The purpose of this study is to compare all the major printings of the texts of "The Book of Abraham" and the "Writings of Joseph Smith," both presently contained in "The Pearl of Great Price", to note the various changes in the texts and to evaluate the significance of those changes.

Philosophy is the quest for wisdom and hence it may share a common end with religion. Not all philosophies are, however, concerned with this end, nor, again are all religions involved with a quest for wisdom. There may be different techniques and tools employed in the accomplishment of wisdom, but this dissertation is concerned only with the study of the nature and use of reason. In the philosophy of Plato reason is employed in diverse fields including mathematics, myths, and elaborate analogies, but when he turns to reason itself, then it becomes important to this analysis. They were intended to be “always in harmony with the theme of the morning sermon,” and to add “color and attractiveness” to the messages delivered to the adults (p. 8).

The sermons were delivered outside Appalachia, but Fischbach has significant ties to the region, so they can be included in the Library.

The problem of this thesis is: What textual relationship does the Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bear to the Bible, King James Version?
As a preliminary hypothesis, it has been assumed that there are phrases and clauses in the Doctrine and Covenants similar enough in construction and meaning to some of the phrases and clauses in the Bible to permit selection of samples from both that will parallel each other. Whether such parallel phrasing, when found, would appear to be a result of quoting, adapting, reiterating, renewing, alluding or simply coincidental construction constituted …

Woods’ clear enunciations, positive interpretations and pointed declarations of rugged Gospel Truth make this volume a valuable asset to anyone’s library.”

Two of the pastors were from Parkersburg; other cities represented include Beckley, Charleston, Fairmont, Grafton, Huntington, Logan, Salem, and West Union.

Altmeyer published his first collection, Sermons Delivered Before Mixed Congregations, in 1911. In the Preface to this volume, Henry A. Brann, Rector of St. Agnes' Church in New York, notes that this one had been printed at the request of many of his fellow clergy. Brann goes on to describe the sermons as "correct...clear, terse, and plain," effectively combining "the study of the dogmatic with the ethical teaching of the church."

His topic is evident from the title; as he says on page 5, Lee “has a place of right in that noble army of the soldiers of Jesus Christ, who have done heroic service for God and for man in their lives.”
