“How Can We Sing In A Strange Land?” The Pastoral Musician As A Master Griot/Griotte, Dollie Howell May 2025

“How Can We Sing In A Strange Land?” The Pastoral Musician As A Master Griot/Griotte, Dollie Howell

Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses

The writer of Psalm 137 asks a question that poignantly resonates with the experiences of enslaved Africans who were taken captive, exiled from their homelands, and told to forget their languages, worship practices, and tribal traditions. Their dehumanization was intensified by expectations that “required a song and . . . mirth.” The question was “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” In response to this question of engaging in song as a community while in a strange land of deep and persistent systemic suffering, enslaved African-descended people founded a unique tradition within Christianity that responded to …

Let’S Tell Them: The Importance Of Christian Storytelling To The Secular Mind, Tiago Rossendy May 2025

Let’S Tell Them: The Importance Of Christian Storytelling To The Secular Mind, Tiago Rossendy

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Christian storytelling is pivotal in shaping individual perspectives and nurturing a biblical worldview, particularly among the younger generation. Sharing personal and biblical narratives can bridge the gap between secular minds and faith. There is a need to convey to the new generation the deeds of the Lord, what He has done for His people, and how He continues to work in our lives. Providing an overview of these experiences through storytelling has the power to capture the attention and interest of the secular mind, leading them towards eternal truths. In this process, a person committed to God must be the …

The Securing Of Divine Attachment: The Role Of Intergenerational Sharing In Attachment-Oriented Discipleship In Youth Ministry, Kristina Freed

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Divine attachment styles, whether secure or insecure, are strongly influenced by intergenerational interactions and attachments. This paper considers the role of multiple generations on faith transmission with a view toward fostering and securing divine attachment in a way that leads to increased participation in vertical and horizontal discipleship relationships and activities. Specifically addressed are the significance of certain applications of theology and psychology to attachment processes, and how attachment styles and relationships influence faith development. Suggestions for fostering intergenerational ministry within the context of divine attachment relationships are made

Creating A Trauma-Informed Youth Ministry, Rodney Palmer

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Trauma is an event or experience that surpasses an individual’s coping capacity, often manifesting in response to various situations such as abuse, neglect, violence, natural disasters, or loss. Consequently, it is vital to provide a safe and supportive environment for youth who have experienced such trauma. This article provides a guide on creating a safe space, emphasizing key elements such as being welcoming and non-judgmental, using positive language, setting clear boundaries, promoting autonomy, addressing triggers, and fostering healthy relationships. …

The Need For A Grounded Faith And A Transcendent Sky: Philosophy As A Tool For Youth And Young Adult Ministry, Amalia Goulbourne May 2025

The Need For A Grounded Faith And A Transcendent Sky: Philosophy As A Tool For Youth And Young Adult Ministry, Amalia Goulbourne

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Many youth and young adults lack a deeply spiritual faith in a church that focuses on moral goodness, institutional commitment, and a belief in transcendence from a secular world. They ask questions about their identity, purpose, and belonging. Philosophy provides a stable framework for youth and young adults to learn how to engage in questioning, grow a deeply rooted faith from which to live life, learn the history of past and present philosophies, and explore the limits of a secular worldview.

The Missing Culture: A Look Into Intentionally Intergenerational Church Culture In Light Of Youth In The Current Generational Cultures Of The United States, Jason Canfield

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

As the church wrestles with reaching and retaining the youth and young adults of today, should the focus be on entertaining their interests or disciplining them? If the goal is discipleship, then an understanding of the generations and how bringing them intentionally together (intergenerational) as a core value of the church culture should be explored. Recognizing each generation’s unique culture and preferences and how those differences can make us stronger together as a united body of Christ is the aim of this article.

Losing My Religion: Young Adults And The Impact And Implications Of Secularism On Their Religion, Lyle Notice May 2025

Losing My Religion: Young Adults And The Impact And Implications Of Secularism On Their Religion, Lyle Notice

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Young adults in North America are less religious and consider themselves unaffiliated with organized religion. There is a stark difference between Millennials and Baby Boomers within the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church when it comes to religious beliefs, behavior, and affiliation. The older generation is holding on to religious beliefs while Millennials slowly and quietly drift away from the church and religious ideology. As Millennials move away from religious institutions and take on more secular ideology, it would appear that there are specific reasons for the mass exodus of young adults from church. This paper seeks to discuss the challenges facing …

By doing so, it aims to facilitate a deeper comprehension of cultural dynamics and their implications. Additionally, it seeks to underscore the significance of leveraging cultural insights as a means to engage with youth effectively, comprehend their milieu, and offer meaningful assistance within the cultural milieu they navigate.

