Part of that work has given a voice to Vietnam veterans and the events they faced while in combat. Some of these events were acts of betrayal at the hands of another military member or their own. However, Southern Baptists remained distant from this movement because they were weary of the liberal Christianity expressed by Social Gospel leaders that appeared to replace the power of the Gospel with acts of service. The ministry context for this qualitative action research project was the Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church, a predominately Black congregation located in the Pea Ridge community of Brewton, Alabama. The problem was some members at Saint Mark engaged in spiritually immature actions that evoked immature reactions which yielded unhealthy relationships. منذ أن نشأت الكنيسة كمؤسّسة مستقلّة عن السلطة السياسيّة، وهي في الوقت نفسه تعلن رسالة تتعلّق بالإنسان والمجتمع البشري، أصبحت علاقتها بالدولة إشكاليّة لا مفرّ منها. فلا يمكن للسلطة السياسيّة أن تتجاهل الكنيسة، كما لا يمكن للكنيسة أن تتّخذ موقف اللامبالاة تجاه السلطة السياسيّة. غير أنّ رسم حدود نشاط كلٍّ من المؤسّستين ليس بالأمر اليسير، ولا سيّما عندما يتعلّق الأمر بتحديد غاية السلطة السياسيّة نفسها. لكن هذه العلاقة المتقلّبة، بسبب الظروف المتغيّرة للحياة الإنسانيّة، يمكن أن تكون حيويّة للمجتمع. ويتوسّع الكاتب في هذه الإشكاليّات في ضوء خبرة الكنيسة الكاثوليكيّة داخل المجتمع الواحد.‏

Greeley asserts that Catholics see metaphors for the transcendent in matter, value community within a well-ordered hierarchy, and sanctify suffering—qualities that abound in the writings of Wilde and Tolkien. يتناول البحث تاريخ المسيحيّين في الكويت منذ القرن العشرين، ولا سيّما مع الإرساليّين العرب–الأمريكيّين، كما يرصد أثر اكتشاف النفط على الوجود المسيحي في خمسينيّات وستّينيّات القرن الماضي. يدرس البحث العلاقة مع الفاتيكان والكنائس الثماني المعترف بها، مبرزًا واقع التعايش واحترام الدولة للحريّات الدستوريّة، ولا سيّما حرّيّة الاعتقاد. كما يشرح تأثير دخول الإسلام السياسي إلى البرلمان على حقوق المسيحيّين، مقارنةً بالدستور والاتفاقيّات الدوليّة، مبيّنًا دور المحكمة الدستوريّة في حماية الحقوق.‏

خلاصة

تمرّ هذه الأطروحة بثلاث فترات تأسيسيّة في تاريخ لبنان الحديث. الفترة الأولى هي فترة انهيار السلطنة العثمانيّة وانتقال لبنان إلى الحكم الفرنسيّ المباشر، ولا سيّما في جنوبه حيث يقع «جبل عامل» موضوع هذه الدراسة، أي رجال الدين المنتسبين إليه والخارجين عنه. أمّا الفترة الثانية فهي فترة الاستقلال اللبنانيّ وبداية ظهور المؤسّسات الإداريّة المنبثقة عن هذا الاستقلال. وأخيرًا، تمتدّ الفترة الثالثة إلى الربع الأوّل من الحرب الأهليّة اللبنانيّة.‏
