How are learning taxonomies, with a sharper focus on Bloom’s Taxonomy, being used? An adjacent question: How has Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives influenced the development of tools like “Marzano’s Higher-Order Thinking Questions” or “Webb’s Depth of Knowledge”? The ability to produce constructive feedback is an essential skill for writing students that transfers into many careers. However, students do not instinctively know how to structure helpful comments about others’ writing. Training students to construct feedback that is nonjudgmental, specific, and useful is important not only to produce good writers but also to help students succeed in other professions. Historically, Standard American English (SAE) has been seen as superior to African American Vernacular English (AAVE), but both languages can be used interchangeably through the linguistic practice of code-switching. Code-switching pedagogies have been used to more effectively teach elementary students SAE while building on their knowledge of AAVE. Additionally, games have been inserted into the classroom to extend traditional English-language learning, which allows students to embody the language-learning experience in a setting with lower stakes and reduced judgment. At the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), the University Writing Center (UWC) uses an asynchronous emailed-based system for its online writing conferencing. This service has changed little since its original inception. The Blackboard Online Writing Lab (OWL) was developed as a replacement to those services. The Blackboard OWL features both synchronous and asynchronous writing conferences, along with resources such as handouts, videos, slide presentations, and a rich repository of online web tools. This thesis analyzes the elements of printed game manuals so their genre can be seen for its historical value and connection to contemporary game documentation in its many forms. Six manuals are analyzed for their genre elements: contextual, structural, stylistic, and semantic. Each manual was selected based on its related game's popularity for that decade. The analysis found that the genre had a heavy focus on both instruction and immersion. The results of the thesis can be used to refine research on other types of game documentation, because several types either evolved from or replaced the video game manual. The …

Memoir writers are usually survivors of some sort of ordeal, and they may have struggled to overcome race, class, or economic issues just to mention a few issues that may have prompted a memoir. The struggle they faced in the past and the success they have garnered keep them hovering above their pasts. Best Communication Practices For Nontraditional Students In The Rn-Bsn Online Program, Belinda Kaye Nix

Research was conducted to determine the best communication practices for nontraditional students in the RN-BSN online program in hopes of building rapport and ultimately improving retention rates. Data for the research was obtained from an anonymous survey of recent University of Arkansas at Little Rock RN-BSN graduates, one individual interview, and an auto ethnographic approach. The auto ethnographic approach includes my personal accounts of practices in advising RN-BSN students. The results show rapport and connectedness can increase with the use of personalized videos, routine check-ins with students, positive communication, and more transparency.

In 2007, six Sisters of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge in Hot Springs, Arkansas, were excommunicated from the Catholic Church due to their membership in a Canadian-based Marian devotional group called the Army of Mary. Using the style of literary journalism, this thesis tells the nuns’ life stories, from their childhoods and lifetimes of service to the Church through their willful decision to accept excommunication and the status of their lives more than a decade later. This thesis seeks to fill the gap in writing center literature on the topic of group workshops. The researcher gathered 18 workshop agendas, 579 survey responses from workshop attendees, and 14 recordings of workshops to determine what practices workshop presenters were using and what attendees hoped to happen in future workshops. The researcher organized coded findings under the four-step scaffolding framework as described by Nordlof (2014). These findings showed that workshops could be adaptive, interactive, engaging, and applicable similarly to individual tutoring sessions. Recently scholars in Creative Writing have begun researching gender and how gender relates to student success composition classes. This thesis uses critical discourse analysis and linguistic markers associated with different genders to examine student interaction with emphasis on gender domination and power inequalities between students of different genders. Data was collected from both face-to-face and online first-year composition classes. The first chapter gives a brief overview of relevant literature and outlines the other chapters, the second chapter describes literature that was researched for the study, and the third chapter lays critical discourse analysis, which was used to analyze the data. …

