Reassessing Canonical Attitudes Towards African Marriage Practices Based On A Study Of The African Synod, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

African theologians are virtually unanimous in pointing out that the experience and institution of marriage constitute a special test case for the process of inculturation in the Church in Africa. This article studies the problem as it was dealt with by the African Synod, that is, from the perspective of the Code of Canon Law in relation to extremely important issues such as grounds for nullity, consummation of marriage and marital consent. In the author's opinion the Synod opens the way for further discussion and examination of the issues involved rather than provide practical solutions. The pastoral problem of compatibility …

Several attempts have been made by African theologians to formulate Christological models for African Christianity. In the preceding issue we published a brief survey of these Christological models, pointing out as one of their deficiencies the lack of a pastoral dimension. This article attempts to remedy this deficiency by constructing a Christological ritual based on Guest Christology and the African understanding of guest. We would be interested in hearing from our readers on the applicability and suitability of this liturgical adaptation.

Anglican writers from different centuries, continents, and cultures have shared in approaching the topic of death-in particular, their own death-with clarity, directness, and assurance. Such a topic is obviously not limited to Anglican interest or Anglican commentators, but a willingness to engage it is at the heart of much Anglican spiritual and theological writing. Although it is not my intent to identify a distinctively Anglican approach, I shall draw attention to the prominence of the theme in several Anglican writers, showing how they reflect on it with a faith and assurance that puts it in perspective.

This article concludes a series on theology of William Porcher DuBose which was begun in the December 1990 issue of the St. Luke’s Journal of Theology and continued in the June 1991 issue. DuBose (1836-918) was the second dean of the School of Theology at Sewanee (1894-1908) and a leading Episcopal theologian. This article discusses the convergence of his theological themes in atonement.

This article is a sequel to 'living the Truth: An Introduction to the Theological Method and Witness of William Porcher DuBose' which appeared in the December 1990 issue of the St. Luke’s Journal of Theology. DuBose (1836-1918) was the second dean of the School of Theology (1894-1908) and a leading Episcopal theologian. His primary theological theme was soteriology. This article elucidates that theme.

The gaps in the narratives about the "disciple whom Jesus loved" suggest that he has a typological relationship with the implied readers of the canonical Fourth Gospel. (A) The investigation chiefly focuses on three gaps. (1) The beloved disciple is never named. (2) He is first mentioned (at least as beloved) in the farewell address. The link between the beloved disciple and the farewell address, which is directed to the time of the implied readers by Jesus' prayer in John 17:20-26, is evidence that the implied readers are meant to identify themselves with this ideal disciple.
