The purpose of these scholarships and awards, bestowed once each year, is to promote scholarly pursuits in the field of Marian studies and possible contributions to the activities of the Mariological Society of America. Scholarships An Arthur W. Clinton Jr. Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a graduate degree (licentiate, master’s, or doctorate)1 whose dissertation is in the field of Mariology or Marian studies. Ordinarily, a scholarship is awarded so the applicant may be free to work for a year on the thesis or dissertation. Mary And The Nuptial Dimension Of The Constitution Of The Church In The Eucharistic Sacrifice According To Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Chao Nguyen O.P.

Throughout the centuries, Christianity has reflected deeply on the Paschal dimension of the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Christian life. However, little has been said of its nuptial character. This essay examines Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological insights on the Eucharist in both its sacrificial and nuptial dimensions in relationship to the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Balthasar, these dual aspects converge and are exemplified in Our Lady whose fiat at the Annunciation comes to a climax at the Crucifixion. There, she is mystically and nuptially united to the Son who gives himself away eucharistically, and she thus …

St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811-1868) founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856 and is known as the “Saint of the Eucharist” (a title confirmed by Pope St. John XXIII in his canonization homily, Dec. 9, 1962). He explored many aspects of the great mystery of the Holy Eucharist in the conferences he delivered to his fellow religious over the years. These conferences have been published in nine separate volumes under different titles. One of the volumes—entitled “Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament: Readings for the Month of May”— consists of thirty-one conferences, one for each day of …

This article investigates a Mariological interpretation of the sacrament of confirmation, exploring the figure of Mary as a model recipient of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, with broader implications for understanding the interrelation of nature and grace. It draws upon a strand of patristic Mariology that relates Christian initiation to conformation with Mary. Such passages are found in Origen, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa, who all speak of the souls of the faithful being conformed to Mary. As Mary received the Word of God in her womb, so Christ is formed more deeply in the soul of …

In a pair of articles published in 1951 in Orate Fratres, Jean Daniélou, S.J., demonstrated that the Fathers of the Church interpreted the Song of Songs as a prophecy of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. This interpretation fostered continuity between the Jewish liturgy, which features the Song of Songs in the observance of Passover and Sabbath, on the one hand, and Christian ritual, which gives a place of honor to the sacraments of initiation in the Easter vigil, on the other. Mary's indispensable participation in the historical event of the Incarnation which we profess in our baptismal belief, leads us to reflect on her participation in the sacramental event of the rebirth of her spiritual children. The PAMI Document “The Mother of the Lord: Memory, Presence, Hope” (art. 47; cf. USCCB, Behold your Mother, 55) points out that in the light of Ephesians 1:3-5 “baptism, the immersion into the Paschal mystery of Christ, (cf. Rm 6:3-5) corresponds sacramentally to Mary’s Immaculate Conception.” This article explores the Immaculate Conception as “a forceful sign of God’s grace operative within a creature” (art. 48) …

The Baptismal Spirituality Of St. Louis-Marie De Montfort, Frederick L. Miller

St. Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673–1716) believed that Marian consecration was the perfect renewal of one’s baptismal promises. This article explores the foundations of St. Louis-Marie’s baptismal theology as grounded in the Council of Trent and the French School of spirituality of Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle (1575–1629). In a special way, the article shows how St. Louis-Marie incorporated Marian devotion into his parish missions. For St. Louis-Marie true devotion to Mary is ultimately a baptismal gift that serves communion with the Holy Trinity.

Fr. Daniel A. Lord, SJ (1888–1955) was known to many as the Hollywood Priest. He drafted the Production Code for Hollywood, which was used for several decades. Fr. Lord was also a prominent writer, authoring over 90 books, 300 pamphlets, and countless articles. In 1952, he published a spiritual classic entitled Christ in Me — a book consisting of various thanksgivings a person could offer following reception of Holy Communion. Of the over 60 meditations, 10 are dedicated to the Blessed Mother, and these include thanksgivings with Mary, in union with Mary, and in imitation of Mary. This article provides …

This article builds on research I have already done and published in the Homiletic & Pastoral Review, in Mary at the Foot of the Cross, Vol. 6, and in Antiphon (2006). These studies were progressive so that each one developed the topic with more documentation. This article summarizes and synthesizes these studies in terms of the principles abstracted from the Pope John Paul II’s teaching and strive to find points of comparison in the works of theologians and mystics.

This panel describes how the University of Dayton planned and carried out an exhibit on the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection, featuring a garden inside the library. A “Mary garden” is a garden filled with flowers named for Mary.

The panel describes the content of the collection and how the exhibit was originally conceived; the exhibit design and programming; and the challenges faced during the planning process.

The exhibit provided a way for the Libraries to promote an archival collection that not only closely connected with the University’s mission as a Catholic institution, but also provided new opportunities …

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

Abstract

On Catholic college campuses, community outreach and inter-faith cooperation occurs most often under the direction of Student Life Offices, often with strong leadership provided by Campus Ministry. Within this more traditional approach, students learn a great deal about the value of both enterprises, though their learning remains largely undocumented, unassessed and, without the benefit of earned credit hours, unrewarded.

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

People who orient around religion differently are interacting with greater frequency than ever before. These interactions, especially in the context of college and university campuses, require young people to grapple with their own identities in ways that previous generations could more easily avoid. Conversations about religious diversity have become elevated at colleges and universities, which has led Drs. Douglas Jacobsen and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen to claim that religion is “no longer invisible” in the context of American higher education.
