The Institute recently benefited from a generous gift of books and Mesoamerican artifacts from Jay and Ursula Krenusz. The donation of books, initially made to BYU's Harold B. Lee Library, was divided among the Lee Library, BYU- Idaho, and the Institute. The large collection of artifacts was donated to BYU's Museum of Peoples and Cultures.

In the biblical account, after Joseph's brothers sell him into slavery, they kill a goat, dip Joseph's coat in the blood of the animal, and send the coat to their father, Jacob, to make him think that Joseph has been killed by a wild beast (see Genesis 37:3 1-33). Later we read that Joseph refused the advances of Potiphar's wife in order to remain faithful to God but was nevertheless falsely accused and imprisoned (see Genesis 39).

Madsen, the Institute pays tribute to this remarkable man whose many accomplishments include helping to advance Book of Mormon scholarship and related interests of the Institute.

The Institute is pleased to have assisted with a new publication by the American Center for Oriental Research, in Amman, Jordan. Titled The Petra Papyri I, this volume on the carbonized scrolls from ancient Petra features 26 full plates of multispectral images taken by Steven Booras and Gene Ware during their Institute-sponsored work of imaging the Petra papyri. Access to the superior MSI images enabled scholars to transcribe the burned scrolls with greater accuracy than ever before. The Institute looks forward not only to providing additional images to ACOR for the remaining volumes of its Petra series, but also to …

The ancient Near East often witnessed the rise and fall of powerful nations, a fact of life reflected in the literary and cultural traditions of the time. Given the constant specter of war, military leaders frequently needed to exhort their people to extraordinary levels of bravery. Literary evidence shows that the phrase to “be strong” was commonly used in a military sense. The Book of Mormon, with its roots in the ancient Near East, also reflects that usage.

In his writings over the years, Hugh Nibley has often pointed out “hits” and “bull’s-eyes” in the Book of Mormon—details about the ancient world that were unknown until recent times but that Joseph Smith got right anyway. Serious Book of Mormon research took shape in the early 1900s but has accelerated in recent decades, establishing an entire field of scholarly endeavor and yielding many clues to the book’s ancient origins.

Psychology Student Research

Strong and supportive relationships with parents are key to promoting the mental health of LGBTQ+ teens. Overwhelmingly, studies have focused on ways to improve parental acceptance, largely neglecting understanding the parent–teen dyad as a unit and ignoring teens’ contributions to their relationships with their parents. To address this gap, we conducted 19 separate interviews with LGBTQ+ teens and their Latter-day Saint (LDS) parents (38 total interviews) to explore the ways that teens contributed to the development of positive relationships. Additionally, we explored teen-related factors that presented challenges to the parent–teen relationship. Thematic analyses suggested that LGBTQ+ teens engaged in several …

In the biblical narrative of Rahab, Rahab is colonized by the existing imperial powers, the patriarchal values of Israel, and the army of Joshua. In this assessment colonization is evaluated on four criteria: the control the colonizer exerts over material, cultural, symbolic, and religious resources of the colonized. Under these qualification, Rahab is a victim of colonization, and therefore, the decisions made by Rahab in the narrative may be read as acts of self-preservation.

Classical Theism In John Wesley's Sermons, Francis Gayoba

This article examines John Wesley’s sermons in order to assess whether his doctrine of God may best be classified in terms of strict classical theism or modified classical theism. His view of God’s nature is informed by his inherited Anglican theology, which is blended with his evangelical proclivities. Of relevance to the inquiry into Wesley’s theism are several key concepts: (1) the interrelated divine attributes of omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience; (2) divine eternity in relation to human time; and (3) divine love. Wesley’s sermons that discuss omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience appear to align closely with classical theism. However, in contrast …

In most English versions, Revelation 6:11 includes an interpolation ("the number of") which changes the meaning of the verse. This article evaluates the evidence for changes in the reading and interpretation of the text and the grammatical problems introduced by the interpolation, looking closely at the Greek grammar and syntax of the passage, which does not allow for the interpolation. Then the literary-historical problems with the interpolation are considered, noting the assumptions behind the interpolation and their weaknesses. The purpose of this action research project is to develop and teach an apologetic curriculum on relativism to the high school students at Eastern Hills Church. The research project will measure the student's prior knowledge of relativism and show that an apologetic curriculum on the topic can be used in order to grow their knowledge of the worldview that inhabits their generation. There were twenty total student participants. Eight total male students ranging from 9th grade to the 12th grade level. Beginning with the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg and the address given by Abraham Lincoln, American military cemeteries would have a dual objective to honor nationalism and expand civic religion. Military cemeteries have been on the leading edge of accomplishing ideals such as equality during their construction, implementation, and development. As military cemeteries were created both domestically and on foreign soil between 1860-1960 they became temples to honor nationalism and civic religion.

