Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The potential of advanced scientific techniques for giving us new information about ancient history has sometimes been overhyped, yet real advantages are becoming apparent. Interestingly, however, the findings are more likely to produce fascinating and useful new questions than to settle old ones neatly.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a new video discussion on the ancient prophet Abinadi, Todd Parker, associate professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU, presents an informal discussion on the trial of Abinadi before wicked King Noah's court of priests. Parker's wide-ranging and eclectic presentation summarizes information on Abinadi's trial for blasphemy and false prophecy, the courageous way he delivered God's message of repentance to the wicked Nephite priests, and the masterful way he taught the priests the correct interpretation of the law of Moses. Since 1830, millions of people have read the Book of Mormon and have been convinced that Joseph Smith's account of its origins is correct-that it is an ancient document given to him for a season by a divine messenger to translate by the gift and power of God. Critics, however, have argued that the book must be a fraud.

Unintentional Sin In Benjamin's Discourse
Unintentional Sin In Benjamin's Discourse
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In explaining the atonement of Jesus Christ, King Benjamin pointedly states that in addition to atoning for the fall of Adam, "his blood atoneth for the sins of those .. . who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned" (Mosiah 3:11). For modern readers, the notion of sinning unintentionally may seem illogical. Isn't sin a conscious violation of a commandment of God? If someone transgresses a law of God in ignorance, is there any guilt or culpability that calls for repentance?

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Review of Books on the Book of Mormon, published by FARMS since 1989, has attempted to assist students of the Book of Mormon by reviewing every significant publication about the Book of Mormon published each year. While that commitment remains unchanged, the focus of the reviews published in the last several issues has expanded to match the expanding interests of FARMS - first, the Book of Mormon, and then other ancient scripture and related topics; thus the name of the Review has been changed to the FARMS Review of Books to more accurately reflect this expanded focus.

Projects described in the November 1980 newsletter continue, meanwhile here we spotlight another challenging research activity. It's already ingested the modern and 1830 texts of the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the King James version of the Bible, thanks to the cooperation of …

One of the papers offered in this issues' Reprint Series is "Pre-Columbian Old World Coins in America: An Examination of the Evidence, '' by Jeremiah F. Epstein (Current Anthropology 21 [Feb. 1980]: 1-20). Epstein surveys the field of Old World coins dating to pre-Columbian times that have been found in the United States, particularly within the last three decades, to determine how seriously such items should be taken. If valid, the existence of such coins would obviously be a powerful argument for diffusionists.

Recent research has yielded another interesting clue about the language of the Nephites and about the manner in which it was translated into English. By comparing the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon to the subsequent printed versions, Royal Skousen has found that the original English-language text of the Book of Mormon contained expressions that are uncharacteristic of English. One such expression is a Hebrew-like conditional clause.
