Rudolf Bultmann And The Sacrament Of Holy Baptism, John H. Elliott Jun 1961

Rudolf Bultmann And The Sacrament Of Holy Baptism, John H. Elliott

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the fullness of time God sent forth His Son, a pre-existent divine Being, who appears on earth as a man. He dies the death of a sinner on the cross and makes atonement for the sins of men. His resurrection marks the beginning of the cosmic catastrophe … all who belong to Christ's Church and are joined to the Lord by Baptism and the Eucharist are certain of resurrection to salvation. . .. The Personal Union In The Theology Of Barth, Brunner And Berkouwer, George Lobien May 1961

The Personal Union In The Theology Of Barth, Brunner And Berkouwer, George Lobien

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem about to be investigated is whether or not G. C. Berkouwer, Karl Barth and .Emil Brunner teach a personal union or the two natures 1n our Lord Jesus Christ. Or, to state it more comprehensibly, it they claim to teach a personal union of the two natures, we then propose to uncover exactly what they mean by the use of this term. Furthermore, throughout the study we shall attempt to indicate to the reader the areas of agreement and disagreement among these three outstanding Reformed theologians. Lastly, it must be admitted in all candor that our appraisal of …

The aim of this thesis is to determine the concept of faith which Wesley developed during a life principally devoted to the understanding and significance of Christian experience. Since this life touched every decade in the eighteenth century, this thesis bas been necessarily extensive.

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis May 1961

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our Lutheran Church was late in beginning work in the Philippines. We do not have much time as American missionaries to work in this field. We have a real challenge before us in building an indigenous Lutheran Church in a short time. This paper is concerned with the doctrinal aapect of the indigenous church. · If a strong, evangelical Lutheran Church is to take root and grow in the Philippines, it must be built upon the right foundation. This must be done in the training of students for the ministry who can better translate these theological concepts to their own …

Theology And Church Music As Bearers And Interpreters Of The Verbum Dei, Walter B. Buszin Jan 1961

Theology And Church Music As Bearers And Interpreters Of The Verbum Dei, Walter B. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the very first issue of Musik und Kirche, published in January/February 1930, Christhard Mahrenholz stated in his foreword that no age or generation can afford simply to take for granted that a relationship exists between the church and her music. Mahrenholz emphasized at the time that the very nature of the problems involved demands that each generation study this question anew.

Melanchthon The Theologian, Robert D. Preus Aug 1960

Melanchthon The Theologian, Robert D. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

It would seem impossible that the theme "Melanchthon the Theologian," which is as comprehensive as it is indefinite, could be discussed satisfactorily in any brief presentation. The actual purpose and scope of this study is, however, narrower than the rather general theme might indicate. I propose to consider Melanchthon’s contributions to that discipline which is now known as dogmatics, to trace the impact of his systematic bent upon Lutheran theology, to delineate some of his main ideas on theology, and thus to assess him as a theologian.

Luther And Melanchthon, Erwin L. Lueker Aug 1960

Luther And Melanchthon, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther speaks directly to us in German language; Melanchthon in Latin. This may have some significance whether or not we agree with Schiller that the "soul of a people is in its language."

Attitudes Toward The Use Of Force And Violence In Thomas Muentzer, Menno Simons, And Martin Luther, Ralph L. Moellering Jul 1960

Attitudes Toward The Use Of Force And Violence In Thomas Muentzer, Menno Simons, And Martin Luther, Ralph L. Moellering

Concordia Theological Monthly

The treatise offered here seeks to extract and delineate, from three leading figures of the Reformation period, three basic attitudes toward the use of force and violence which have been, and continue to be, assumed by the followers of Jesus Christ. When Constantine first raised the Christian banner in front of his armies he was already tending in the direction of the first position exemplified most clearly in the career and theology of Thomas Muentzcr.

Scripture And Tradition In The Council Of Trent, Richard Baepler Jun 1960

Scripture And Tradition In The Council Of Trent, Richard Baepler

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study deals with the historical circumstances surrounding the Roman Catholic doctrinal decision at the Council of Trent regarding the authority of Scripture and tradition. By examining this decision in the light of events which led to its formulation as well as in the light of its subsequent fate, we shall be introduced to an issue which has become very much alive in both Roman Catholic and Protestant thought.

