Stories about Canadian Christian churches engaging in civil disobedience by offering sanctuary to refugee claimants have been much in the news the past several years. Typical is the case of Ms. Sanja Pecelji who fled to St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Halifax to avoid a deportation order back to Serbia-Montenegro. The church minister, Rev. Susan Moxley, stated that Ms. Pecelji and her supporters in the church community were determined that she would reside in the church until the government reviewed her application for refugee status. “The tradition of providing sanctuary to those in need is a long-standing one for the …
Teaching Engineering Ethics By Conceptual Design: The Somatic Marker Hypothesis, Brad Kallenberg
Teaching Engineering Ethics By Conceptual Design: The Somatic Marker Hypothesis, Brad Kallenberg
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In 1998, a lead researcher at a Midwestern university submitted as his own a document that had 64 instances of strings of 10 or more words that were identical to a consultant's masters thesis and replicated a data chart, all of whose 16 entries were identical to three and four significant figures. He was fired because his actions were wrong. Curiously, he was completely unable to see that his actions were wrong. This phenomenon is discussed in light of recent advances in neuroscience and used to argue for a change in the standard way engineering ethics is taught. I argue …

Lonergan And Shea On Belief And Knowledge: Positions, Counter-Positions, And Contexts, Dennis M. Doyle

William Shea was my teacher for two academic years at the Catholic University of America, 1978-80. He had a profound influence on me in several ways, one of which was introducing me to the work of Bernard Lonergan. He directed the first major paper I wrote in the field of theology, which later appeared as an article in The Thomist. Sometime shortly after my 1984 dissertation became available, a study that focused on the topic of belief and truth in the works of Lonergan and of Wilfred Cantwell Smith, Shea read it. He gave me a compliment that I …

Wesley’S Methodist Movement: What Might It Have To Offer To Contemporary Roman Catholics?, Dennis M. Doyle
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
What might the 18th century English Methodism connected with John Wesley might have to offer contemporary Roman Catholics? What is the relationship between organizations and movements? What are the possibilities for dual identities and membership? Wesley intentionally envisioned and fashioned the Methodist movement as an ecumenical endeavor. His approach anticipated key points made in Vatican II’s “Decree on Ecumenism.” Although Wesley remained highly critical of Roman Catholicism throughout his life, many of the positions he advocated tended in a “catholic” direction.
There are interesting parallels to be drawn between Wesley’s Methodism and the contemporary movement of A.A. One can …

Suffering And The Search For Wholeness: Beauty And The Cross In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Contemporary Feminist Theologies, Elisabeth T. Vasko
Suffering And The Search For Wholeness: Beauty And The Cross In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Contemporary Feminist Theologies, Elisabeth T. Vasko
Dissertations
The tension between the beauty of the cross and the violence of the crucifixion creates a dissonance within Christian theology. In terms of atonement theologies, this dissonance has been interpreted through the development of a converted sense of beauty in which the cross, as perceived and interpreted by the believer in the context of faith, expands Christian aesthetics. One of the more prominent examples of this construction can be found in the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, wherein divine beauty culminates in Christ's kenotic self-surrender at the cross. In a feminist hermeneutic, the identification of divine beauty with crucified …

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
The last decades of the twentieth century have been a time of new visibility and social activism for Buddhists in Taiwan and around the world. This paper compares the social engagement of nuns in the Chinese Buddhist tradition in Taiwan and North America. I would like to argue that whereas nuns in Taiwan have developed a variety of approaches to social involvement, their counterparts in the Chinese diaspora in North America have had to face a set of challenges specific to overseas Chinese communities in addition to Chinese Buddhist tradition. The article concludes with reflections on the prospects for nuns' …

Being Buddhist, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
When I first encountered the Buddhist teachings, they vastly expanded my evolving ideas about life and helped me to recognize the limitations of my own perceptions. As a child, I suspected that perception was an individual process and that misunderstandings between people were based on different perspectives. Human beings' backgrounds and experiences seemed so diverse; it came as no surprise that they saw the world differently. Buddhist views on perception not only confirmed my suspicions, but also explained in depth the processes involved in human cognition and the ways in which our personal biases and preferences colour our images of …
Docile Bodies: Transnational Research Ethics As Biopolitics, M. Therese Lysaught
Docile Bodies: Transnational Research Ethics As Biopolitics, M. Therese Lysaught
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This essay explores the claim that bioethics has become a mode of biopolitics. It seeks to illuminate one of the myriad of ways that bioethics joins other institutionalized discursive practices in the task of producing, organizing, and managing the bodies—of policing and controlling populations—in order to empower larger institutional agents. The focus of this analysis is the contemporary practice of transnational biomedical research. The analysis is catalyzed by the enormous transformation in the political economy of transnational research that has occurred over the past three decades and the accompanying increase in the numbers of human bodies now subjected to research. …

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander
Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project to promote the development of an incarnational ministry at the Webb Chapel Church of Christ. This intervention employed a team of Webb Chapel opinion leaders representative of various subgroups of the congregation. In the fall of 2008, this group met for eight sessions to discuss the self-emptying practices of Jesus and the need for his followers to emulate those self-emptying practices in their individual lives. Through interaction in the eight sessions, the group developed a model by which self-emptying practices could be implemented at Webb Chapel. Evaluation of the …

Eternal Law: The Underpinnings Of Dharma And Karma In The Justice System, Shiv Narayan Persaud
Eternal Law: The Underpinnings Of Dharma And Karma In The Justice System, Shiv Narayan Persaud
Journal Publications
This article seeks to examine the universal principles of Dharma and Karma as inherent principles within our social system. The hope is to bring about a better understanding of their influences and impact on our justice system by focusing the discussion on the utilization of these concepts by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. in their struggles for justice and equality in two distinct social realities.
