Como Si Fuese Una Memoria, Trasfondo Común En Mausoleo Y Escalada, De Jesús Hilario Tundidor, Almudena Vidorreta

Graduate Student Publications and Research

Publications and Research

Song Of The Outcasts: An Introduction To Flamenco [Book Review], Antoni Pizà Dec 2004

Song Of The Outcasts: An Introduction To Flamenco [Book Review], Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Robin Totton's Song of The Outcasts: An Introduction to Flamenco is actually a judicious, balanced overview of flamenco, its styles, history, and practitioners. And although its author is very passionate about his subject matter, facts and opinions are not blurred or mystified, but rather presented with clarity and concision (in only 224 pages). Totton defines himself as an "explainer by trade" (p. 12), and explain he does. The challenge, though, is to explain verbally an art form that defines itself around the notion of ineffability.

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni Jan 2004

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

By the end of 1915, two inexpensive book series devoted to the diffusion of colonial and nineteenth-century texts flooded the shelves of Argentine bookstores. Their deliberately resonant and all-encompassing names - La Biblioteca Argentina (The Argentine Library) and La Cultura Argentina (Argentine Culture) - were unmistakable signs of their nationalist character and aims. Developed respectively by Ricardo Rojas and José lngenieros, two of the most important intellectuals of Centennial Argentina, the nearly simultaneous launch of both series also underscored the editors' enduring competition to promote their contrasting versions of the nation's political and cultural past. The timing of the series' …

The Sexual Democracy Of Miscegenation: Jossianna Arroyo Examines The Homoerotic Narratives Of The Father Of Racial Democracy, Marcelo Montes Penha

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Investigations of the sexual Other generally attempt to explain sexual practices by characterizing their practitioners as "homosexual" or "gay." Jossianna Arroyo, Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Michigan, went beyond this approach during her March 28 colloquium presentation, "Brazilian Homoerotics: Cultural Subjectivity and Representation in Gilberto Freyre." Arroyo explores not just sexual practices but also the construction of the Brazilian nation through a reading of Gilberto Freyre's two novels, Dona Sinha e o Filho Padre (1964) and O Outro Amor de Dr. Paulo (1977).

Inmigración, Nacionalismo Cultural, Campo Intelectual: El Proyecto Creador De Alberto Gerchunoff, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

Publications and Research

A Descriptive Catalog Of A Collection Of 'Comedias Sueltas' In The Hispanic Society Of America (Volumes I And Ii), Szilvia E. Szmuk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The impetus behind this dissertation was to bring to light 475 individual comedias sueltas bound in 26 volumes and entered under the single subject heading: "Teatro espanol" in the library of the Hispanic Society of America.

Chapbooks were a printers' genre during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries popular throughout Europe and they encompassed all types of literature. This collection of Spanish sueltas consists only of comedias, bailes, and autos, mostly eighteenth-century reprints of Golden Age plays, and contemporary editions of comedias nuevas and sainetes.

The emphasis of this study is on the sueltas as physical objects, i.e., the work constitutes …

The Prose Poem At The Outset Of The Modernist Period In Latin America, Jesse Fernández Jan 1977

The Prose Poem At The Outset Of The Modernist Period In Latin America, Jesse Fernández

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The main purpose of the study is to trace the beginnings of the "prose poem" in the works of the first generation of modernist writers in Latin American letters. The origins of the new literary genre, conceived as such by its authors, go back to the nineteenth century in France, where several writers experimented with a kind of "poetic prose" that was to culminate around the middle of the century in the works of Aloysius Bertrand and Charles Baudelaire.

It became necessary, therefore, to dedicate the entire first chapter to examine the more influential French authors of the period, as …
