Theology And Science, Paul M. Bretscher
Theology And Science, Paul M. Bretscher
Concordia Theological Monthly
Less than a generation ago most people noted in science only its immediate anthropological implication. They argued whether man was descended from simian stock or, regardless of his ancestry, whether he was the inevitable outcome of predetermining causes. In either case the concept of God was next to irrelevant, and Christian theology seemed on its way out.
A Christian Answer To Marcion Of Pontus By Tertullian And Irenaeus, Carl Willard Beuschlein
A Christian Answer To Marcion Of Pontus By Tertullian And Irenaeus, Carl Willard Beuschlein
Bachelor of Divinity
The scope of the Church’s answer covers the whole field of theological thought. But because there are no existing sources of Marcion’s theology, except those contained in the answers of Christian writers, and, because even these writers have been selective, the scope of this study was necessarily limited to the basic problems of God, Scriptures, Christology, and Eschatology. The thesis of this study was that the Church, through Tertullian and Irenaeus, had answered Marcion’s attack thoroughly and decisively for the edification of the Church of Christ. For the purpose or proving this thesis, this study presents a brief outline of …
Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart
Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart
Bachelor of Divinity
Comparing Pieper and Aulen involves (1) an exposition of both positions, and (2) a juxtaposition of the two in a way which will actually exhibit their mutual relations. Whatever is relevant, to the understanding of either position In terms of thesis or antithesis is relevant to the thesis. Since this involves practically limitless source-material, a rigorous selectivity had to be exercised. Naturally this involves the element of judgment on the writer’s part, since he must select what seems particularly relevant and reject what does not. This thesis does not pretend to be anything like an exhaustive treatment. It attempts merely …
The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli
The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli
Concordia Theological Monthly
Every age must restate the events of history because in every age these events appear in a specific focus. The contemporary theological discussion concerning ontological and existential knowledge, the essence of Biblical faith, and the meaning of language in Christian theology make the controversy of the fourth century a highly modern issue. Indeed, the 20th century has to state its Christological position afresh. It cannot simply repeat the fathers between Nicaea and Constantinople. Yet it can learn a great deal from these fathers by seeking to understand, sine ira et studio, the case of Athanasius versus Arius.
An Analysis Of The Theology Of The Merger Documents Between Lutherans And Reformed In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Walter Harms
An Analysis Of The Theology Of The Merger Documents Between Lutherans And Reformed In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Walter Harms
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis will analyze the theology of the merger documents between Lutherans and Reformed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The analysis will consist in looking at the theology of these document• to discover what theology they contain, how the theology of one agrees with the theology of the others, and the purpose for which the documents• themselves propose this theology is to be used.
Luther's Theology Of The Holy Spirit In His Sermons Of John 14, 15, 16, Gerhard Galchutt
Luther's Theology Of The Holy Spirit In His Sermons Of John 14, 15, 16, Gerhard Galchutt
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this research is to participate in the denominational investigations with regard to specific theologies of the Spirit. Scientifically stated our. purpose is only to see what Luther himself says·about the Spirit and the Spirit's working.
The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin
The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.
The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh
The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is, therefore, the fundamental teaching about man. in the Pre-Mosaic revelation that is dealt with in this thesis. This study will treat both individual man and a group of Men, viz., a society. It is plain from the previous explanation that this study is not limited by the traditional dogmatic division of Christian anthropology. It is a synthetic or systematic exegesis instead of the familiar consecutive exegesis, chapter by chapter, as presented in commentaries. This material will be collected under five cardinal themes on the doctrine of man in Genesis, with each theme displaying disparities and sim1larities or opinion …
Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer
Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Two customs of thought have tended to erect, if not a barrier, at least a filter between theology and Christian life.
The one is the hoary distinction between the "doctrinal" and the "practical" portions of the epistles - as though the apostles were "teaching" less strenuously when they were shaping the life and behavior of their readers than when they were discussing their faith. The other is the theologically more recent distinction between kerygma and didache and the assumption that when a preacher wants to save people, he tells them about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; when he …
The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen
The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen
Concordia Theological Monthly
To assert that philosophy and theology are not identical would obviously be unnecessary in addressing myself to the present group; but to remind you that there are vast areas of common interest shared by these two disciplines is probably not superfluous. Living as we do in a time when reason is often ridiculed and up-to-the- minute theologians present highly rationalized arguments in favor of antirational views, we need to remind ourselves that philosophy is inescapable. The moment we reflect critically upon our experiences and beliefs, we begin to philosophize.

