This article relates Marcella Althaus-Reid’s indecent theology to the novel Caminhos cruzados [crossed paths] by the spiritist medium Mauricio de Castro. In this novel, a homoaffective couple —Sergio and Fabricio— suffer homophobia from society, the implication of defamation, and are victims of prejudice of «sinfulness» and «immorality» because of their homoaffectivity in a committed and stable couple relationship. In analyzing the story of these two protagonists, indecent, «rebellious spirits,» and queer, I apply the Sexual Theology of Liberation method proposed by Althaus-Reid following the Latin American Theology of Liberation: see, judge, act.

In September 2018, in Cordoba, Argentina, citizens witnessed the launching of a campaign in a public transport line with the inscription «#Con mis hijos no te metas.» It was enacted against the Comprehensive Sex Education Law (ESI) and sponsored by the Christian Church Cita con la Vida. This article analyzes the incidence of conservative evangelical churches in local politics based on this campaign in public. It concludes that in the religious field, conservative evangelical churches dispute the monopoly of the Roman Catholic Church —primarily political and social power— through the use of public space.

Except for South Africa, sub-Saharan African countries criminalize same-sex relationships, although the call for acceptance increases. The «pro» and the «anti» -same-sex relationships camps use the Bible. However, investigating the texts shows a selective use of the Bible to entrench one’s already accepted position. The questions addressed in this article are: do Africans resist same-sex relationships purely based on the teaching of the Bible, or are there other factors at play? On the African continent the argument that homosexuality is un-African is often used in tandem with the claim that the Bible unambiguously condemns homosexuality. This article suggests that the link between the un-African and unambiguous positions largely depends on hard-core heteronormative positions informed by debilitating homophobia. Amidst a seeming impasse in debates, biblical hermeneutics which includes attention for ancient and modern contexts, moves beyond selective texts and incorporates recent research on human sexuality and can contribute towards debunking Bible-based, culturally-ensconced homophobia in Africa.

Placing God: Defining “Post-Christianity” For Contemporary Japanese Christians, Leryan Anthony Burrey

This work suggests that we consider a new, working definition of post-Christianity. This new paradigm is in response to Western Christian thought being too dominant a force that fails to take into enough account other global experiences— like those of Japanese Christians. These reflections are based on scholarly opinions claiming that Christianity is a “global culture,” and ultimately argues for more international inclusivity in Western Christian thought and institutions, especially regarding the Asia-Pacific. Asian Christian spirituality is often viewed through the lens of western theology, which is often grounded in biblical literalism. Within this literalist faith, spirituality becomes a mimicry of dogma. Hence, spiritual experiences are usually only allowed within existing theological perimeters. This essay invites readers to journey beyond their circumscribed faith and meet the Christ who had transcended his physical limitations into the luminous glory of liberating life. This article outlines some interpretive and analytical clues that discuss the relationship between African-based religions and sexual and gender classifications in their doctrinal body. It mainly focuses on the performance of ritual manifestations. My election of Kimbanda rituals relies on the manifestations of Pomba Gira. This spiritual entity appears in the archetype of a sensual and powerful woman who, in her earthly life, was a prostitute. During the rituals, she becomes a queen. It concludes that African-based religions involve different ways of being and inhabiting the world, both material and spiritual. That characteristic allows for the bending of gender/sexual norms …

Queering Pentecost(Alism): Advocating For Inclusion Of Affirming Pentecostal Congregations, Telaireus Herrin

Modern understandings and constructions of sexuality challenge the heteronormative hegemony of most Christian denominations. Pentecostalism faces similar challenges. For LGBTIQ+ Christians, affirmative congregations have been places of refuge to counter destructive doctrines and teachings related to sexuality, marriage, membership, and participation in the church. The taxonomy of Pentecostalism typically includes four movements within Pentecostalism. I postulate a fifth type of Pentecostalism —Affirmative Pentecostal Congregations— which disrupts and dismantles exclusive constructions of sexuality and affirms an inclusive faith.

