Departed Lebanese Women Studied The Science Of Qira’At, Fatme Mourad, Ziad Hajj

Al Jinan الجنان

This research highlights the major contributions of the female reciters Fatima bint Al-Younini Al-Ba'albakiya from the eighth century Hijri, and from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries of the Hijra, the reciter Bushra bint Muhammad Amin Al-Munasafi Al-Beiruti Al-Saydaawiya, and Fadia bint Atef Afara Al-Saydaawiya, may Allah have mercy on them all and elevate their status. Since the science of Quranic readings is among the noble sciences associated with the Quran, it sparked my interest to trace the path and explore the lives of eminent Lebanese women who received this knowledge from my country, thereby bridging between Qur’anic readings and History. …

Al- Iddah Between Shari’A And Medical Sciences, Mohamad Kilani, Bashar Ejel

Al Jinan الجنان

This study addresses a significant issue in Sharia: the concept of Iddah (the waiting period for a Muslim woman). There are numerous questions regarding its legality, necessity, and the wisdom behind it. Scholars often explain that its primary purpose is to establish the lineage of a newborn and prevent lineage confusion. This study aims at determining whether the rulings of Iddah are based on logical reasoning or if they are purely devotional without apparent rationale. Additionally, it examines the argument for disregarding Iddah provisions when lineage can be confirmed through DNA testing and based on a man's marital imprint. The …

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The digital age has long dawned in many of the Tibetan Monasteries in exile. Thus, the inclusion of internet platforms and the usage of digital communication technologies was naturally part of my ethnomusicological collaboration with the Tibetan Bön monastic chant leader and scholar Geshé Dawa Namgyal Kharnatsang on the sacred recitation of the Yungdrung Bön tradition of Menri Monastery in Dolanji, India. In this article I will offer insights into Kharnatsang’s and my motivation to develop a hybrid collaboration and discuss the role and impact of the digital technologies on the traditional chain of transmission. I will draw on two …

“Forget The Rest ...”: Notes On Magnetic Tape And Other Antiquated Media As Archives Of Afro-Atlantic Liturgy, David Font-Navarrete

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The virtuosic complexity of Afro-Cuban orisha music has led scholars and artists to enshrine it as a “classical” tradition, and it has become one of most iconic and closely-studied sacred music traditions of the historical Afro-Atlantic. This essay traces the legacies of several analog-era multimedia technologies in orisha music traditions: reel-to-reel and cassette tapes; limited edition and out-of-print books and phonograph discs; ephemeral texts such as album liner notes; and photographic negatives, prints, and slides. The tapes and photos — along with a vast body of informal, unpublished, and out-of-print documents of Afro-Cuban orisha liturgy — are seldom archived by …