This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of the genre of memoir specifically examining the language used to define, describe, and critique the genre, focusing on the ways the language undermines memoir’s generic value. Since the 1990’s memoir has become increasingly popular, but lacks much academic investigation or critique into the conventions of the genre, though it has amassed much criticism. The genre’s rhetorical situation is at odds with general academic standards because inquiry must come before conclusive evaluations. For this thesis, a rhetorical analysis of Theresienstadt, the Jewish hybrid camp and ghetto, was completed by using Kenneth Burke’s pentad. Terministic screens were identified and Burke’s definition of man was examined in relation to the inmates and others involved in key events of Theresienstadt. This analysis was done to determine if Theresienstadt was a tool of propaganda the Nazis used to convince the world mass exterminations of Jews were not being done. This thesis uses oral histories to detail the history of the Center for Writing and Communication [CWAC] at the University of Arkansas- Monticello [UAM], which has gone undocumented since its assumed establishment in the 1980s. While an initial sampling of interview sources conducted in 2013 suggests that the center primarily served as an open computer lab and skills center for much of its lifespan, a more in-depth study suggests that this center evokes the same complexity and uniqueness that surrounds the historical narrative of other writing labs, centers, and clinics across the United States. Although the Lutheran Reformation introduced a radical shift from the traditions of the Catholic Church, the Lutheran reformers had not initially sought to instigate a radical theological or institutional revolution. Especially in comparison with more radical groups within the Protestant movement, Martin Luther and his followers were cautious and slow to cast aside Catholic traditions and generally sought to maintain as much of the Catholic theology and practices as possible. Southern cooking is fluid–ever-changing, influential, and influenced by both Southerners and non-Southerners alike. In this thesis, I explore what constitutes Southern cooking. The foods, cooking methods, and acquisition of foodstuffs and ingredients influence Southerners as cooks and the communities we live in. In the following pages, I’ve connected primary research via interviews with existing literature about Southern foods, cooking, techniques, lifestyles, and cultures. My primary research is derived from authentic interviews with real Southerners. The results from my research are not groundbreaking, but they do serve to help Southerners understand their relationship to and with Southern food and Southern cooking.

This thesis presents a portion of the experiences of Bataan Death March survivors including those of Eddie Graham, my uncle, and Tillman Rutledge, an acquaintance. The event consisted of walking sixty-five miles over a period of six to twelve days without food or water. Throughout the duration of the walk, the prisoners endured inhuman atrocities at the hands of Japanese soldiers. Section two of this document highlights Eddie Graham's experience seventy-one years later while on a Kansas Honor Flight trip to the WWII Memorial, where he and other WWII veterans were honored. Students are entering the first-year composition (FYC) classroom underexposed to multiple genres, multiple potential audiences, and a variety of modalities. Based on survey responses from faculty members across the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), this thesis project seeks to examine effective ways of teaching composition at the UALR to prepare students for upper-level coursework and for their future workplaces. Survey findings indicate that faculty members across the university ask students to respond to writing assignments in a variety of writing genres, address multiple audiences and purposes, and bring certain skill sets into their classrooms. The term “in Christ” is widely recognized within the Christian Church as a signature term of the Apostle Paul. But while the term is recognized as fundamental to his theology, occurring 180 times specifically and 300 times generally, functional usage is minimal. However, when the origin of the term is seen in its original context of the Damascus Road Event Encounter, the unique mystical nature of the term begins to come into focus. There is psychological, historical, and scientific research into the social implications of media and the responsibility of audience. This thesis observed a rhetorical connection between media and the celebrity of high-profile serial killers. The research findings of this analysis began with the 1800s studying literature written in Victorian London with an appreciation for murder eventually leading into the high-profile coverage of the Whitechapel Murders of 1888 committed by history’s still most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. This thesis investigates, as case studies, three little-known scientific concepts, each put forth by a well-known, respected scientist. In each case the concept suggested challenges an established scientific paradigm and, if correct, would significantly alter our current view of the universe. All three concepts seem to be ripe to invoke a paradigm shift yet none has yet occurred.
