The Good Samaritan: A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation, John W. Welch Apr 1999

The Good Samaritan: A Type And Shadow Of The Plan Of Salvation, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

Before modernity, Christians read this parable allegorically, with the Samaritan, for example, aptly typifying Christ. Such a reading becomes even stronger when enriched by the full plan of salvation.

Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay Jan 1999

Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay

Maxwell Institute Publications

Introduction

John W. Welch

In 1978, my colleagues and I completed our work on Chiasmus in Antiquity, which was published in 1981 by Gerstenberg Verlag in Hildesheim, Germany. That volume contained a bibliography generated mainly by Robert F. Smith. Over the past two decades, I have continued to collect bibliographical information on numerous books and articles that either speak about or make use of chiasmus. Those additional sources have been included here, expanding the earlier bibliography, in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. These items are presented alphabetically by author, and again in four main categories. Brief annotations …

Romans 1: Notes And Reflections, James E. Faulconer Jan 1999

Romans 1: Notes And Reflections, James E. Faulconer

Maxwell Institute Publications

The book of Romans can be difficult to understand, and it is used more than any other biblical book to challenge LDS doctrine. “When we understand Romans, it is obvious that not only need we not fear having others discuss Paul’s teachings, but we can use those very teachings to teach the truthfulness of the gospel understood through latter-day revelation.”

In commenting on Romans 1 verse by verse, author James E. Faulconer touches on such topics as faith, holiness, obedience, service to Christ, personal conversion and repentance, and becoming true saints. Romans 1: Notes and Reflections can be a valuable …

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 1999

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Temple in Time and Eternity, edited by Donald W. Parry and Stephen D. Ricks, is the second volume in the series Temples Through The Ages. The importance of the temple to a religious community of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean world can scarcely be exaggerated. The eleven articles in this volume are divided topically into three sections: “Temple in Ritual,” “Temples in the Israelite Tradition,” and “Temples in the Non-Israelite Tradition.”

The “Temple in Ritual” section features Hugh Nibley’s discussion on “Abraham’s Temple Drama,” which identifies elements of the creation drama that appear in the book of …

Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch Jan 1999

Illuminating The Sermon At The Temple And Sermon On The Mount, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

Understanding the Sermon on the Mount (meaning both texts in their shared, collective meaning) as a temple text reveals that it has far more power and unity than a mere collection of miscellaneous sayings of Jesus. John W. Welch examines the teachings and commandments of the Sermon on the Mount in its Book of Mormon setting—at the Nephite temple, in connection with sacred ordinances of covenant making. This context opens new insights into the meaning and significance of the Sermon whereby readers never again see the Sermon the same.

Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple & Sermon on the Mount …

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock Jan 1999

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock

Maxwell Institute Publications

One important and fruitful area of Book of Mormon studies has focused on ancient Hebrew literary forms present in the text. After years of studying these fascinating forms, Hugh W. Pinnock offers his perspective on their beauty, function, and background. By design this book offers a basic working knowledge of only some of the ancient literary forms identified in the Book of Mormon. Together they represent a significant percentage of the types of ancient forms drawn upon by the Nephite prophets.

The author explains that knowledge of ancient Hebrew writing forms and Jewish poetry is incomplete even today, and much …

Confessions Of A Chameleon, 1983-1991, Edward A. Geary Jan 1999

Confessions Of A Chameleon, 1983-1991, Edward A. Geary

BYU Studies

John Keats coined the term "negative capability" to describe a poet's ability to present his or her material objectively and impersonally. The poet with negative capability, Keats declared, "has no character" and takes "as much delight in conceiving an Iago as an Imogen. What shocks the virtuous philosopher, delights the camelion Poet." Negative capability is probably an optional quality for poets, but it is almost essential for editors—except, of course, those few who deliberately make their publications a sounding board for their own opinions. For the most part, an editor's job is to make other people look good. To the …

The Founding Vision Of Byu Studies, 1959-1967, Clinton F. Larson Jan 1999

The Founding Vision Of Byu Studies, 1959-1967, Clinton F. Larson

BYU Studies

Time is a little consequence when an Event is near. In a rush and emphasis of time, three of us stood in a field to the north of Temple Hill. Darrel Taylor said, "I want to establish a language training center for missionaries of the Church. I want it to be part of the department of foreign languages so that the beauties of the languages can be seen with the Truth that is in them." And I thought of the possibility of a magazine for the university, as it might e, drawing its breath from the influence of ages past, …

Byu Studies From 1967 To 1983, Charles D. Tate Jr. Jan 1999

Byu Studies From 1967 To 1983, Charles D. Tate Jr.

BYU Studies

In my editorial in the first issue of BYU Studies that I edited, I noted that from its inception the journal was to be a "Voice for the Community of LDS Scholars." Since there are enough scholarly journals that will publish secular scholarly studies by LDS authors, BYU Studies was distinctively to be the journal in which faithful Latter-day Saint scholars could publish articles that explored the correlation of their secular studies and their religious convictions. As most of the rest of the world does not believe in modern revelation as a viable medium of scholarly information, none of the …

Off On The Right Foot, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

When I was appointed editor of BYU Studies in 1991, I was keenly aware of the sterling, scholarly reputation that this journal had won for itself since its inception in 1959. My hope was to build on that solid foundation, which had been put clearly in place right from the journal's earliest days.