Emotions And Human Flourishing, Kayla Goodman

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

This paper addresses the intricate relationship between emotions and human flourishing, aiming to provide a more structured understanding of how emotional experiences shape and contribute to overall well-being. This is a vital tool in working with youth and young adults because it addresses a key element of this life stage. Emotions are integral aspects of the human experience and influence how people act as well as the extent of which emotional connection and vulnerability can be shared with each other. This also shapes the community experience of doing life with others.

The New Orphan? Ministry In K-12 Public Schools, Nelson Silva May 2025

The New Orphan? Ministry In K-12 Public Schools, Nelson Silva

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

As churches struggle with identity and declining members in an increasingly hyper-individualistic and pluralistic society, mission must be carefully reconsidered to bring about adaptive change. Public schools position themselves as a natural place to mingle with the people of the community. However, many churches’ missiological posture of attraction rather than immersion, in addition to the misinterpretation of how church and state should relate, keeps ministry away from the heart of the community. The 180° Symposium in 2017 identified “The New Orphan” as Youth Sabbath School. This metaphor now applies to elementary and secondary public schools. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has …

The Efficacy Of A Culturally Sensitive Apologetic On University Campuses, Darrel Lindensmith May 2025

The Efficacy Of A Culturally Sensitive Apologetic On University Campuses, Darrel Lindensmith

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The secular shift in modern culture calls for a corresponding communication of the Gospel to university students. Many young adults have shifted from an underlining assumption of Biblical theism toward naturalistic narratives. This calls us to address the epistemology of that scientism by looking deeper at its own assumptions if we are to help students meet the reality of God in their lives. Students on college and university campuses normally do not have knowledge or ready access to professional research highlighting evidence of intelligent design in biology and cosmology, nor evidence of God in prophecy and the resurrection of Christ. …

The Three Angels’ Messages And The Seventh-Day Sabbath: Antidotes To The 1844 Theological Divide Of Neo-Darwinism, Karl Marx, And Frederick Nietzsche, Ron Reece

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The “Great Disappointment” of October 22, 1844, left a group of believers wondering what did happen in 1844. This seminal time period in world history was also defined by the scientific and philosophical ideas of Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Frederick Nietzsche that challenged God’s grace and redemption at (1) creation; (2) Mt. Sinai; and (3) Calvary. The Three Angels’ Messages and the seventh-day Sabbath are Christ’s antidote to awaken humanity from this confused and deceived state of reality. They also address the secular philosophies of Neo-Darwinism, Marx, and Nietzsche. Seventh-day Adventists need to embrace a new understanding of 1844 …

Secular Sunset And Spiritual Sunrise: The Rise And Demise Of Secularism And The Rise Of The Spiritual, Steve Case

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Christians too often seem worried, overwhelmed, or defeated by secularism and its influence. Because of the reality of God and his actions, secularism is destined to die. Already it has shown indications of losing its grip and sometimes being irrelevant, as evidenced by pendulum swings, life changes, and even imploding on itself. Instead of maintaining a narrow gaze on the secular, focus on the realities of the transcendent God who continues to be present and active in this world. Reaffirm God’s sovereignty, as evidenced in Scripture and more recently, including our own day. Proclaim and join Christ’s kingdom that is …

Faith Deconstruction: The Challenge Of Answering The Questions Affecting The Faith Of Young People, Rogelio Paquini May 2025

Faith Deconstruction: The Challenge Of Answering The Questions Affecting The Faith Of Young People, Rogelio Paquini

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

A significant trend, faith deconstruction, has recently been popularized among young believers affecting youth ministry. This occurrence has gained noteworthy attention as many young Christians, including Adventist and non-Adventist individuals, have begun questioning and deconstructing their faith. Pastors across various denominations have responded by preaching sermon series dedicated to faith deconstruction. As the sources of information on religious beliefs become more diverse, faith deconstruction challenges traditional conceptions of faith formation and spiritual development. Many young Christians, influenced by countless factors, including access to information, changing societal values, and exposure to diverse perspectives, are grappling with doubt and seeking to reconcile …

Faith Formation And Discipling For Metamoderns, Kenley Hall May 2025

Faith Formation And Discipling For Metamoderns, Kenley Hall

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

What does the future of faith formation and discipling look like for “Metamoderns” with their cultural logic of toggling, which presents both a challenge and opportunity to the corporate and the local church? The unique cultural logic of Metamodernism has the potential not to weaken faith but rather create a deeper faith than that seen in previous generations and will suggest how the church can create a space for that faith to develop. Metamodernistic spirituality is still in its nascent formation. Depending on how the church, corporately and locally, responds on both levels will either lead Metamoderns into a deeper …

