Three Trees In The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The tree is a primary symbol in three Book of Mormon texts: Zenos' s allegory of the olive tree (Jacob 5), Lehi's dream of the tree of life (1 Nephi 8), and Alma's discourse on the seed of faith (Alma 32). Interestingly, these three symbolic uses of the tree reflect a shifting emphasis from one era to the next.
Jacob 5, Romans 11: A Common Textual Tradition?
Jacob 5, Romans 11: A Common Textual Tradition?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Readers who are currently studying the letters of Paul will find an article by James E. Faulconer to be of interest. In "The Olive Tree and the Work of God: Jacob 5 and Romans 11," published in The Allegory of the Olive Tree, he suggests that the olive tree passages in Jacob 5 and Romans 11 are connected by a common text. He first discusses differences between the two passages, noting that they seem to show that the passages simply share a common rhetorical tradition. However, Faulconer goes on to consider that other linguistic evidence "suggests the possibility of …

Is Farms A Commercial Entity?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Just over two years ago, FARMS began publishing books on its own rather than in partnership with other publishers. In part that decision was made in order to give FARMS more editorial control over its publications. We also wanted to try to reach a broader audience by marketing our books ourselves, in the hopes that focusing solely on distributing our own books might be a more effective way to reach more people than getting lost in the larger marketing efforts of a larger company (the jury is still out on that issue).

Volume 1 of Pre-Columbiana: A Journal of Long-Distance Contacts is a double issue (June and December 1998) of 160 pages. Gnosticism And The Loss Of Prophecy In The Early Christian Church
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In his book The World and the Prophets, Hugh W. Nibley considers the historical role of Gnostics and their influence on the early Christian church. He explains that in the great Gnostic revolution of the second century, the whole orientation of the church changed completely. What brought this about? It was the ceasing of prophetic voices. The continuing demand in the church for the spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy, gave rise to an army of quacks and fakirs who, though discredited in time, left their mark permanently and conspicuously on the Christian church. These were the Gnostics, …

Journal Looks At Enigmatic Tree Of Life Stone
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the early 1950s archaeologist M. Wells Jakeman claimed that a carved stone monument unearthed in Izapa, Mexico, in 1941 depicted Lehi's vision of the tree of life as reported in the Book of Mormon. As is true for any archaeological find, the accuracy of that initial assessment of the stone dubbed Izapa Stela 5 will either stand or begin to fall in light of further evidence and study, though a definitive determination regarding the stela may simply not be possible.

John The Baptist And The Keys Of Baptism, John A. Tvedtnes
John The Baptist And The Keys Of Baptism, John A. Tvedtnes
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Latter-day Saint concept of priesthood keys is not well documented in the Bible. A single passage has Jesus Christ promising to give Peter "the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 16:19), while the book of Revelation indicates that Christ held "the keys of hell and of death" and "the key of David" (Revelation 1:18; 3:7; see Isaiah 22:22). There is no mention of keys in connection with John the Baptist.