Traditionally, Roman Catholicism has postulated that Jesus was a man who chose men to follow his mission as priests and that women cannot symbolically represent the masculinity of the messiah. Latin American Liberation Theology took the pattern of women’s work in communities to develop its way of theologizing. Women practiced this type of theology mainly for reasons of political exclusion. Due to this, the article explores the theology of women around the issues of female ordination, taking into account its methods based on participatory principles where people occupy the first place.

La Homosexualidad Y La Biblia: Practicando Textos Seguros, Robert Shore-Goss

This article addresses the interpretations of Biblical texts used against queer believers. Commonly known as «texts of terror,» they have been cited as God-given prohibitions of same-sex relationships. The analysis uncovers the bias and the various representations of gender and sexuality in the Ancient Near East and the Greco-Roman contexts. Drawing from extensive scholarly work featuring contemporary hermeneutics the article challenges the thesis that same-sex relationships are the point of prohibitions. It concludes that the background of Ancient Near East and Greco-Roman worldview do not allow for anachronistic extrapolations of contemporary notions of gender and sexuality into the heart of …

This third issue of the Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Queer Theologies focuses on advancing both the state of the art of queer theories, theologies, and pastorals, as well as the possibilities of future perspectives. The importance of the "religious" in the contributions of this issue bases on the need to connect with elements that make up everyday life - spirituality, rituals, practices, discourses, among others - that are often "excluded" from the discussions about what is queer in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Church On The March: Sexual And Gender Dissidents In The Struggle For Embodied Political Rights, Ana Ester Pádua Freire

The relations between Christianity, sexual/gender dissidents, and civil rights of LGBTIQ+ people constitute an essential field of analysis considering Brazilian religious conservatism’s upsurge. The tensions evoked by these political actors within the public space reveal art as a mechanism for sexual /gender dissidents' visibility. Artivism —perceived as political liturgy— subverts precarity. This article investigates the Metropolitan Community Church of Belo Horizonte’s participation in the «III March against LGBTphobia» in Minas Gerais in 2016. The public presence of an affirming Christian community reveals that religious and political artivism reconfigures the public space.

This article revisits Latin American Liberation Theology’s «option for the poor» in light of Marcella Althaus-Reid’s theological contribution. Queer Theory and Queer Theologies have helped to critique the idealised «poor» and «option for the poor» in much of Latin American Liberation Theology. This article takes on board those critiques, but in turn it asks if Queer Theory and Queer Theologies more widely ought to include and «option for the poor» in their own methodologies.

This article focuses on the contributions and challenges that queer theology offers to the theological world. However, it also addresses particular theological-pastoral reflection beyond the specificity of queer theologies. The article presents three aspects of queer theologies that I recognize as essential to all theological reflection. The second section develops in what sense queer theologies constitute a contribution to the «liberation of theology.» The last section points out pastoral challenges by focusing on rethinking the concept of «inclusion» as a challenge of what means to «queer» theology.

This article seeks to denounce the heteronormative model’s inconsistencies and inequalities from the perspective of queer theologies. Using the tools proposed by queer theory, these theologies seek to promote liberation so that people of sexual and gender diversity who profess a faith can be-and-stay-in-the-world in a visible and respected way. Queer theologies challenge normative structures and discourses that seek to close identities in their multiple aspects within the religious field. Thus, they help us deconstruct heteropatriarchal normative theology until that deconstruction also allows us to speak of a queer God.

An Indecent Pedagogy: Marcella Althaus-Reid Leading Theology Out Of The Closet Through Indecent Theology, Elizabeth Ingenthron

Through Indecent Theology, Marcella Althaus-Reid contributed to liberation through education or pedagogy as a «leading out.» Because of the way that Althaus-Reid leads us out of the closet of oppressive social and theological frameworks, this article argues that her work is simultaneously theological and pedagogical. Paulo Freire’s notions on pedagogy provide an apt theoretical framework for the analysis. Reading Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology through Freire’s work provides a re-contextualized understanding of his pedagogical theory. Thus, allowing the liberatory theological and pedagogical praxis of Indecent Theology to emerge.
