The Arts As Strategy Or The Arts As Process? : A Comparison Of Two Learning Approaches In Religious Education In The Catholic Primary School, S. L. Desker

This study examined differences in understanding of Christian values between two groups of children experiencing two different learning approaches in religious education in the Catholic primary school. One learning approach used the arts as strategy. In it children expressed themselves discursively through worksheet activities: colouring in pre-designed pictures and completing written sentences, paragraphs or crossword puzzles. The other approach was learning through the arts as process. In this approach children expressed themselves non-discursively through their creative products: paintings, play dough modelling and construction scenarios. Religious counselors tend to neglect theorists who oppose religion. B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis implicitly and explicitly criticize religion in their published writings. These criticisms are connected with their atheistic philosophies. Thomism is a theistic philosophy endorsed by the Catholic Church. Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan have integrated Thomism with contemporary thought. Their works serve as models for this research project--a counselor's integration of Thomism with the philosophies of B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis.

For decades the Catholic of the United States have voluntarily supported school systems. Statistics attest that in 1970, 4,367,323 pupils we being educated in the elementary and secondary schools alone. In the recent past these schools were staffed and administered largely by religious personnel. However, research indicates that the layman pioneered in the nineteenth century in the organizing, financing administering and staffing of the Catholic School.

The Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions (BCIM) was created in 1874 as the Office of the Commissioner for Catholic Indian Missions to protect, promote, and administer the Native American mission interests of the Catholic Church in the United States.
