Korean. It will compare each of the languages to applicable language universals in order to understand the languages’ syntactical systems and prove the validity of Greenberg’s work.
The Heroides In Alfonso X'S General Estoria: Translation, Adaptation, Use, And Interpretation Of A Classical Work In A Thirteenth-Century Iberian History Of The World, J. Javier Puerto Benito
The Heroides In Alfonso X'S General Estoria: Translation, Adaptation, Use, And Interpretation Of A Classical Work In A Thirteenth-Century Iberian History Of The World, J. Javier Puerto Benito
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
My dissertation analyzes the role of Ovid’s Heroides in Alfonso X’s General Estoria, a massive historical compilation in six volumes that the “Learned King” commissioned in 1272. The way in which eleven of these fictional epistles were incorporated by the Alfonsine translators sheds light on how ancient texts were perceived by medieval scholars. According to the study, King Alfonso relies on Ovid as an accurate historical source and uses the epistles of the heroines as historical documents while preserving their literary dimension.
The thesis is divided into six sections. Chapter one introduces the topic of translation in relation to …
The Acquisition Of Spanish Possessive Adjectives By Beginning Adult Learners Of Spanish, Ryan J. Minier
The Acquisition Of Spanish Possessive Adjectives By Beginning Adult Learners Of Spanish, Ryan J. Minier
Honors Theses
Spanish possessive adjectives (e.g., mi, tu, su, nuestro, vuestro) are commonly introduced to students of Spanish in the later part of their first semester of study. What features characterize this grammatical category in the language? Morphologically, the Spanish possessive adjectives consist of a lexical base that is either free (e.g., mi, tu, su) or bound (e.g., nuestr-, vuestr-). The two bound bases require one of two inflectional morphemes designating grammatical gender: the suffix -o marks the masculine and -a the feminine, according to the gender of the noun modified. Both the free and bound lexical bases …
