Categories used by contemporary environmental philosophers to explore esthetic appreciation for the beauty of the physical world have parallels in reflections by patristic and medieval theologians on the beauty of God's creation, A sampling of the theologians' notions yields a promising foundation for ecological ethics from a theistic perspective, especially when understood from their world view at the time the text was written, reformulated to reflect broad scientific findings about the world today, and worked creatively to identify norms for human behavior.

In this essay I will consider the biblical pneumatology of George T. Montague and C. F. D. Moule relative to three topic areas-the ethic of Christian life as inspired and formed by the Holy Spirit the role of individual and community discernment concerning apparent manifestations of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit as a sign of the "future present" and pledge of the fulfillment of the already begun but not yet completed coming of the kingdom of God. Austin Farrer (1904-1968) was an Oxford don who has been described as "the greatest Anglican thinker of his generation."1 The son of a Baptist minister, he was trained at St. Paul's School, London, and Balliol College, Oxford. After ordination as a priest in the Church of England and brief service in a Yorkshire parish, he returned to Oxford, where he served as chaplain and tutor at St. Edmund Hall from 1931 to 1935, as fellow and chaplain at Trinity College from 1935 until 1960, and as warden of Keble College from 1960 until his untimely death in 1968.
