Members of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors continue to be on the move. Stephen Ricks was recently appointed to a three-year term as Associate Dean of General and Honors Education at BYU. He continues as the Chairman of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors and as Acting President during Noel Reynolds's academic year as Scholar in Residence at the BYU Jerusalem Center. Despite the distance, Noel has been in close contact with the board, especially in making arrangements for research in the Middle East.

Nibley Repudiates Bogus Article
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
An article with Hugh Nibley's name on it, but not written by him, has apparently been circulating in various parts of Utah and elsewhere. It is entitled "The Earth's Temporal Existence." Because Nibley and F.A.R.M.S. receive numerous inquiries about the authenticity of the article, he has allowed us to publish the following statement. In Nibley's inimitable style, it makes clear his attitude to the article and the fuss it has created.

Professor Norman Golb, Rev. Joseph Fitzmyer, and Professor Stephen Ricks discussed the Dead Sea Scrolls to a sold-out audience at Stanford University on November 20. A complete video of the conference, together with an interview with Hugh Nibley, is available on the order form.
Eyewitness Accounts Give Historical Background On The D&C
Eyewitness Accounts Give Historical Background On The D&C
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Unlike other books of scripture, the Doctrine and Covenants contains very little historical narrative. The teachings in scripture take on added meaning as they are seen in the context of the needs and experiences of God's people at the time. For the Doctrine and Covenants, more than for the other books of scripture, we must turn to outside sources for insights from the historical background.

Vikings, Iron, And The Book Of Mormon, William J. Hamblin
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The question of the relationship between Mesoamerican archaeology and descriptions of the use of iron and other metals in the Book of Mormon is a complex one. The Jaredites, Nephites, and Mulekites came from the ancient Near East, where metallurgy was a widespread, integral part of civilization. There is evidence from the Book of Mormon that some elements of Near Eastern metallurgical technology were brought to the New World.
New Evidence About Book Of Mormon Scribes
New Evidence About Book Of Mormon Scribes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A copy of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon was made by Oliver Cowdery and two other scribes. This copy is called the printer's manuscript, since it was the one normally used to set the type for the first edition. Oliver Cowdery transcribed about 85% of the copy. Most of the remainder is in the second scribe's hand, with only a few pages by the third scribe, apparently in relief for the second scribe. The third scribe has been identified as Hyrum Smith by Dean Jessee. Until now the second scribe has been unidentified, but new evidence suggests …

In September, Truman G. Madsen, professor emeritus of Philosophy at BYU, spoke at a F.A.R.M.S.-sponsored fireside in the San Francisco area. More than a thousand people attended, including long-time friends of the Foundation and many who had never encountered F.A.R.M.S. before. We wish to thank Doctor Madsen for participating in this and other F.A.R.M.S. events as part of our effort to spread word of Book of Mormon research and the work of the Foundation. We also thank all who helped to make this and other recent firesides so successful. We are interested in holding additional firesides as interest and travel …

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Stephen D. Ricks, chairman of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors, is recovering nicely after undergoing brain surgery in Vienna to remove blood clots that had caused a stroke. The clots apparently originated in some deep bruising in his shoulder he received in a car accident. We appreciate the many expressions of concern and the prayer and fasting in Stephen's behalf, and we join with you in seeking the Lord's blessings for a complete and speedy recovery

The "Decapitation" Of Shiz, Gary M. Hadfield, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Ether 15:29-32 describes the gory end of the last Jaredite battle. Exhausted, Coriantumr propped himself up with his own sword, gathered his last ounce of strength, and "smote off the head of Shiz," his arch-rival who had fainted beside him from the loss of blood. The smitten Shiz then "raised upon his hands and fell; and after that he had struggled for breath, he died," and Coriantumr himself collapsed.

More than 300 people attended this year's F.A.R.M.S. banquet, held on October 13 at BYU. Noel Reynolds, F.A.R.M.S. president, gave a review of the past year and reported on plans for the future, and Kent Wallace received an award as the F.A.R.M.S. volunteer of the year for 1994. The members of the board of directors of the Foundation consider very valuable every opportunity to associate with and learn from some of the many individuals who provide invaluable support to F.A.R.M.S., and this gathering was no exception.

The Symbolism Of Eating And Drinking In The Book Of Mormon Is Explored
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a recent article published in the latest issue of BYU Studies, Richard D. Rust of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discusses images of eating and drinking (and the lack thereof) from the Book of Mormon and the ways in which these images are used to "define the essential nature of people, emphasize problems of survival, illustrate degradation, characterize social relationships, reinforce covenants, poetically define a hope for eternal life, and suggest a response to the book as a whole."

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
At the annual CES symposium at BYU, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, newly called member of the Quorum of the Twelve of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, highlighted several themes in the Book of Mormon and bore testimony of its truthfulness. He also spoke of his calling and of his experiences with President Hunter. Since many of our readers are seminary and institute teachers who were not able to attend the symposium, a transcript of this powerful address is available by using the order form in this issue of the F.A.R.M.S. newsletter.
Was There Leprosy Among The Nephites?, John L. Sorenson
Was There Leprosy Among The Nephites?, John L. Sorenson
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Speaking to the Nephites assembled at the temple in Bountiful, the risen Jesus Christ said, "Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous ... ? Bring them hither and I will heal them " (3 Nephi 17:7). Yet medical researchers do not believe that "leprosy" existed in ancient America. How can we resolve this apparent conflict between what the Book of Mormon describes and what modern researchers have concluded?

New Book Describes Efforts To Trace Lehi's Trail
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
No one has done as much to advance our understanding of Lehi's journey as have F.A.R.M.S. workers Warren and Michaela Aston. For more than a decade they have expended time, money, and great effort in searching the remote valleys and deserts of the Arabian peninsula for candidates for locations mentioned and described in the Book of Mormon. Now a very personal and moving account of their efforts has been published by Deseret Book, In the Footsteps of Lehi: New Evidence for Lehi's Journey across Arabia to Bountiful.
