I’d like to reflect briefly on the election of President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joseph Biden in 2008 and their inauguration in January 2009, on the historical significance of the election, and my hopes for cooperation between the Black Catholic community and the Obama Administration in working for social justice. Code Black: A Black Catholic Liberation Bioethics, Shawnee M. Daniels-Sykes S.S.N.D.
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Based on a paper delivered during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Daniels-Sykes, S.S.N.D., proposes that the long history of neglect and abuse suffered by blacks at the hands of the health care industry results from entrenched assumptions fostered by Western philosophies and principles that guide mainstream medical ethics, particularly in light of the 1979 Belmont Report, produced in response to the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study. That the report failed to take into consideration the circumstances of poverty and race, factors key to our understanding those victimized by the Study, underscores the prevailing implicit assumptions of black inferiority. In this article delivered during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Okoye describes several landmarks in African biblical interpretation from the various lenses of race, class, and gender. From the early days of a culturally-sensitive African hermeneutics in the 1960s, to modern popular readings of the Bible, to women’s unique readings of the shades of meaning therein, Okoye focus on the intersection points of biblical and cultural interpretation and the ways a marginalized people have found meaning in the Bible.

The Flames Of Namugongo: Issues Around Theological Narrativity, Heteronormativity, Globalization, And Aids In Africa, Ken Hamilton S.V.D

Hamilton’s paper, delivered during the 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, uses the hagiography of Charles Lwanga and the Martyrs of Uganda to reveal an unrelenting problem of the Church – the ways in which the assumptions of heternormativity and sodomitical discourse drown out the voices of those who do not fall into heteronormative sexual and/or gendered identities, and lead to the open persecution, imprisonment, and torture of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons in Uganda, and in fact all over Africa. This bibliography is a working draft, insofar as no authoritative bibliography of observers (whether as formal periti or informally invited scholars) exists at this time.
An additional difficulty is conclusively to identify particular writers as Protestant Christians. For example, newspaper and other media reporters might have been formally Protestant (whether closely affiliated or distantly related), but did not identify their writings or observations as relevant to or influenced by any Protestant point of view. As a result, this bibliography lists entries whose authors in some sense identified themselves as Protestants, or representing the viewpoints of Protestant churches and organizations.

John Paul Ii And Christian Personalism Vs. Peter Singer And Utilitarianism: Two Radically Opposed Conceptions Of The Nature And Meaning Of Suffering, Peter J. Colosi

Although Christian ethics and contemporary utilitarianism both employ terms such as love and compassion, they are in fact polar opposite ethical views. This fact is not at all easy to discern. One key to perceiving the radical opposition between them lies in clarifying their respective concepts of suffering. In the Christian view, suffering is always understood as the suffering of individual persons, while in utilitarianism suffering is primarily understood as a quantifiable entity detached from the individuals who experience it. The paper attempts a primarily philosophical elucidation of this difference, including some theological points, by taking as its point of …

Angelo Oliva, a brother who was one of the first Vincentians in America, is remembered for his personal qualities and artistic talents. A sculptor and mason, he spent several years constructing the church at the Barrens, which was finished in 1837. Patient and constant, Oliva held himself above the complaints and dissension of the other brothers at the Barrens.

The economic structures of seventeenth-century France, Vincent de Paul’s financial management, and his theory behind it are explained. His financial responsibilities and the sources of income for the Confraternities of Charity, the Congregation, and the Daughters of Charity are enumerated. In general, Vincent viewed money as a resource to be husbanded for the benefit of persons who were poor.

Nineteen sets of short liturgical prayers, honoring Vincent de Paul are presented in Latin and English, accompanied by brief summaries of the texts. They span the time from 1668 to 1973. The prayers cite Vincent’s piety and ministry. They ask for the supplicants to be inspired by and endowed with his virtues, especially his charity, to continue his service. His intercession is also requested. A twentieth Anglican prayer in English is included for completeness. As John Rybolt writes, “What the Church believes about Saint Vincent, lex credendi, shows a shift in emphasis from the earliest official collects to the present.”

Vincent de Paul only pursued art as it was useful for teaching or assisting in the attainment of spiritual goals. John Rybolt describes and analyzes the two engravings in the original edition of the Common Rules. These constitute the title page and the frontispiece, which are reprinted here. Vincent approved these and they summarize the themes of his teachings. Both convey reverence for the Trinity. The title page also highlights the importance of veneration for the Eucharist and devotion to Mary. The frontispiece shows Jesus teaching or healing, and sending his apostles to continue this work.
