Religious Motivation For Mitigating Human-Forced Climate Change: Scientifically Informed, Politically Astute, And Collaborative, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

– Religious organizations are among the non-government groups in the USA that are addressing climate change phenomena from their various faith perspectives and, despite the differences in their traditions and practices, are collaborating with one another to achieve their mutual goal – the establishment of policies that will mitigate the real and anticipated perils scientists are forecasting. If sufficiently motivated by their faith, informed by climate science, and politically astute, these groups may be reliable allies for climate change decision-makers to tap as they strive to achieve their mutual goal. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Where Is Abel Thy Brother? Reframing The Theological Horizons For Catholic Theories Of Just War, Philip J. Rossi Jan 2014

Where Is Abel Thy Brother? Reframing The Theological Horizons For Catholic Theories Of Just War, Philip J. Rossi

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This essay starts from a presupposition that there is need for rethinking the theological framework within which the Catholic Church has articulated its understanding of the principles and the application of the theory of "just war" in the social teaching it has proposed since the conclusion of World War II. While it may also be the case that the articulation of just war principles within other Christian theological traditions needs a similar re-framing, my primary concern is with the place it has occupied within Catholic moral and social teaching for the last sixty years. I will first provide a brief …

Cyprian The Apologist, Philip Palmer Jan 2014

Cyprian The Apologist, Philip Palmer

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Cyprian has not generally been viewed as an apologist of the Patristic era. This study examines whether Cyprian should be considered an apologist under a four-part definition of the term, which coheres with the New Testament uses of apologia and apologeomai and finds expression in the work of the recognized second-century apologists Justin Martyr, Athenagoras, Mathetes, Minucius Felix, and Tertullian. It is argued that Cyprian engaged in an extensive program of apologetics characterized by these same four elements.

The Impact Of A Functional Understanding Of The Image Of God On Mission, Gary Hubbard

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to apply the work of biblical scholars regarding the functional image of God to the mission of the Church in order to argue for a comprehensive understanding of mission. By demonstrating continuity between God's creation purposes for humanity and his post-Fall work among his people, this study will seek to demonstrate that the Lord has always desired that his image bearers participate in the missio Dei. Furthermore, by explaining how Christ restores the imago Dei in the Church, this work will show that the mission of the Church is comprehensive, involving active participation in …

Historical Movements And The Theology Behind The Pluralism Project At Harvard University, Scott Macleod

The focus of this paper is to address religious pluralism as a belief along with examining multiple factors that have been a catalyst for the Pluralism Project at Harvard University to become part of American culture. The theology behind and ideology of the Pluralism Project will be examined along with the writings of Diana Eck, founder of the Pluralism Project. Outwardly, The Pluralism Project and the works of Eck give the impression of an impartial attempt to educate people on the growing religious diversity found within America. My Struggle With Evolution, Kevin Twain Lowery

The author recalls the long, personal struggle he had with accepting evolution, due to the challenges evolution posed for the Fundamentalist Evangelical beliefs he was taught since early childhood. At the end of the essay, the author describes some key ways that evolution impacts traditional Christian theology.
