The Logos Concept Of Justin Martyr-Relation To The Person, The Natures, And The States Of Existence Of The Logos, Marcus T. Lang Jun 1950

The Logos Concept Of Justin Martyr-Relation To The Person, The Natures, And The States Of Existence Of The Logos, Marcus T. Lang

Bachelor of Divinity

The main purpose, or course, of' the apologies in general, and of the use or the Logos concept in these apologies in particular, was to present to the unbelieving world a justification for the worship of' Christ by the Christians. Since the Logos concept was a current and accepted one in both the pagan and Jewish world, if it could successfully be identified with the person of Jesus Christ, a great victory would be won. And, to a large degree, that attempt was eventually successful, as Dean Inge points out when he characterizes the Logos-doctrine as "the formula which converted …

Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush Jun 1950

Research Studies In Religious Education, Louis F. Rush

Bachelor of Divinity

The Lutheran Education Association assumed the task of compiling a bibliography of research studies in religious education to fill the need for such a catalogue. The bibliography, consisting of classified abstracts with index, was compiled especially with the needs of educators of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in mind. It should be suggestive for future research studies in religious education and should serve to prevent duplication of effort as well as to suggest areas of study not previously covered or covered inadequately.

A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger Jun 1950

A Study Of The Cross, Harold Krueger

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this thesis is: to give to the reader a clearer picture and understanding of that most sacred symbol, the cross. An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the passages of the New Testament which speak of the Royal Priesthood of Believers. Actually, there are only five instances where the Christian priesthood is specifically mentioned. They are I Peter 2:5; I Peter 2:9; Revelation. 1:6; Revelation 5:10; and Revelation 20:6. All other references to priests or priesthood are either to the priestly office of Christ or to Jewish and pagan priests.

The Relationship Of Faith And Knowledge In The Lutheran Confessions, Jaroslav Pelikan May 1950

The Relationship Of Faith And Knowledge In The Lutheran Confessions, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

The proper understanding of the nature of faith is a matter of central importance in Christian theology. For this reason the Christian Church has sought for terminology by which to describe faith in a manner that will do justice to all the affirmations of Holy Scripture concerning it. The origin and development of some of this terminology was the topic of a recent essay in the pages of this journal. There it was indicated that the distinction between the believing (knowing) subject and the believed (known) object was intended to safeguard an integral element in the Christian definition of faith …

The Genius Of Lutheran Corporate Worship, Walter E. Buszin Apr 1950

The Genius Of Lutheran Corporate Worship, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

In her services of corporate worship the Christian Church presents the eternal verities of God's holy and infallible Word, exhorts to high regard for Christian doctrine and to the application of Biblical teaching, receives the benefits of the blessed Sacraments, and enjoys a fellowship which has its roots in the very Gospel of Christ Jesus. Bearing in mind the character of these momentous objectives of ecclesiastical worship and taking into consideration, too, the words of warning expressed in Holy Writ itself (Eccl. 5: 1), the devout and intelligent Christian attaches to his corporate worship activities thoughts of sancity and consecration, …

God's Grace The Preacher's Tool. A Homiletical Study Of Titus 2:11-14, Richard R. Caemmerer Feb 1950

God's Grace The Preacher's Tool. A Homiletical Study Of Titus 2:11-14, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Most pastors read the Christmas Epistle during the holidays. Many preached on it as a text for a Christmas message. As they prepared that sermon, they probably realized that this text speaks only secondarily to congregations. Primarily it is addressed to a pastor, a pastor who is training other pastors. It does not speak specifically of Christmas, but of the redemption of Jesus Christ in general; not specifically of the moods and joys of Christmas, but of the objective of good works in Christian people. Hence the text speaks to pastors about their own ministry to people, especially the ministry …

The Origins Of The Object-Subject Antithesis In Lutheran Dogmatics. A Study In Terminology, Jaroslav Pelikan Feb 1950