Religious Scrupulosity: The Law And The Gospel, Robert J. Chester Apr 2025

Religious Scrupulosity: The Law And The Gospel, Robert J. Chester

Senior Honors Theses

The clear distinction of the law and gospel for the salvation and justification of an individual, highly affects the minds, beliefs, and lives of those who suffer from religious scrupulosity. Religious scrupulosity is known as obsessional fears of thinking or behaving immorally against one’s religious beliefs. Religious scrupulosity affects many in the church, and is a form of obsessive/compulsive thought that can form due to improper emphasis of gospel truth. The way the church preaches and emphasizes certain points of the gospel can change the perception and understanding of many people in the world. The evident distinction between law and …

Davis, Jr., John F. “Following the Mission Leader: The Value of Imitational Learning in the Training of Apostolic Church Planting Teams at Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy, TX.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2025. pp. 272

Reaching the unchurched and unbaptized in our communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a huge challenge for most of our churches. In The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, the number of adults being baptized in the churches (a measure of our effectiveness in carrying out the Missio Dei) is less than one per year. To reach people who have no …

Theopoetics Prothesis: An Exploration In Faith And Form, Elise Aleman, Elise Aleman Jan 2025

Theopoetics Prothesis: An Exploration In Faith And Form, Elise Aleman, Elise Aleman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My work is rooted in the biblical definition of faith: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Like the Bible’s layered complexity—its patterns, metaphors, and cultural references—faith is not merely intellectual but an active trust in what is unseen. It transcends knowledge, anchoring itself in conviction and hope. This intersection of theology and lived experience is at the core of my practice.

Theopoetics—a framework that fuses theology and artistic expression—shapes my approach, allowing faith to be embodied through form rather than merely explained. Two seemingly distinct bodies of work—one centered …

Exploring Undergraduate Understanding And Learning Of Catholic Social Teaching In Catholic Higher Education, Kenny Van Tilburg Jan 2025

Exploring Undergraduate Understanding And Learning Of Catholic Social Teaching In Catholic Higher Education, Kenny Van Tilburg

Dissertations

Since the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s, Catholic higher education (CHE) has wrestled with its Catholic identity in a changing landscape and changing world (Gallin, 1996, 2000; Gleason, 1995; Morey & Piderit, 2006). A big component of this identity-recognition process is the continued evolution and inclusion of Catholic social teaching (CST) in the educational approach of CHE. Despite its importance, much evidence has suggested CST is underwhelmingly present in the education of contemporary CHE (Beyer, 2021; Galligan-Stierle, 2014; Hudson et al., 2018; Nickerson & Dammer, 2018; Reed-Bouley, 2016; Sullivan & Pagnucco, 2014; United States Conference of Catholic Bishops [USCCB], …

Repurposing The Land Of An East Los Angeles Church: The Discovery Of How Small And Medium Sized Churches Through Affordable Housing Can Combat Homelessness While Revitalizing Its Nonprofit Status, Donald Cook, Donald Ray Cook Ii

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

In order to live, humans need to sleep; therefore, sleep is mandatory, but unfortunately, everyone does not have the option of sleeping inside. Subsequently, many homeless encampments have developed in many countries. The perspective that people have often determines their response to homelessness. One person might view a homeless encampment as a problem that needs to be removed while someone else can view it as an opportunity to serve the least of these. Not only did Adam and Eve experience homelessness when removed from the Garden of Eden, but Mary, Joseph, and Jesus experienced first-hand the rollercoaster of inadequate housing. …

The Ministries Of New Communities In The Ivory Coast Scrutinised Under The Lens Of The Theological And Magisterial Vision Of The Church, Joseph Loïc Mben Sj Nov 2024

The Ministries Of New Communities In The Ivory Coast Scrutinised Under The Lens Of The Theological And Magisterial Vision Of The Church, Joseph Loïc Mben Sj

Journal of Global Catholicism

The goal of this article is to show that the ministries of new communities are in conformity with the theological and magisterial vision of the Church and that, in many cases, they contribute to its enrichment. Following some lexical clarifications, it makes particular use of the schema of the threefold offices of Christ in which the members of new communities partake as the baptized, to show how the ministries realize each of the dimensions of Christ’s office.
