Literary Theories Of Circumcision, A. W. Strouse
Literary Theories Of Circumcision, A. W. Strouse
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“Literary Theories of Circumcision” investigates a school of thought in which the prepuce, as a conceptual metaphor, organizes literary experience. In every period of English literature, major authors have employed the penis’s hood as a figure for thinking about reading and writing. These authors belong to a tradition that defines textuality as a foreskin and interpretation as circumcision. In “Literary Theories of Circumcision,” I investigate the origins of this literary-theoretical formulation in the writings of Saint Paul, and then I trace this formulation’s formal applications among medieval, early modern, and modernist writers. My study lays the groundwork for an ambitious …

Supplanting The Wrong With The Right: A Synoptic Overview Of Christian And Islamic Reactions Towards The Subject Of Heresy, Brett G. Barnard
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Whenever there is a faith that is claiming to be the “one true religion,” just what is it that defines that most sinister of opposition known as “heresy?” Is it the choices made by these aforementioned “heretics” to hold beliefs that are contrary to the mainstream? Or is the way in which “orthodox” authorities have historically asserted their own superiority while legally eliminating the competition? When overlooking monotheistic belief systems that claim universal theological authority, such as Christianity and Islam, what stands out the most is the fact that the greatest threat almost always comes not from exterior rivals, but …

Do This, In Memory Of Me!, Joseph Qiu-Lin Zhang
Do This, In Memory Of Me!, Joseph Qiu-Lin Zhang
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
In order to better understand the meaning of the Eucharist, in this paper I describe three theologians’ views about the Eucharist. Their views represent three denominations of the Church. They are: Martin Luther (Lutheran), Alexander Schmemann (Orthodox), and Thomas Merton (Roman Catholic). I compare their views from three aspects: The meaning of the presence of Jesus Christ in bread and wine in the Eucharist, the qualification of receiving communion, and the entire meaning of the Eucharist.

Marian Studies
The present issue of Marian Studies marks a turning point. Fr. Thomas A. Thompson, SM, has been the editor of Marian Studies from Volume 41 in 1990 through Volume 67 in 2016. He will remain as the editor emeritus as a tribute to his many years of selfless service as both the editor of Marian Studies and the secretary of the Mariological Society of America. Words cannot express the gratitude all of us in the MSA have towards Fr. Thompson. We know that God will reward him with graces beyond what we can offer.

Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament: Theological Foundations And Historical Development, Richard May
Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament: Theological Foundations And Historical Development, Richard May
Marian Studies
This article traces the historical development and theological foundations for the title, “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament.” It examines the reasons for the title rooted in St. Augustine’s recognition that "Jesus took his Flesh from the flesh of Mary.” Tracing the connection between the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist through the Patristic era, the Middle Ages, and more recent centuries, various works of art are noted as well the insights of spiritual writers. In particular, the contributions of St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811–1868) are highlighted along with those of Pope St. John Paul II. The article not only examines …