The Origins Of The Object-Subject Antithesis In Lutheran Dogmatics. A Study In Terminology, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the tasks with which both Christian preaching and Christian dogmatics are confronted is the attempt to express Biblical testimony in non-Biblical terminology. Such an attempt is as difficult as it is necessary. In order to perform its responsibility, the proclamation of the Christian message in preaching must resort to ways of speaking that are not found in the Scriptures. Similarly, theologians have always found it necessary to collect into one expression what is said in several different parts of the Scriptures. But the difficulty in any such expression is that a word taken over from extra-Christian sources may …

A Statement On Parents' Rights And The School Question, A. C. Mueller Jan 1950

A Statement On Parents' Rights And The School Question, A. C. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany, The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and the National Lutheran Council invited educators and theologians of the United States, Germany, and other European countries to a study conference (June 1-10 at Bad Boll, Germany) on parents' rights and the school in the modern state. This was the first of four study conferences, and when the Germans set apart the entire conference for the study of Christian education and its current problems, they indicated how vital this problem is in Germany today. The findings of this seminar were summarized in the statement which is herewith submitted.

Foreword, F. E. Mayer Jan 1950

Foreword, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

1900-1950: the end of the first half of the twentieth century brings mankind to an important milestone in the history of the world. The pastor will take time out to review the events of the past five decades and to evaluate correctly the signs of the times. But more important still, mindful of the fleeting of time and the approaching end of all time, the pastor will employ this opportunity to review his work not in terms of years, decades, centuries, millennia, but sub specie aeternitatis.

Luther's Endorsement Of The "Confessio Bohemica.", Jaroslav Pelikan Jr. Nov 1949

Luther's Endorsement Of The "Confessio Bohemica.", Jaroslav Pelikan Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

As a result of the research that has been carried on in the past half century on the theology of the Reformation. we are now in an advantageous position for a historical and theological evaluation of the faith of the Reformers. What began as purely historical investigation has become instead a recovery of Reformation insights that had been lost in the intervening centuries. For this reason contemporary theological scholarship has been compelled to buttress its systematic presentations with historical material and to make its historical study relevant by drawing theological conclusions from it.

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder Oct 1949

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is a third reason why we cannot engage in the development of doctrine. Our time and energies are so completely occupied with the study of the Word of God and the old doctrine of the Church that we have not a moment's time to expend on the business of further developing the doctrine. We read in the Proceedings of the Michigan District, 1897, page 36: "We all need to deepen our understanding of the doctrine. Let no man think that he has fully understood the whole doctrine. In this life we shall never reach that point. We know the …

The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte Oct 1949

The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this essay is to interpret and illuminate one of the New Testament Epistles which focuses to a rare degree the interests, needs, and problems of the Church of the first century, and gives classical expression to the teachings of Christ and His Apostles in regard to them. These interests, needs, and problems are not greatly different from those which confront thoughtful Christian men and women the world over today. Of this First Epistle of Peter, Luther once said: “It is one of the noblest books of the New Testament, and the true, pure Gospel."

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder Sep 1949

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second reason why we refuse to have anything to do with developing the doctrine is that the development of the Christian doctrine simply means the destruction of the Christian doctrine. "He who sets out to improve the Scriptural doctrines is losing the doctrines. 'Progress' is here only a euphemism for retrogression; 'development' is a misnomer for destruction." (Proc., Westena. District, 1897, p. 68.) Or, as Dr. Pieper puts it: "That there can be no development of the Christian doctrine is evidenced by the patent fact that whenever men set out to develop the doctrine, they invariably pervert and destroy …

An Outline Of The First Epistle Of John, Martin J. Hasz Aug 1949

An Outline Of The First Epistle Of John, Martin J. Hasz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The chief isagogical problem of the Epistle is its structure. Dr. R. C.H. Lenski states: “A curious circumstance about the letter is the fact that it seems to have no divisions. Commentators divide it in one way or in another, and state their reasons for such a division; but when one reads the letter, the proposed divisions do not satisfy. They are upset by the series of repetitions and reiterations that occur throughout the letter. That fact makes some interpreters complain about the lack of logic; but this letter has no formal parts, such as we commonly use and expect. …