Luther's Apologetics, Siegbert Becker
Luther's Apologetics, Siegbert Becker
Concordia Theological Monthly
The renewed interest in the construction of a Christian apologetic which is stirring in Protestantism ought also to stimulate Lutherans to take a fresh look at the possibilities of defending the Christian faith before an unbelieving world. As Protestantism shortens its lines in an attempt to strengthen its position, it behooves a Lutheran theologian to come to a clear understanding of the nature and the place of apologetics in the Christian witness.
Psychology In Relationship To Theology, Martin L. Maehr
Psychology In Relationship To Theology, Martin L. Maehr
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper is not to answer specific questions but rather to probe widely and, to as great a degree as possible, effectively into the field in order to raise certain questions and determine the point of thrust of future research.
Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz
Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz
Bachelor of Divinity
Although Origen's theology in the narrow, sense can hardly be called a synthesis of Christian dogma in the third century, yet an appreciation of him as a systematician requires an acquaintance with the theology of his predecessors. De Principiis did not evolve spontaneously from the mind of this great Alexandrian, but consciously or unconsciously drew upon the speculations and the formulations of the Fathers. For this reason a section has been included giving in very brief detail the theological atmosphere of the century preceding Origen, ending with his great North African contemporary, Tertullian.
Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten
Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis does not pretend to be an exhaustive study of the entire issue of God’s manifestations and natural theo1ogy. Few Missouri Synod Lutherans have concerned themselves with the problem. Jaroslav Pelikan refers to the “problem of natural theology" in his From Luther to Kierkegaard. He believes that Kant has rendered a great service to Lutheran theology by ridding it of Aristotelianism.
The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters
The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper is limited in its main part to what August Vilmar had to say about the Sacraments and what he termed “sacramental actions" ( sakramentale Handlungen). It is difficult, in a few words, to determine just what Vilmar included under these terms because in keeping with the Lutheran Symbols he did not categorically limit the Sacraments to a certain number and exclude all other acts of the Church. In certain contexts he spoke of seven and more Sacraments, and in other contexts, of only two Sacraments, placing the lesser acts of the Church into the category “sacramental” actions." In …
Justification By Faith In Modern Theology (Continued), Henry P. Hamann Jr.
Justification By Faith In Modern Theology (Continued), Henry P. Hamann Jr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
We shall begin the final installment of this article with the judgment that one of the truths about justification that St. Paul holds is that justification is complete before there is such a thing as faith. This fact of Paul's teaching has been known, particularly in the theological literature of "Missouri Lutherans," as objective justification. The term is not a good one, chiefly for the reason that the counterpart to it, subjective justification, if it means anything, should mean a justification that goes on in the believer, a thing which no "Missourian" ever held.
The Theology Of Norman Vincent Peale, William Lehmann Jr.
The Theology Of Norman Vincent Peale, William Lehmann Jr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
Norman Vincent Peale is the teacher of a method which he calls the "Art of Living." This method has had great popular appeal, not only among the laity but also among the clergy. The purpose of this study is not to evaluate the method as such, but rather to consider the question which must be asked and answered before intelligent evaluation can take place: "What is Peale's theology?"

Section XXIII: Theological Meaning
In 1957 a little man of about eighty years gave a series of lectures at the Washington School of Psychiatry. He had come to the United States from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to speak under the auspices of an institution concerned with restoring to health the mentally ill or aberrant. The guest was a philosopher, not a renowned therapist. Yet for Martin Buber (1878- ) himself such a designation is both acceptable and unacceptable. On the one hand he concerns himself with the objective world as philosophy conceptualizes it. On the other hand his primary concern is not speaking …

Section I: Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem: Background of Western Civilization
Christianity began as a religion centering around the person of Jesus, and not as a philosophy. It was rooted in Judaism, likewise a religion, not a philosophy. The truths of both were held to have been revealed by God and hence the need for a rational inquiry into their nature was minimized. Many individuals to whom Christianity appealed were satisfied with the simple message of repentance and salvation, but there were many others whose minds were more inquiring and who could not rest until they had explored in a rational way the deep questions which Christianity posed. Most early Christians …

2. The Impact Of Darwinism On Religion, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart
Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences
The tremendous impact of evolution upon Western religious thought resulted in large part from the sweeping implications of the theory itself, which challenged the basic tenets of traditional dogma. It is difficult to understand the nature and intensity of the controversy that developed, however, if it is not understood that the challenge was given additional weight by the ascendency of science in the nineteenth century. In considering the influence of Darwin's findings on religion, as on other areas of thought, it should be kept in mind that the theory of evolution was presented to a world that was observing a …

