The Relation Of The Liturgy To The Word, H. Richard Klann
The Relation Of The Liturgy To The Word, H. Richard Klann
Concordia Theological Monthly
The essential aim of this investigation is not merely the historical delineation of liturgical practices, nor the consideration of liturgical minutiae in their historical setting and development, nor the establishment of a theological basis against liturgical innovations, but rather to state the Lutheran principles by which a pastor will be able to judge the relation of the liturgy to the proclamation of the Word in the worship of a congregation.

Race Relations -The Christian Directive, Richard R. Caemmerer
Race Relations -The Christian Directive, Richard R. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Does the Christian religion have something to say c:onceming race relations?
There are those who would limit the references of the Christian religion to race relations simply to those data of the Old and New Testaments of sacred Scripture which concern races. Thus they assemble material on the creation of man, the separation of races, the pattern of races in the pre-Christian era, the nature of races and the Biblical references to them in the Christian era, and the like.
The Universal Priesthood Of Believers With Luther's Comments, L. W. Spitz
The Universal Priesthood Of Believers With Luther's Comments, L. W. Spitz
Concordia Theological Monthly
The universal priesthood of believers is the Christian Church on earth, the Communion of Saints, which Jesus Christ has redeemed, purchased, and won from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that it may be His own, live under Him, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, and which the Holy Ghost has called by the Gospel, enlightened with His gifts, sanctified and kept in the true faith. Thus Luther has taught us. Each Christian confesses …
God's Concurrence In Human Action, John Theodore Mueller
God's Concurrence In Human Action, John Theodore Mueller
Concordia Theological Monthly
In presenting the doctrine of divine providence, the teachers of the Christian Church usually stress, in the first place, God's actual conservation of all created things, by which His creatures persist both in their being and their operation (in esse suo ac vi operandi). Should their categories at times appear as rather scholastic or academic, it is well to remember that they were endeavoring to clarify and preserve intact in its purity the somewhat mysterious Scripture doctrine of God's actual participation in creatural action against the two fundamental fallacies of erring human reason: fatalism and atheism.
Chalcedon After Fifteen Centuries, Jaroslav Pelikan
Chalcedon After Fifteen Centuries, Jaroslav Pelikan
Concordia Theological Monthly
This year marks the fifteen hundredth anniversary of one of the most important councils of the ancient Church, the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Chalcedon is generally regarded as the conclusion of almost a century and a half of theological discussion centering in the doctrine of the person of Christ. This discussion came to a focus at the first four ecumenical councils-Nicaea in 325, Constantinople in 381, Ephesus in 431, and Chalcedon in 451. Out of these four councils and the theological work that went into them there emerged the dogmas of the Trinity and of the person of Christ …
Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part I.), F. E. Mayer
Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part I.), F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Luther's re-discovery of the proper distinction between Law and Gospel may be viewed as the starting point of the Lutheran reformation. The proper distinction between these two doctrines is the heart and core of Lutheran theology, or in the words of the Formula of Concord, Art. V, "the specially brilliant light which has come to us through the Reformation." Where this distinction is properly observed, the Scriptures will be correctly explained and understood; conversely, where these two doctrines are mingled, the merits of Christ are obscured, and the Christian is robbed of his comfort. The Lutheran Reformation may be viewed …
Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram
Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram
Concordia Theological Monthly
Professor Emil Brunner, the Reformed theologian at the University of Zurich, probably requires little introduction. He, more than any others of the so-called neo-orthodox theologians from Europe, has fast found his way into American Protestant theological thinking. his books seem to be showing up more and more frequently even in Lutheran parsonages, and his name has appeared a number of times in past issues of this very journal. This wide respect which Brunner enjoys is not undeserved. He has been considerably instrumental in encouraging Protestant theologians to return to the rock whence they were hewn, to the classical Christian doctrines …
The Essentials Of Effective Pastoral Counseling, Otto E. Sohn
The Essentials Of Effective Pastoral Counseling, Otto E. Sohn
Concordia Theological Monthly
Pastoral counseling is an age-old art. When impenitent King David all but succumbed under the impact of a terrific sin, his divinely sent pastoral adviser, the prophet Nathan, deftly aided him to find a solution to his problem. By means of a well-chosen parable he first led him to recognize the enormity of his sin, and from there it was but a short step to confession, absolution, and a new lease on life. Scriptural examples of this blessed soul healing function could be greatly multiplied, especially from the ministry of Jesus and the Apostles.
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
Bachelor of Divinity
Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.
The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …
A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr
A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
In the following pages an attempt has been made to investigate these problems. No effort has been made to discuss the methods that have been used to deal with them, but where these problems have been solved or have been brought closer to solution owing to certain circumstances, the author has tried to take cognizance of this fact. This study cannot be exhaustive as will become apparent especially in Chapter IV, which deals with the religious life of the country people.
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Bachelor of Divinity
The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.
The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann
The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann
Bachelor of Divinity
It is not within the scope of this paper to treat the theology of Ernst Troeltsch in any kind of detail. Much less is it the intention of this study to pass judgment on his theology as a whole, except in the most general way, and on the basis of the judgment of others. But in order to make the review of his work The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches more understandable, and to provide a background for the critique of his sociology of Lutheranism, a few, paragraphs at the very beginning will be devoted to a rapid overview …

The Public Ministry In The Apostolic Age, H. G. Brueggemann
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the hope of resolving the points of disagreement relating to the doctrine of the call, the ministry, and the Church, which for a number of years threatened the unity of the constituent bodies of the Synodical Conference, the convention in 1946 appointed an Interim Committee. In 1948 this committee of eight men submitted its findings to the Synodical Conference in a majority and a minority report.

Where Christ Is, There Is The Church
An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark
An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The hypothesis of this study is that there is a relationship between race attitudes and "denominocentrism, " and with certain social categories, e.g., age, social class, income, education, etc., in the Church of the Brethren in the Pacific Coast Region. If a relationship can be identified and analyzed, the results will be of value as tools in helping to understand, predict, and change human behavior. It might be further suggested that if there is a strong relationship between attitudes and certain social categories in the church, attitudes of the Brethren on these issues, and perhaps on many more, are, to …

The Christian And Government, A. M. Rehwinkel
The Christian And Government, A. M. Rehwinkel
Concordia Theological Monthly
The form of government under which we live is a democracy. "Democracy" means rule by the people. It means that sovereignty in a democracy is vested in the people, and "sovereignty" means supreme power. We, the people of the United States, are the sovereigns of this nation. The Government officials in Washington, in our State capitals, and in the seats of our municipal governments are our agents and delegates bound to respect the will of the people. But this also means that the people are responsible for the attitude and actions of their government. Every privilege has a corresponding responsibility, …
