Breast cancer is everywhere. The disease has touched the lives of most people. This thesis includes a description of my family's personal breast cancer journey, my grandmother died of the disease at age 42, and my mother was diagnosed at age 53. By sharing our personal story, I hope to provide my children with our history. Another goal in sharing is adding to the public breast cancer narrative. Narratives function to help us make decisions about what we do in our lives and in the lives of others. This study focuses on the intercultural marriages of three women who share Mexican and American cultures. Being a wife of a native Mexican, I proceed to examine the stories of how these three women were able to preserve or merge their cultural identity in the marriage and how they coped with the differences based on the following themes: culture, religion, and traditions. Visual Fantasy Themes In The Ebony Fashion Fair (1963-1965): An Interdisciplinary Study, Brittany Estoria Blanton

Ernest G. Bormann's fantasy theme criticism and the media studies analysis were used to analyze and critique images from the Ebony Fashion Fair from 1963 - 1965. The importance of this fashion show was revealed during a time when the Civil Rights Movement was at its climax. The results concluded that John H. Johnson and Eunice Johnson, founders of Ebony magazine and the , challenged the prevailing social situation with their actions by showcasing positive images and experiences in Black and European communities.

This project is an intertextual study of the theoretical projects of Kenneth Burke and Michel Foucault. It outlines their relationship in terms of points of cohesion and points of departure in their works. The similarities and differences between the projects of Burke and Foucault is described in terms of the relationship between language, knowledge, power, and society, then described in terms of the dichotomy of Reduction and Expansion. This dichotomy gives us a starting point from which to outline the commonalities and differences between these authors' projects. The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield

Alexander Bain's key works are reviewed once again from a rhetorical and historical perspective. Bain was a Scottish empiricist who lived during the Industrial Revolution and contributed to rhetoric, psychology, education, and logic. Bain's emphasis on contiguity, modes of discourse, and grammar are explained. A brief Bain biography is provided along with Bain's interactions with notable friends. Researching Bain again from an interdisciplinary perspective is undertaken to avoid the usual problems with simply repeating prior academic findings and set opinions. However, the way in which Bain was accepted and then discredited is also discussed.

In contemporary politics, campaigns for high office tend to utilize texts that can serve to introduce a politician to the electorate and/or explain their policy positions while also gaining media attention, funds, and votes. This thesis examines this genre of texts, looking specifically at Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope in order to determine if the character of Candidate Obama that is presented in that work is the same as the character of President Obama. The rhetorical concept of ethos is also examined so as to better situate the reader within the literature.

In ancient times, my father's family name is believed to have designated a surveyor, designer, or `measurer' of sailing vessels. For these ancestors, most of whom dwelled on the archipelago of islands just north of the Normandy coast, known today as the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey, the mastery of both seafaring and the building of sea-worthy vessels were matters of survival, not sport. This thesis explores the interdisciplinary nature of travel writing. By focusing on American nonfiction travel writing, this study examines the historical quality of such texts. The validity of narrative nonfiction as a historical tool is addressed. Examples from John Steinbeck's Travel's with Charley and William Least Heat-Moon's Blue Highways, examples are given to show the historical value and social commentary associated with such literature. This thesis is an interdisciplinary work which uses a combination of political science, literature, and rhetoric to form a modern dissoi logoi using the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The thesis itself is broken up into three parts: an introductory preface, and two separate arguments. The first argument uses a rhetorical analysis on its own to examine the rhetoric used by Atticus Finch in his courtroom defense to argue that Atticus's defense was a rhetorical failure, in that it failed to persuade the jurors of his client's innocence and prevent conviction. The central claim is that the charges he lists are perceived criticisms of him and his educational program presented in Plato's Phaedrus. Contemporary society includes many features that impede women's decision-making about infant feeding. The Central Arkansas community is particularly affected by those features. Because informed decision-making involves an acknowledgment of the risks of formula use, breastfeeding advocates must talk about risk. This curriculum offers one way to discuss risks of formula and challenges and supports within the community, to create a supportive environment for making informed decisions, and to commit to a lactation plan, inside a supportive, community-based setting.

In general, Composition I and II are required across the board for every student regardless of academic major. For some students, First-Year Composition (FYC) is the only writing instruction they will receive before making the transition into the workplace. Subsequently, FYC is the opportune time to teach rhetorical strategies and to expose students to the workplace discourses that will be relevant to their professional lives. In an effort to help justify hip-hop as a valid example of rhetoric, this project is an informal investigation of how the hip-hop rhetoric affects perceptions of composition in college freshmen ages 18-24 using a small survey sample of first-year composition students. The resulting data indicates that hip-hop rhetoric does affect the perceptions of composition in hip-hop oriented students, specifically, hip-hop rhetoric's emphasis on ethos, or authenticity, seems to influence those students' assessments of their college compositions in terms of classical rhetorical aims.

In the late winter of 2012, I set out to collect a series of stories from my grandparents, primarily my grandfather. Using a recorder, I collected these stories. I then transcribed them and clarified the text, while adding contextual information. Through these, I've captured the "voice" of Dutch Creek language, as well as the life experiences of a particular individual. In the afterword, I prepared a rhetorical analysis of the situation in the kitchen where the stories were recorded, based on an article by Lloyd F. Bitzer, a theoretician widely acknowledged for his work.

First is examined how young recruits are taught to take charge by using voice commands and command presence. The traditional definition of contrastive rhetoric (CR) emphasizes prescribing and teaching differences in rhetorical patterns. This paper raises questions about traditional CR and analyzes recent developments, which move from differences to similarities in rhetorical patterns, within the context of increasing globalization. Through surveying Chinese-English CR, China's New Culture Movement, and China's New Concept Writing Competition, this paper proposes seven hypotheses with an emphasis on exploring the commonly accepted themes and the possibility of reaching convergence in cross-cultural communication.