Philip Melanchthon's Doctrine Of The Holy Eucharist, Randell Tonn Jun 1960

Philip Melanchthon's Doctrine Of The Holy Eucharist, Randell Tonn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This dissertation is an attempt to determine, primarily on the basis of his own major writings, opinions and letters, the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist as taught, believed and confessed by Philip Melanchthon. The question we seek to answer is: “What was Philip Melanchthon’s doctrine of the Holy Eucharist?" This question is deliberately phrased to exclude the question, "What do other commentators say that he taught and believed?" On the basis of his own words, we seek to determine what is Melanchthon saying about the Eucharist; not what might he be interpreted as saying; what would we prefer him to …

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager Jun 1960

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because of the central place which the Confessions give to the doctrine of justification we feel that we can do nothing less than make this doctrine the unifying principle in this thesis. We do so for this reason that the unifying principle or a Lutheran philosophy of education cannot be much diverse from the material principle of its theology. If theology is the basis or the foundation upon which the superstructure of a Lutheran philosophy of education can be built up, then the two and their unifying principles are more closely related than we might assume.

The Unity Of Scripture, Walter R. Roehrs May 1960

The Unity Of Scripture, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The unity of Scripture is an article of faith. This unity is also an objective fact that exists apart from faith and does not become a fact merely when I believe it (existentialist theology). But it is more than an arithmetic problem. It is not a mere unit sum at which we arrive by adding a number of given parts and fractions into a whole. This means that it is more than the addition of demonstrable facts and figures.

An Analysis Of The Confessionalism Of Edmund Schlink, Based On His “Theologie Der Lutherischen Bekenntnisschriften,” Together With A Translation Of The Original German, Herbert Bouman May 1960

An Analysis Of The Confessionalism Of Edmund Schlink, Based On His “Theologie Der Lutherischen Bekenntnisschriften,” Together With A Translation Of The Original German, Herbert Bouman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This present study is concerned with the last-named work and grew out of long pre-occupation with the task of producing an English version. The importance of Schlink's book has been widely recognized in Lutheran circles. To make it available to additional thousands of English-speaking Lutherans who are not able to make full use of the material in its original German, the work of translation was begun by the late Paul F. Koehneke of Milwaukee, and after his death, carried forward to completion by the present writer.

This essay proposes to subject Schlink's theology of the Lutheran Confessions to a critical …

The Doctrine Of Justification And Reconciliation In The Theology Of Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus Apr 1960

The Doctrine Of Justification And Reconciliation In The Theology Of Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

The doctrine of reconciliation is among the last subjects Barth has spoken on. This doctrine is presented in Vol. IV of his Church Dogmatics and embraces three parts. In Barth's dogmatics reconciliation includes not only the doctrine of the atonement and justification but also the work and person of Christ and the application of salvation (conversion and sanctification).

Prolegomena According To Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus Mar 1960

Prolegomena According To Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

In a former article I pointed out by way of introduction that Karl Barth by his raking cognizance of both exegesis and church history ranks rightfully above most of his contemporaries as a dogmatician of stature. In the present article I shall try to examine Barth's opinion on the subjects of theology and dogmatics more specifically. We shall find that Barth takes a position on the matter of prolegomena very close to that of the 16th- and 17th-cenrury Lutheran and Reformed teachers, that his position is in the main both Scriptural and sane. Here, although we shall perhaps discern nothing …

The Word Of God In The Theology Of Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus Feb 1960

The Word Of God In The Theology Of Karl Barth, Robert D. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this series of articles is to acquaint the reader with the theology of the leading Protestant theologian of our day, Karl Barth. It is often more rewarding to examine one theologian of real stature rather than dissipate our limited space upon a more sketchy overview of the ideas of two or three well-known theologians. And Barth is the man whom we must still choose today. Certainly Bultmann and Tillich, whose theologies are philosophically oriented and structured, will have far less to offer the Christian Church. Brunner, who really never left the ground of liberalism, is no longer …

Preaching For The Church (Review), Arthur C. Repp, George W. Hoyer Feb 1960

Preaching For The Church (Review), Arthur C. Repp, George W. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In spite of their preoccupation with preaching most pastors are not particularly interested in books about preaching. Sermon books are more promising. They can offer valuable ideas, give a few practical hints now and then, present a stimulating model, and not infrequently suggest an outline to the harried pastor. But a book on homiletics at best seems to promise a review of those principles which every seminary graduate ought to know. If he no longer remembers them, they probably were not very helpful anyway. After all, one learns to preach by preaching.

The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann Dec 1959

The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The origins of the synagog are lost in the obscurity of the past. There seem to be adequate reasons for believing that this religious institution did not exist in pre-Exilic times. Whether, however, the synagog came into being during the dark years of the Babylonian Captivity, or whether it dates back only to the early centuries after the return of the Jews to Palestine, is a matter of uncertainty. The oldest dated evidence we have for the existence of a synagog was found in Egypt in 1902 and consists of a marble slab which records the dedication of such a …
