Women's relationships to the state, to their societies, and to the construction of national discourses continue to provide topics for at-times-heated debates. On the one hand, generalizing about women in such a way as to claim that all women have a particular type of connection to political or social phenomena runs the risk of subsuming certain categories of difference—racial, ethnic, class, sexual—at the same time that it attempts to highlight gender difference. On the other hand, refusing to make any kind of statement about the issues faced by groups of women as they negotiate their relationships with the political movements, …

Foreign language teachers know the benefits of bringing art into their classrooms. On one hand, works of art are cultural artifacts that convey rich cultural perspectives. Integrating art into the foreign language curriculum facilitates visual learning, providing valuable opportunities to help the students develop visual thinking. Furthermore, art can also be an effective resource to enhance oral and written communication.

El Determinismo En Historia De Una Escalera De Antonio Buero-Vallejo, Victor M. Durán

The Coastal Review

This paper attempts to identify the deterministic traits that are found in Historia de una escalera that Buero-Vallejo masterfully utilizes to suggest that the play is indeed anti-deterministic. The paper identifies and describes salient characteristics of Emile Zola’s (1840-1902) scientific determinism and demonstrates how these characteristics underpin the drama to emphasize the playwright’s theme postulated in Historia de una escalera, that is, life in general is not governed by scientific determinism.

Antonio Ferres (Madrid, 1924), Spanish novelist who began publishing in the 1950s in the period of what has been called “social realism,” wrote Los vencidos in 1960 during a shorter period of about four years referred to as “critical realism,” but the novel was forbidden by the censor during the Franco dictatorship, came out in Italian in 1962 and in Spanish in France in 1965. Re-Inventing Alexander: From Christian Warrior To Pagan Saint, Martha Mary Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

In this essay I examine the appropriation of the Alexander legend by the Spanish author of the Libro de Alexandre to determine to what degree the poet's creation of a new mythic hero successfully fulfills the ideal of the Christian medieval warrior. By examining the poet's attempt at Christianizing the great warrior, I prove that Alexander retains his standing as a mythic figure: one who cannot be contained within a single ideological interpretation.

Composition And Analysis Of Music Using Mathematica, Marianella P. Machado, Christopher W. Kulp, Dirk Schlingman

In this paper we demonstrate how to create and analyze musical compositions using Mathematica. In §1, we begin by demonstrating how to create a musical composition for an orchestra based on the butterfly curve using traditional means. In §2, we then show how a computer generated piece based on any curve can be composed using Mathematica. Finally, in §3, we show how Mathematica can be used to analyze musical compositions using the methods from nonlinear time series analysis.

The last decade has seen the publication of many corpus-based studies about Spanish in Catalonia. With an emphasis on the linguistic characteristics that Spanish in Catalonia maintains or has acquired as a result of its prolonged contact with Catalan, these studies have started to catalog the lexicon, phonology and morphosyntax of Spanish in Catalonia. Relatively little attention has been dedicated, however, to the pragmatics of Spanish in Catalonia, that is, to the discourse strategies that constitute Catalan ways of speaking Spanish. This essay attempts to present a commentary about the notion of paradise in Latin America, as a whole, with a quick review of literature produced in the last 500 years. The image of paradise arises with Columbus' arrival in the Caribbean. In his letters to the Spanish Crown, Columbus creates the myth of paradise in the Caribbean, an image that never existed and, yet, still appears today within Latin American Literature.
