A Note On The First Christian Congregation At Rome, E. G. Sihler Mar 1932

A Note On The First Christian Congregation At Rome, E. G. Sihler

Concordia Theological Monthly

Chapter 10 of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans has been called in question by some of the higher critics. To one who realizes that Rome then was the center of Mediterranean civilization and that men (and women) incessantly came and went there for a multitude of motives, there is nothing wonderful in the preponderance of Greek names over Latin in that chapter. Prisca (Priscilla) and Aquila pursued there the manufacturing of tent-cloth; but they were natives of the province of Pontus. Paul himself, a Roman citizen by birth, was a native of Tarsus, capital of Cilicia. I will dwell …

On the sixth day of November there was laid to rest in the land of his birth, which he had left fifty-six years ago and to which he had returned in 1923, a man whose name deserves to be retained in loving and grateful memory within our circles. It is Prof. Georg Mezger, D. D., for twenty- seven years the teacher of Homiletics, Catechetics, and Pastoral Theology at our Seminary, for the post eight years teaching at the Seminary of the German Evangelical Lutheran Free Church of Saxony at Berlin-Zehlendorf. Mezger was a quiet, unassuming, unobtrusive person, at all times …

''There is no such thing in the Christian Church as mere teaching; all teaching is to be reduced to practice. The Christian Church is not a philosophers' school, where only teaching is done, but a society of people who by faith in the Gospel and mortification of the flesh are traveling on the way to everlasting life and are commissioned to lead others into this way. True, there is also teaching done in the Christian Church, and this is done first and over continued. Doctrine is the basis for every activity of the Church. However, teaching is not the end, …

He got Innocent X to condemn the five propositions of the "Augustines" of Jansenius of Port Royal.

It is now that the second period of the Middle Ages sets in. It is known as the "Age of Revival." "The Age of Revival begins with the opening of the eleventh century and ends with the discovery of the New World. During all this time civilization was making slow but sure advances; social order was gradually triumphing over feudal anarchy, and governments were becoming more regular. The last part of the period especially was marked by a great intellectual revival, a movement known as the Renaissance, or ‘New Birth', by improvements, inventions, and discoveries which greatly stirred men's minds …

The Last Years Of St. Paul, Valentine Eichenlaub May 1931

The Last Years Of St. Paul, Valentine Eichenlaub

Bachelor of Divinity

The Book of Acts ends with the statement that "Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him". The inspired writer does not tell us what took place after that. Hence we ask, did the period terminate with the Apostle's condemnation and death or with his acquittal and liberation? Naturally we have no absolute proof for either contention.

TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM," Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church". These words, written in gigantic letters of gold, appear around the beautiful dome of St. Peters in Rome which the genius of Michelangelo erected above the dust of a Galilaean fisherman. As the Church of St. Peter in Rome, the grandest and most eminent basilica in the world, triumphantly rises above the grave of this Galilaean fisherman, just so does the ecclesiastical system of Roman Catholicism find its foundation upon the confession of this Apostle and upon the …

Giovanni do Medici was made Abbot of Fonte-dolce at the age of seven, Pope Sixtus IV confirming the grant. When thirteen, he was made a cardinal by Pope Innocent VIII.

Lorenzo the Magnificent sent his boy cardinal to Rome with a warning agamid the fashionable society in "that sink of all iniquity An Italian proverb ran, "Rome seen, faith lost." Froude declares that "no imagination could invent, no malice could exaggerate, what the papal court really became under Alexander VI and Julius II and Leo X.”

Leo X became Pope in 1513 and had to near to reform his court …

A History Of The Evangelical Lutheran (Missouri Synod) Mission For China, Edward H. Arndt

Bachelor of Divinity

In writing this paper, I hope to have contributed something quite new to the history of Lutheran Foreign Missions. To my knowledge, no one has written on this phase of the work before.

Although our China Mission is still young, it is high time that its history be written. While the Mission was founded only 20 years ago, the writer has experienced much difficulty in obtaining reliable information on several points.

Clement VI, 1342-52, said, "My predecessors did not know how to be Pope.''

Villari says the Countess of Jurenne was the Pope's mistress. The Pope absolved Queen Johanna of Naples for murdering her husband; the queen sold the vast Avignon to the Pope for a beggarly 80,000 florins.

The Pope's table, horses, pageants, and ladies made his court look like that of a king. Of the twenty-five cardinals created by Clement twelve were relatives, who led the most scandalous Iives. Clement said, "The monks behave like a herd of bulls that rage against the cows of the people."

Testimonials For The Lutheran Position In Education, P E. Kretzmann

We Lutherans of the Synodical Conference are sometimes inclined to be somewhat apologetic with regard to our whole system of religious instruction. This is true even of our catechetical training in preparation for the rite of confirmation and the admission to adult or communicant membership in the Church. How else shall we explain the lowering of standards of indoctrination, particularly in adult classes? And yet, apart from Scripture precept and example, we have the support of some of the staunchest champions of the Bible, as when J. Gresham Machen writes, in his book What is Faith? (p. 150 f.) : …

The Last Twentyyears Of Peter's Life, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The reason for putting the topic in this form is obvious. It refers, as a matter of course, to the years 42-67 A. D., during which, according to belief in Roman Catholic circles, Peter, the "Prince of the Apostles," was bishop of the congregation at Rome and incidentally the first Pope. The situation with regard to the Romish claims is well set forth by Shotwell (in Shotwell and Loomis, The See of Peter, XXIII) as follows: "With reference to the Petrine doctrine … the Catholic attitude is much more than a 'predisposition to believe.' That doctrine is the fundamental basis …

The boast of the Lutheran Church has ever been that it is "the Church of the open Bible," that the Holy Scriptures are given into the hands of every member, and that every Christian is urged to ransack the Bible for the truths of salvation and the revelation of God's grace and goodness in general. The Lutheran Church has ever acknowledged, in addition, that "whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning," Rom. 15, 4, so that, while a difference is rightly made in the relative importance of the various parts of the Bible for the way of …

Reformed Tendencies In Certain American Lutheran Churches, Th Graebner

The subject is one that would properly call for an extended treatise. Reserving a more detailed discussion for a later date, the writer here would submit in the form of extracts from the official organs of several Lutheran bodies evidence of a strong Reformed leaven now working in the Synods responsible for these periodicals.
