Impact Of Instruction On The Use Of L2 Discourse Markers, Todd A. Hernandez, Eva Rodríguez-González

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

The present investigation compares the acquisition of L2 Spanish discourse markers under explicit and implicit learning conditions. Subjects were fifth-semester Spanish students assigned to an explicit instruction combined with input flood group, an input flood alone group, or a control group. The explicit instruction with input flood group was provided with explicit information about discourse markers. The group then received a flood of written input containing the target forms. Learners were also provided with communicative practice and feedback. The input flood group did not receive explicit instruction on discourse markers. The group received the same flood of input as the …

Leisure And Agrarian Reform: Liberal Governance In The Traveling Museums Of Spanish Misiones Pedagógicas (1931–1933), Eugenia Afinoguénova

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This article examines the program of bringing itinerant art museums to the rural areas implemented by the Misiones Pedagógicas of Spain’s Second Republic. My analysis seeks to answer the following questions: a) Why did the government support these initiatives while peasants were using violence to contest its agrarian reform? b) How did museums fit into the Republic’s program of public education? And 3) how did they treat the peasants' own culture? Tracing the philosophical foundations of the Museo del Pueblo in Manuel Bartolomé de Cosso's (1857–1935) theory of leisure, I discuss Cosso's indebtedness to late-Victorian uses of art education for …

The Relationship Among Motivation, Interaction, And The Development Of Second Language Oral Proficiency In A Study-Abroad Context, Todd A. Hernández Jan 2010

The Relationship Among Motivation, Interaction, And The Development Of Second Language Oral Proficiency In A Study-Abroad Context, Todd A. Hernández

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the role of integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, and interaction with a second language (L2) culture in shaping students’ speaking performance before and after participation in a 1-semester study-abroad program in Spain. A 2-part questionnaire (Student Background Information and Motivation Index), a language contact profile, and a pretest and posttest simulated oral proficiency interview were administered to 20 study-abroad participants. The results highlight 3 major points. First, students can indeed improve their L2 speaking proficiency during a 1-semester study-abroad program. Second, there is a positive relationship between students’ integrative motivation and their interaction …

Promoting Speaking Proficiency Through Motivation And Interaction: The Study Abroad And Classroom Learning Contexts, Todd A. Hernández

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This study investigates how motivation and interaction shape the speaking proficiency of study abroad (SA) and classroom or at home (AH) language learners. The author administered a motivation questionnaire, language contact profile, and pretest and posttest simulated oral proficiency interview. The data reveal that SA and AH students had similar motivational profiles. As expected, SA participants used the target language outside of class more than their AH counterparts. Furthermore, SA students improved their speaking proficiency more than the AH group. Student motivation and interaction were identified as important factors in the development of speaking proficiency in both learning contexts. Results …

Preparing Tomorrow’S World Language Teacher Today: The Case For Seamless Induction, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez, Patricia Davis-Wiley

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena.

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández Jan 2009

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

The role of grammar instruction in promoting communicative competence continues to be a controversial issue for the world language classroom teacher. Second language acquisition research suggests that critical to sustained progress in language use is a focus on form, which we define as attention to linguistic form in the context of performing a communicative task. We therefore offer here four content-enriched strategies for situating grammar in a communicative context: textual enhancement, input flood, structured input, and dictogloss. We present these tasks and activities within the framework of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (SFLL, 2006) to …