This Lent, we will continue reflecting on hymns of faith, namely, some of our most beloved Lenten hymns. 10 such hymns have been chosen to fill the 40(+) days of Lent. Therefore, this devotional, different from previous editions, does not proceed on a weekly basis, but merely flows from one hymn to the next. Also different from previous editions, the devotional reflections are specifically based on the stanzas of the selected hymns. جاء هذا البحث الموسوم بعنوان: "النوازل وأثرها على حكم التبني في الفقه الإسلامي ـــــ دراسة فقهية" في مبحثين وخاتمة؛ بهدف دراسة حالة من حالات فقه النوازل المعاصرة، أصلها واقعة خاصة حدثت في زماننا المعاصر، واشتمل المبحث الأول -بعد التعريف المبسط للنوازل- على بيان أهمية الاجتهاد في النوازل وحاجة المجتمع إليها، وضوابط الاجتهاد فيها، وكيفيته. ثم جاء المبحث الثاني ليبين أثر النوازل المعاصرة على حكم التبني في الفقه الإسلامي.

هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على أصل نشوء الدولة وآلياتها وأهدافها في فكر كل من ابن خلدون وتوماس هوبز، والفرق بينهما مع استجلاء الواقع العلمي التطبيقي لفكر الدولة بين النظريتين الإسلامية والغربية وللوصول إلى نتائج ذات أثر واقعي، استخدم الباحث المنهج التاريخي ومنهج تحليل المضمون والمنهج المقارن. وكذلك برزت مشكلة الدراسة في سؤالها الرئيس والذي تم الإجابة عنه والذي تم فيه مقارنة فكر ابن خلدون وهوبز في فكرة الدولة.

تسهم الجمل المركبة في بيان التماسك بين أجزاء النص عموماً، والآيات القرآنية على وجه الخصوص، ومن هنا تكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة في إبراز المناسبة بين الآيات. وقد عمد الباحث إلى الوقوف على الجمل المركبة، وبيان معناها، وأثرها في إبراز الترابط، وبيان أوجه التناسب بين الآيات المبتناة من خلالها.

وقد تبين من خلال الدراسة مدى التناسب والترابط بين أجزاء الجمل المركبة، مع ما تضيفه هذه الجمل من تلاحم بين المعنى اللغوي والدلالة اللفظية.

يستعرض هذا البحث موضوعاً في غاية الأهمية ألا وهو تبرع المرأة بمالها دون إذن زوجها، وهي دراسة فقهية قانونية، سعت لإظهار أحكام هذا الموضوع، ولأجل تحقيق هدف الدراسة اتبعت الباحثة المنهج الاستنباطي، والمنهج التحليلي من أجل تجلية مفردات البحث، والخروج برؤية شرعية عن موضوع الدراسة، وقد بيّن البحث أن للمرأة البالغة العاقلة الراشدة ذمة مالية مستقلة، وأن لها حرية التصرف بمالها في عقود التبرعات المالية دون اعتبار إذن الزوج في ذلك، حتى وإن زاد المال عن الثلث، وقد جاءت نصوص القانون الأردني مؤيدة لهذا الأمر.

توحيد الألوهية (العبادة) متضمن للربوبية، فمن عبد الله تعالى بالقبول والرضا، فمقر له بالنفع والضر ضرورة، يحتج بهذا المرجئة على العكس: أن المشرك بالألوهية هو كذلك مشرك في الربوبية، ومن ثم فإن الربوبية مناط شرك العبادة، فلا شرك إلا باعتقاد النفع والضر.

وهذا صحيح من حيث الأصل والحالة السوية؛ التي فيها العبادة عن رضا وقبول، وفيها الانسجام بين الظاهر والباطن، لكن كل أصل له استثناء، والحالة السوية قد تنقلب فيقع التخالف ما بين الظاهر والباطن، وحينئذ يمكن تصور شرك-وعبادة-بلا اعتقاد النفع والضر، فيشرك في الألوهية-ويوحد-دون اعتقاد الربوبية.