7. Charles Hartshorne, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart
Section XXIII: Theological Meaning
Theology differs from philosophical or scientific inquiry in general by being concerned about man in relationship to God. The existentialist says with distressing simplicity that "existence precedes essence" and hence he concerns himself with man in his concrete situation rather than with the abstract idea of man. We have also seen that Protestant theologians have for the most part abandoned the scholastic urge to circumscribe experience in a logical system. In fact, we see nowadays almost a systematic effort to avoid constructing self-contained schematizations. There is in contemporary Protestant theology a general protest against the rigidity seemingly required by the …

6. Ian T. Ramsey, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold L. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart
Section XXIII: Theological Meaning
In view of the requirement of verifiability that is demanded by certain philosophical schools, there seems little justification for what are conventionally recognized as theological statements. Certainly no one man has yet succeeded, except perhaps to his own satisfaction, in expressing religious notions in such language and in verifying by such a method that universal consent is gained for the validity of his system. If the charm of empirical verification is not invoked, then for some minds there is little reason to say anything. Obviously, given such rigid requirements for securing a sympathetic audience, theological discussion may find itself standing …
The Case For Four Adverbs: Reflections On Chalcedon, Martin H. Scharlemann
The Case For Four Adverbs: Reflections On Chalcedon, Martin H. Scharlemann
Concordia Theological Monthly
For many years it has been fashionable to deprecate any and all attempts, whether past or present, at formulating Biblical truth. Theologians have belittled such efforts by pleading that propositional theology fails to capture and convey the recitatif of the kerygma; and philosophers of religion have contended that any undertaking which proposes to systematize revelation was and is foredoomed to failure because of the limitations and instability of human speech and language. As a consequence the prevailing mood in large areas of Christendom is one of pessimism toward all endeavors to work at the unity we seek by drawing up …
A Critique Of Aulen's Christus Victor, George O. Evenson
A Critique Of Aulen's Christus Victor, George O. Evenson
Concordia Theological Monthly
One of the most significant theological books published in recent decades is Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen. In it he suggests that there are three main ideas or theories of the atonement: the classic, the Latin, and the subjective-humanistic. That which makes the book both significant and controversial is the author's contention that the authentic Scriptural doctrine of the atonement is the classic idea, that Luther was an exponent of the classic idea and that therefore the orthodox Lutheran doctrine of the atonement differs markedly both from Scripture and from Luther. Aulen asserts that “the doctrine of Lutheranism became a …
Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel
Robert Barnes And Wittenberg, N. S. Tjernagel
Concordia Theological Monthly
From the year 1521, when Henry VIII attacked the theology of Martin Luther in his celebrated Assertio septem sacramentorum, to 1540, when he reiterated his theological Romanism by ordering the execution of Thomas Cromwell and Dr. Robert Barnes, English policy respecting Lutheranism went full cycle. Between those dates on which the conservative position of Henry VIII was so emphatically stated, the king of England departed from orthodoxy and came very near to espousing the theology of the Lutheran reformers of Wittenberg, Germany. The royal dalliance with heresy during those years was not unconnected with the king's success in securing his …

Not Discerning The Body In 1 Corinthians 11:29 In The Light Of Pauline Eucharistic Theology Of 1 Corinthians, Ralph C. Kruger
Bachelor of Divinity
Theological trends determine the specific emphases of the confessional doctrines of the Church. As throughout the history of the Church when new trends and theological postulates appear, the student of theology is called upon to examine carefully their content on the basis of Scripture in order to reject or absorb these propositions into his own theology. Twentieth century theology, captivated by the ecumenical movement, is engaged in renewed study of the particu1ar doctrines of the Church and Sacraments. The purpose of this thesis is to present for the reader's evaluation a brief study of a phrase from 1 Cor. 11:29 …
Vespers, Its History And Theology, Thomas N. Green
Vespers, Its History And Theology, Thomas N. Green
Bachelor of Divinity
When the Church of Christ worships it is inevitable that the worshipers use Forms, or Rites, or Orders, for only in this way does the worship become meaningful to all. One of the Orders which the Church Catholic has used for centuries is Vespers. This Order is being used more and more in the Lutheran Church today, and hence it is necessary to make a careful study of the Form.
The thesis which follows takes up just these problems, namely, the history and theology or the Order or Vespers.
Casidoro De Reina Translator Of The Spanish Bible, Robert Gerhard Huebner
Casidoro De Reina Translator Of The Spanish Bible, Robert Gerhard Huebner
Bachelor of Divinity
Casiodoro de Reina printed the first complete Spanish Bible in 1569. The main purpose of this study is to present the biography of Casiodoro de Reina. It was considered of interest to observe what, if any, Lutheran influence could be traced in Reina's Bible translation.
